January heralds a time of golden opportunities.

The winter sales are on and there’s a fresh sense of good intent everywhere. We all want our New Year’s resolutions to get off to a good start, don’t we!

Unfortunately, not everyone’s intentions are honourable at this time of year.

Burglars take advantage of long dark nights, especially if they’re spurred on by the thought of houses full to the brim with Christmas gifts and discounted, high-value bargains from the shops – but that’s a great reason to re-engage with your clients

New Year, new gifts – new cover levels?

The total value of contents in a home may increase very quickly without your clients thinking about it, with electronic goods and jewellery in particular.

Smartphones, tablets and watches; games consoles, plasma TVs and statement jewellery; even new sofas and white goods – it all adds up, whether or not the items themselves have been paid for in full.

What makes matters worse, is it’s never really the ‘done thing’ to talk about how much has been spent on a gift. Can you imagine the scene? “Darling, here’s that rose-gold Rolex you’ve always wanted, and here’s the receipt so that we can update our insurance.” There’s only one thing that’s worse: “Darling, my watch is missing…”

That’s why this is a great time to contact clients and invite them to think about the value they may have added to their household contents in the last month or so.

Tips from the crew to you:

1In a ‘Happy New Year’ email out to your database, it’s easy to include a ‘New Year’s Resolution’ checklist of items that may have significantly boosted the value of home contents, along with an offer to help review their policies.

During a client meeting, if things are a little awkward regarding gift prices, it may help to diffuse the situation by offering a solution:

“Can you both pop me an email, separately?”
