Since COVID-19 struck in March, many — if not most — Americans have spent large chunks of their lives alone, a state of being that brings up issues from the interior of the soul.

It’s an often uncomfortable situation, and as we’ve watched a series of national horrors during this time — a death toll that has exceeded 200,000 people, the killing of numerous Black citizens at the hands of police, historic blazes in the West and four tropical storms lacing the Gulf Coast — it’s natural to want to escape the isolation and the emptiness that 2020 has wrought.

When the Academy of Country Music (ACM) became the first awards show to move forward on TV during the pandemic on Sept. 16, it would have been tempting to hide the empty seats in the three Nashville venues featured in the CBS telecast. Instead, dick clark productions (a subsidiary o f M R C E nt e r t a i n m e nt , w h i c h also owns Billboard ) embraced the circumstances, making best use of the visual landscape to share in the sorrows and bring a little vibrancy at the same time.

Old Dominion’s performance of a medley that included “One Man Band” — which won song of the year for writers Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Brad Tursi and Josh Osborne — used concert-level production to hold attention, but also captured the floor of the Ryman Auditorium with lighting effects that created engaging shadows against the arms of the vacant, wooden pews.

Kane Brown’s rendition of “Worldwide Beautiful” relied on a supporting choir performing at safe social distances amid spar-

kling effects in the fan-less balcony at the Grand Ole Opry House. Miranda Lambert’s collaboration with co-writers Luke Dick

and Natalie Hemby on “Bluebird,” swathed in a royal palette at the Bluebird Café, made use of the barren tables at the foot and the side of the stage.

It sent a subtle message to viewers — your entertainers are just as isolated as you — even as they collected hardware for their mantels in a night with several surprises. Thomas Rhett and Carrie Underwood tied for entertainer of the year, an unprec-

edented occurrence in the ACMs’ 55-year history. When Maren Morris col-lected female vocalist of the year, she called it “an award I thought I would never get to win” during a flustered ac-ceptance speech.

Morris had grown accustomed to Lambert owning the category: She won it nine years in a row, a streak that ended in 2018. And Morris’ experi-ence during this calendar year has not always felt like a winning one.

“I am just so humbled that my Nashville community, my in-dustry peeps, think that my year has been big because part of it has been in 2020, which has been kind of a shit show,” she told media in a virtual press room. “Someone saying that I had a good year is so much validation.”

of the year, for What You See Is What You Get. And Rhett added music video, for “Remember You Young,” to his entertainer accolade.

Lambert’s record-setting 35th career ACM — music event of the year for “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” announced days ahead of the awards — made two of her five collaborators double winners: Morris added it to her female vo-calist victory, and Tenille Townes clutched it alongside new female artist of the year. Ashley McBryde, Elle King and Caylee Hammack also earned music event awards.

The night’s other winners included Dan + Shay, who repeated as vocal duo; Blake Shelton, who claimed single of the year, for “God’s Country”; and two other pre-show victors: new male artist Riley Green and songwriter of the year Hillary Lindsey.

The ACMs offered a series of invigorating performances, but the most pow-erful moments came when the show addressed the difficulties faced by the people onstage and the audience watching at home.

“We are in the middle of trying to fight two pandemics, COVID-19 and so-cial injustice,” said Urban in his opening comments as host. “Far too many lives have been lost to both.”

The memoriam segment, delivered as Trisha Yearwood sang “I’ll Carry You Home,” included coronavirus victims Joe Diffie and John Prine among the industry’s losses. Brown’s “Worldwide Beautiful,” featuring multicolored lighting and multicultural voices, advocated for love and sensitivity over preju-dice. Tim McGraw, after a vulnerable reading of his current “I Called Mama,” segued into a historic performance with #MeToo significance.

“As a son, a husband and a proud father of three daughters — as a human being — I am enlightened and inspired by women every day,” said McGraw. “Their strength changes me for the better, and every opportunity in life should be available to women. This next song speaks to the questions we face while we’re trying to create the change to let our daughters be whomever they want to be.”

Mickey Guyton, backed only by Urban on piano, launched into the big-voiced ballad “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?,” a risky acknowledgement of the in-equities that hold women back. In the process, Guyton became the first Black female country singer to perform at the awards. She told media later that she never would have pursued country if she had not discovered Rissi Palmer, a Black singer who charted three singles on Hot Country Songs in 2007-2008.

