ATTENTION CORRECTION In the Feb. 3, The Boise City News we ran a headline that Jana Smith, the daughter of Janice Smith, was a nurse. We were in error, Miss Smith has in fact, a Doctorate in Audiology. She is working with the Univer- sity of Arkansas Medical School. The Way it Works By C.F. David There have been lately, frus- trations about the lack of cov- erage on certain Boise City School functions. I can appre- ciate all of that; however, when it comes to much of the text and several of the pictures, The Boise City News is for the most part, a one man operation. Even though the paper is called The Boise City News, we endeavor to cover the entirety of Cimarron County, southwest- ern Colorado, the west side of Texas County, west to nearly Clayton, N.M. and south to Kerrick, Texas. I can’t be ev- erywhere. In the fall we have one foot- ball team in the county, and I have no problem attending most of the home games. By basketball season, there are at least four schools repre- sented with middle and high school teams; this means that there could be 16 or more games a week. I choose to de- pend on parents and yearbook staffs for basketball pictures. When I get them I run them. When track and cross coun- try comes around I again depend on parents who have been fol- lowing the teams all over the state. I couldn’t do it without them. This weekend will be the stock show; for the first time since 2002, I won’t be there. Each year in the past my atten- dance at the stock show has ended with my being really sick with lung congestion. I’m not going to do it anymore. I have tried to make arrangements for photographs. I’ll also need text; any help anyone can give me will be appreciated. We are proud of what our kids accomplish, be they from Felt, Campo, Boise City, Keyes or Yarbrough, and we are thrilled when we can toot their horns. Please help us do that. By C.F. David There are few “Reality Shows” he likes, and among those he hates are “Survivor” (greedy schoolyard bullies), and the “Biggest Loser” (Degradation of the obese). However, he knew he was carrying around a whole other person that wasn’t there in high school. He became aware that he was now heavier than the largest football player on the team his senior year. And though heart problems and diabetes weren’t yet a problem, he knew any morning he could wake with those problems…or perhaps not wake at all. It was time for a change…he had things to live for, people to love, a future to explore. All he knew was he didn’t want some buff blond millionaire screaming in his face about letting himself down. There had to be another way. When Cimarron Memorial advertised about a weight loss program, he began to consider it, knowing in the back of his County Residents Journey are on Weight Loss Quest mind it wouldn’t be easy. He was a man of compulsions; there were things he loved to eat, and others he was sure he had to eat. The Cimarron Memorial program, (which now has double digit participants), was explained to him as not a program of rewards and punishment, but as a casual, eventual lifestyle change. It wasn’t about refusing to eat any of the things he liked, but learning to do it in moderate portions. Then online he found a site called “Sparkspeople”, where he could set up a program that helped him journal his diet. He learned he had to eat a LOT to maintain his goal levels. He was feeling well fed, and saw it was going to be better for him. And there would be no screaming buff blond, millionaire with her own TV show, Wii personality and exercise CDs. Life was good! He began to think he could do it. Who knows what the year might bring? Might he eventually even leave that other person behind, never to be seen again? I have been a member of Western Oklahoma Choral Directors Association (WOCDA) for four years. This honor choir consists of vocal musician students from western Oklahoma who have auditioned and received high rating in which to be recognized as an honor choir member. Af- ter auditioning in Seiling, OK in HONOR CHOIR October and receiving honors, I attended a festival of choirs along with fellow vocal musi- cians, Kelsey Turner and Ian Licea. We spent all morning and af- ternoon learning new pieces for the evening festival. A few songs slowed as down such as the Women’s Choir song in Portu- guese and the Mixed Choir piece in Bulgarian. That same evening we performed in the festival of choirs at Southwestern Okla- homa State University and re- ceived honors. WOCDA has been a wonderful experience for me and a great opportunity for all young vocalists to get to- gether and learn from each other as well as have fun with the people you meet. I would like to thank the Western Oklahoma Choral Di- rectors Association for the won- derful experiences I have had over the few years I have been involved. I would also like to thank Boise City High School for allowing us the privilege to at- tend these auditions and events. The skills and friendships I have developed with WOCDA will last a lifetime.
