Between the Wars: 1918–1941During the “entre-guerres,” 1919–1939, all policies of peace and stability utterly failed. The peace conferences in 1919 brought no peace, and the League of Nations redefined downward the words “weak” and “irrelevant.” Fascism became the dominant political idea, beginning with the Marxist variety in Russia, in 1919 and nationalist fascism in Italy, in 1922. Democracy faded in popularity, as people looked for national and ideological strength and unity to solve social and economic problems brought on by the Great War. Nor was the economic situation after 1918 any better. Europe never recovered from the costs of war and failure of peace. Only France and America enjoyed prosperity in the 1920s, and the depression overtook everyone after 1929. These were the years of failure in public policy. “There will be stuff,” even more necessary in this tale of woe.

Origins of Philosophy: Socrates, Plato, AristotleChaos, cosmos, all of the “logy” words such as mythology, all of the “ics” words such as physics, and all of the “polis” words, such as metropolis…Have you ever wondered what these words meant to people who came up with them? A modern thinker once said that all of Western thought is a series of footnotes to Plato. This observation is true if you add Socrates and Aristotle. Learn about the personalities and circumstances of the creators of philosophy–what they tried to do, and how well they did it. Discussions will focus from Plato’s 35 dialogues: Euthypro, Politeia (Republic), Phaedrus, Apology, Timaeus, and commentary from Aristotle’s Nichomachian Ethics, Politics, Organon (Logic), Physics, and Metaphysics.

Neoclassicism After some of the shocking new music of the early 20th Century, including Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, composers turned back to the styles of older music. Beginning around 1920, Neoclassic compositions appeared, written by many of the same composers who had been writing in newer idioms. This movement was called “Back to Bach,” indicating that a variety of styles were reinterpreted. This class will survey the major Neoclassic works and composers, including contributions by Debussy, Stravinsky, Ravel, Prokofiev, Satie, and Hindemith.