“If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here,” said Guyton. “So me standing on that stage representing women of color, period, it shows them that they have the op-portunity and that they can sing whatever kind of music they want to sing. It doesn’t just have to be just R&B.”

Many of the difficulties Americans have faced during the pandemic are directly tied to abuses of power, in government, in business and in daily life. The ACMs did substantively what its audience has been forced, sometimes unwillingly, to do for the past six months: face up to systemic injustice in modern-day America. It didn’t necessarily have answers, but it demonstrated that the genre at least recognizes the world in which its listeners live. It served as a flashy reminder in hard times: You may be by yourself, but you are not alone.

Warner Music Nashville executive vp A&R Cris Lacy conducted a virtual Q&A with Michael Ray and dozens of broadcasters and media outlets on Sept. 15 to promote Ray’s forthcoming single, “Whiskey and Rain.”

Runaway June used clear plastic face shields to protect against the coronavirus during a virtual press room conversation from the Grand Ole Opry House during the 55th annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sept. 16. From left: group members Natalie Stovall, Naomi Cooke and Jennifer Wayne.

Mickey Guyton performed her ballad “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?” during the 55th annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sept. 16 with host Keith Urban accompanying on piano. G

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 | PAGE 4 OF 20

Kelsea Ballerini scores her fourth top 10 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart as Ballerini (Black River) begins at No. 9 on the list dated Sept. 26. In its first week, ending Sept. 17, the set earned 9,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

Ballerini is the follow-up and companion album to Kelsea, which opened at No. 2 with 28,000 units on the survey dated April 4, marking her highest rank-ing. For the new release, Ballerini returned to all 13 tracks and reinterpreted them in a more stripped-down fashion.

The singer-songwriter previously reached the Top Country Albums top 10 with Unapologetically, which debuted and peaked at No. 3 in November 2017 (with 44,000 units, her strongest one-week total to date), and her debut LP, The First Time, which began and peaked at No. 4 in June 2015 (18,000 units). She first appeared on the chart with her self-titled EP, which started and peaked at No. 40 in March 2015.

Meanwhile, “Hole in the Bottle,” the third single from Kelsea, lifts 31-27 on Country Airplay, up by 20% to 4.8 million in audience in the week ending Sept. 20. On the airplay-, streaming- and sales-based Hot Coun-try Songs chart, it pushes 28-24. The song drew 3.9 million U.S. streams (up 20%) and sold 2,000 downloads in the week ending Sept. 17, after Ballerini performed it on the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sept. 16 on CBS.

Kelsea’s lead single, “Homecoming Queen?,” reached No. 14 on Hot Coun-try Songs and No. 17 on Country Airplay. Follow-up “The Other Girl,” with Halsey, rose to Nos. 19 and 52 on the respective lists.

RODGERS’ FIRST TOP 10 Jameson Rodgers earns his first Hot Country Songs top 10 as debut single “Some Girls” (Combustion/River House/Columbia Nashville) rises 11-10. It bumps 6-5 on Country Airplay, up 5% to 23.5 million impressions, and attracted 4.5 million streams and sold 2,000 downloads in the tracking week.

The cut is the first rookie Hot Country Songs top 10 since Travis Denning’s “After a Few,” which climbed to No. 7 in May. It led Country Airplay in June.

‘HAPPY’ COUPLE Blake Shelton’s “Happy Anywhere,” featuring Gwen Ste-fani (Warner Music Nashville/WMN), climbs 11-9 on Country Airplay (19 mil-lion, up 11%). It marks the pair’s second top 10 collaboration, and Stefani’s second top 10 on the chart, after “Nobody but You” led for two frames in May. Shelton scores his 35th top 10.

HARDY HOISTS ‘BEER’ Hardy nets his first Country Airplay top 10 as an artist as “One Beer” (Big Loud), featuring Lauren Alaina and Devin Dawson, ascends 12-10 (18.3 million, up 13%).

Hardy reaches the chart’s top tier in his second appear-ance, after “Rednecker” peaked at No. 26 in August 2019. Alaina notches her third top 10, following two No. 1s: as featured on Kane Brown’s “What Ifs” in October 2017 and with her own “Road Less Traveled” that April. Daw-son earns his second top 10, after “All on Me” hit No. 2 in March 2018.

As a songwriter, Hardy adds his seventh Country Air-play top 10 while he already has another in the region: Jameson Rodgers’ “Some Girls” at No. 5. Hardy’s haul

includes four No. 1s, all since June 2018: Morgan Wallen’s “Up Down” (fea-turing Florida Georgia Line), FGL’s “Simple,” Chris Lane’s “I Don’t Know About You” and Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country.”

HERE’S ‘GONE’ Andrew Jannakos’ self-released breakthrough track, “Gone Too Soon,” blasts onto Hot Country Songs at No. 12. The 26-year-old from Flowery Branch, Ga., performed a blind audition on NBC’s The Voice in spring 2019 and has built a robust following on social media. Prior to the song’s release on Sept. 15, he posted snippets of it on TikTok, where he has nearly 700,000 followers.

In the week ending Sept. 17, encompassing the song’s first three days of commercial availability, “Gone” sold 28,000 downloads to launch at No. 1 on Country Digital Song Sales and No. 2 on the all-genre Digital Song Sales ranking. It also drew 2.4 million streams in that span.

Country Airplay

RANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 148 stations by Nielsen Music. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Nielsen Audio- copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2020, Nielsen Audio). The list of all Country Airplay chart reporters can be viewed on Nielsen Music’s platforms.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in

audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they

are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen Music) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCEMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay lists the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 | PAGE 10 OF 20

‘CRY PRETTY’ THIS CHRISTMASLast year’s Cry Pretty Tour is this year’s Christmas pretty gift bag.

Runaway June and Maddie & Tae, the opening acts on Carrie Underwood’s arena tour, both announced new holiday EPs in the last three days. Added to Underwood’s previously announced yuletide album — My Gift, due Sept. 25 — all three artists are officially represented among 2020’s holiday music offerings.

Runaway June’s five-track When I Think About Christmas goes to market on Oct. 16, while Maddie & Tae’s six-cut We Need Christmas will arrive Oct. 23.

It’s doubtful that the three acts coordinated, though there are some similarities among their releases. All the projects mix classic seasonal material with exactly two new original songs. Additionally, two of Underwood’s classic choices — each of them a hymn that begins with the word “O” — are covered by her former tour mates: Underwood and Runaway June both tackle “O Holy Night,” while Underwood and Maddie & Tae each recorded “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

That means this holiday will lean heavily on female performers for new country sounds. Dolly Parton’s first yuletide project in 30 years, the cleverly titled A Holly Dolly Christmas, is also on the way Oct. 2. She has some over-lap in her tracklist, too. A version of “A Holly Jolly Christmas” is on the Mad-die & Tae project, in addition to Parton’s, and Parton and Underwood each recorded “Mary, Did You Know?”

Sept. 23• 2015 — Thomas Rhett racks up a platinum single from the RIAA

for “Crash and Burn.”

try Music Association Awards. His closest competition comes from Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty and Charley Pride, who earn four apiece.

Sept. 25• 2019 — The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has the final two songs in the

PBS series Country Music: A Film by Ken Burns. Episode eight closes with its version of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and a collaboration with Maybelle Carter on “Wildwood Flower.”

Sept. 26• 2000 — BNA releases Kenny Chesney’s Greatest Hits.

ing a tour stop at the Top Hat in Missoula, Mont.• 1995 — George Strait records “Blue Clear Sky” at Emerald Sound

Deluxe albums are the order of the day. Ingrid Andress has recorded three new songs for a deluxe edition of Lady Like, due Oct. 2, and Luke Combs stuffed five new titles onto a de-luxe version of his sophomore album, slightly renamed What You See Ain’t Always What You Get, arriving Oct. 23. Rascal Flatts also an-nounced Twenty Years of Rascal Flatts The Greatest Hits, which includes 20 performances — deluxe size, even if it’s not being billed that way. That project arrives Oct. 2. Also coming are Earl Thomas Conley’s Promised Land: The Lost Album, due Sept. 25; bluegrass artist Jor-dan Tice’s Motivational Speakeasy, Sept. 25; a vinyl version of John Prine’s Souvenirs, Sept. 25; Emily Rose’s debut EP, The Heart, Oct. 23; and The Wild Feathers’ Medium Rarities, Nov. 20.

Add the 10th anniversary iHeartRadio Music Festival to the events that have moved from live, in-person gatherings to a virtual format. Ryan Seacrest hosted the two-day soiree Sept. 18-19 from Los Angeles and Nashville with Keith Urban, Thomas Rhett, Kane Brown and Jennifer Nettles representing country. The multiformat concert was livestreamed on The CW’s platforms and broadcast on iHeart stations. Jon Pardi made a surprise appearance to duet with Rhett on “Beer Can’t Fix.” Virtual technologies allowed Urban to include Carrie Underwood in his set, Brown to work alongside Khalid and Swae Lee, and Nettles to hook up musically with Bon Jovi. The nights will be distilled into a two-part special on the CW Sept. 27-28.

Songwriter Jesse Frasure (“Dirt on My Boots,” “One Big Country Song”) has adopted a pseudonym, releasing the ultimate chill project, Calm Springs, under the name Telemitry. Frasure wrote, produced and mixed the seven tracks, which he describes as music that “Frank Sinatra would have been playing poolside at parties.” The titles provide an idea of the instrumental mood music’s attitude — “Supper Club,” “Mai Tai,” “Let the Drugs Wear Off” — blending modern tech with ’60s chic. The project was released Sept. 18.

In what will certainly be an emotional project, Steve Earle & The Dukes plan to record an album of songs written by Earle’s son, Justin Townes Earle, who died in August at the age of 38. Royalties from the project will go to a trust fund for Justin’s daughter, Etta St. James Earle. The Dukes hope to get into a recording studio in October and release the album in January.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton performed “Happy Anywhere” during the 55th annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sept. 16 on CBS.

KNOX

The weekly Country Songwriters and Country Producers charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Country Songs chart. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

All data measures U.S. activity as of the week ending September 17, 2020. All units counts are rounded to the nearest thousand. Album consumption units — also known as albums plus TEA plus SEA — consists of album sales; track-equivalent album (TEA) sales whereby 10 tracks equal one consumption unit; and stream equivalent albums (SEA) whereby 1,250 paid and/or 3,750 ad-supported audio on-demand streams (OAD) equal one consumption unit. Nielsen Music/MRC Data has reprocessed year-to-date figures to account for a change in methodology, resulting in a restatement in streaming data from a provider, which has resulted in a shift in some previously reported data, most notably for video streams.

The week’s most popular country songs, ranked by radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen Music, sales data as compiled by Nielsen Music and streaming activity data from online music sources tracked by Nielsen Music. Descending titles below No. 25 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 | PAGE 17 OF 20

Between the scratchy rhythm guitar, crisp drumbeat and cheery harmonic texture, it’s easy to come away from Old Dominion’s newest single, “Never Be Sorry,” feeling energized and wanting more.

That’s an accomplishment with just about any musical track, but it’s par-ticularly impressive when the topic is a potential downer. And that’s the case with “Never Be Sorry,” though it’s not entirely obvious. The most accessible lyrics — specific images of shoe shopping in Chicago and a downpour in Santa Barbara, Calif. — are positive scenes from a relationship. But the least tangi-ble passages — feet hanging off the moon or the sky falling down — are artsy, hazy recognitions that the romance is history. Still, the music is so electrify-ing that by the time the listener figures out it’s a heartbreak song, it’s too late: The pensive plot is subservient to the song’s sonic joy.

“More and more lately, if there’s a sad lyric, I feel like I want to make every song happy,” guitarist Brad Tursi says. “A happy sound with a sad lyric is, to me, a cool juxtaposition.”

Tursi’s guitar groove provided the starting point for “Never Be Sorry” when it came together on July 19, 2018, in a green room at the BankPlus Amphitheater in Southaven, Miss., during Kenny Chesney’s Trip Around the Sun Tour. Co-writer Josh Osborne (“One Man Band,” “Happy Any where”) picked up songwriter-producer Shane McAnally (“7 Summers,” “One Night Standards”) at the Memphis Airport and met up with the band to start a weekend songwriting trek.

Once Tursi f ired up his aggressive riff, threaded initially through a minor chord, the writing troupe — including Old Dominion lead vocalist Matthew Ramsey and guitarist-keyboardist Trevor Rosen — instinctively kicked into a bittersweet melody and rapid-fire lyrics with cloudy references to the song’s breakup.

When they arrived at the chorus, it needed a change-up. Tursi spun into complicated major seventh chords, and they landed on the “I’ll never be sorry” hook, marrying it to a surprisingly linear melody.

“Sometimes the dumbest, most basic melody is the one that feels the best,” says Rosen. “I don’t know why that is, but when you feel it, you know. It doesn’t have to be some crazy, all-over-the-map melody. Sometimes it’s just the sim-ple one where you stay on [one note] that you feel that release in your gut.”

The speed of that lyric, coupled with the pace of the instrumental founda-tion, was key.

“The way this song was going to work was if that chorus was just relent-less,” notes Osborne.

The first chorus included the scene on Chicago’s Miracle Mile, an oblique reference to Old Dominion’s “Shoe Shopping” on the Happy Endings album. It likewise owes a debt to Bruce Springsteen’s “Drive All Night.”

“There’s a line in it where he says, ‘I would drive all night just to buy you some shoes,’ ” observes Ramsey. “It’s not flowers, it’s not a ring, but there’s something there that’s really nurturing and caring, I think, about buying a pair of shoes for your girl. I don’t know why, but that always stuck with me.”

“The funny thing about that lyric,” adds Rosen, “is we didn’t realize, until after we recorded it, that it’s not the Miracle Mile in Chicago. It’s the Mag-nificent Mile. So we’re kind of working on a fix for that. You have to go in and fix that lyric before we put this on Chicago radio or we’re going to get killed next time we go there. But ‘Miracle’ sang so well.”

The geography shifted to Santa Barbara in the second chorus as the couple

got “locked out of your car in the pouring rain.”“The California images, I swear, I don’t think they can ever get old because

there’s so much nostalgia,” says McAnally. “And the sound that Old Dominion has leaned toward, especially on the current record, it’s just going more and more like West Coast country to me.”

They recorded a cursory work tape with acoustic guitars and a gang vocal lead, and once bassist Geoff Sprung and drummer Whit Sellers gave it their approval, “Never Be Sorry” was one of the core songs Old Dominion tackled when it started work on its self-titled album at Nashville’s Sound Stage studios.

But as much as they loved it, the song nearly tanked when it failed to coalesce. The work tape sounded “more Maroon 5 than Old Dominion,” says

McAnally, and they struggled to make it fit the band’s style.“If I’m remembering correctly, it took us two days to get this thing,”

notes McAnally. “I mean, there was defi-nitely a moment they wanted to not do it. Multiple moments.”

The key came when Tursi started fool-ing with the major seventh chords from the chorus, substituting them over the original minor triads in the verses. Sellers and Sprung fit the rhythm section into a bit of a new wave groove, enhanced when they applied a trig-ger to the drums that unleashed electronic percussion in tandem with the kit’s natural sound. Tursi added a simple, almost f lashy guitar solo that enhanced the track’s retro pop-rock attitude. That sound was likely de-veloped through an Eventide H9 guitar pedal, though Tursi is not certain and can’t repro-duce it exactly.

“I’m really not a gear guy, but I was like, ‘I’m going in the studio. I have to buy some-

thing different just to have some inspiration,’ ” he recalls. “The guitar sound for this particular song was definitely made with that pedal, but then after the session was over, I think I left the pedal there and I never went back to get it. All these sounds on the record are from that thing, and I never retrieved it.”

The lead part was uncharacteristically easy for Ramsey — “Vocal sessions for me are like going into battle,” he says — while Tursi’s harmony session at his home studio yielded an extra wrinkle: He turned in a winding, soulful counter-voice in the song’s waning minute that would remain.

All the alterations upped the game for “Never Be Sorry.”“I thought it was kind of quirky and weird, and I thought it would be like a

color on an album,” says Osborne. “Then when I heard the way they cut it for the first time, I thought, ‘This sounds like a hit.’ ”

Sony Music Nashville agreed.“From the beginning, when we turned this album in,” says Ramsey, “there

were a lot of people, as far as label and management and production and Shane, you know, that really were like, ‘This has to be a single. It’s going to stand out on the radio.’ ”

RCA Nashville issued it to AM/FM programmers via PlayMPE on Aug. 17. It entered the Country Airplay chart dated Sept. 12 and rises to No. 52 in its third week on the list. Assuming it keeps climbing, it should be well-positioned between Election Day and Christmas, a time when an edgy American public will likely be receptive to a song that puts a sunny disposition on a broken-hearted lyric.

“People just want something to make them feel good,” says Rosen. “We, in the back of our minds, always assumed this would be a single. So it just felt like the right time.”
