2. COURSE & UNIT INFORMATION If you have already studied at university level or have significant relevant work experience, you can apply for credit towards your ACU course. Credited units replace units you would otherwise study, so you can finish your course earlier. You can apply for credit towards your ACU course by completing an Application for Credit / Recognition of Prior Learning form. The form should be submitted as soon as possible and prior to commencing your studies so that a plan can be constructed taking your credits into account. Please note, Applications for Credit/ Recognition of Prior Learning should be submitted no later than the census date in the first semester of your enrolment in the course. The census date is the last day you can make changes to your student enrolment before you become committed to your fees. If your Application for Credit is approved, you should arrange a meeting with your Course Coordinator to discuss the correct path of study for you. In many cases, you will need a customised Course Map that you can follow to ensure you meet the requirements of your degree in the quickest time available.

Course Structure The ACU Handbook1 provides detailed information about each ACU course, including minimum duration, requirements for completion, exit points, any available majors/minors/specialisations, Core Curriculum units and descriptions of units. Please follow the links below to view the rules for your course:

Course Title Course Rules Handbook Link Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Global Studies - 2019 http://handbook.acu.edu.au/1421982 Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Global Studies - 2018 https://handbook.acu.edu.au/1302535

Course Introduction This course combines the study of:

• 180cp from the Bachelor of Commerce, • 120cp from the study of Global Studies, and • 20cp from Core Curriculum units.

This course also includes one (1) semester of Study Abroad or an International Internship. The Course maps included provide the details of what to study in each year. Details of the units for each Bachelor of Commerce major are provided in the course map, while elective units available in 2019 are provided in the section on Unit Selection. Make sure that you use the correct Course map for your elected major and appropriate year of study. Details of Business electives and Global Studies electives can be found in the Unit Selection portion of the document. Please note that there have been some changes to the codes and names of Business units from 2019. A list of these changes are available in the unit selection section of this guide. Please consult it to make sure that you do not do a unit twice.

Course Progression The Course Maps included within this document provide a standard progression for a student enrolled in a full-time load, expecting to complete their degree in the standard four year time period. There are a number of valid reasons why individual students will not be able to utilise the Course Map in the form presented in this document.

Non-Standard Enrolment Pattern (for example, part time study or failed units) If you voluntarily choose to study less than a full-time load, or if you fail one or more units in a semester, you should arrange a meeting with your Course Coordinator to discuss the correct path of study for you. In many cases, you will need a customised Course Map that you can follow to ensure you meet the requirements of your degree in the quickest time available.

Credit for previous study Please note, if your Application for Credit/ Recognition for Prior Learning is approved, you should arrange a meeting with your Course Coordinator to discuss the correct path of study for you. In many cases, you will need a customised Course Map that you can follow to ensure you meet the requirements of your degree in the quickest time available. If you have your Application for Credit approved, you should arrange a meeting with your Course Coordinator to discuss the correct path of study for you. In many cases, you will need a customised Course Map that you can follow to ensure you meet the requirements of your degree in the quickest time available.

The Core Curriculum Compulsory for all undergraduate courses All undergraduate students are required to complete the University Core Curriculum as part of their course. The Core Curriculum is comprised of three units and further information on its structure can be found on the Core Curriculum2 webpage. The Core Curriculum units specific to your course are indicated on the course map and can also be found in the Handbook. The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed to focus on aspects of the University’s identity and mission. These units emphasise critical judgment, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others, as individuals and as a community. The two University Core Curriculum units are:

• UNCC100 Self and Community: Exploring the Anatomy of Modern Society • UNCC300 Justice and Change in a Global World

These units are often taught over differing week patterns to allow for student placements at various times during semester. Students should take special care to note the week pattern of tutorials when they allocate in tutorial direct to ensure that they are choosing the correct stream for their course. These units are also offered in intensive mode in winter and summer.

Study Abroad or Global Studies International Internship Program (GSIIP)

Going overseas will help you to become more globally aware. You will be able to learn in a global context and gain confidence, developing work-ready skills and independence. This can build your CV. There is more information on our LEO site https://leo.acu.edu.au/course/view.php?id=14982 . You can self-enrol into the site if you are not currently enrolled in it. There are two options to choose from and both are worth 40cp towards your degree, an international exchange program or an internship.

Exchange Program You can choose to go on an Exchange program with one of ACU’s partner universities. You would then undertake the equivalent of 40cp of units at the partner organisation. Note that you need to have completed 120cp of study and have a GPA of 4.5 to partake in this program. (See information later on GPA requirement.) Details on the exchange program can be found at: https://www.studentportal.acu.edu.au/acuinfo/cao/so The contact email for study abroad: [email protected] OR

Internship The internship involves work experience overseas where you can apply your university learning in the real world. The experience needs to be 10-12 weeks fulltime. You are also required to undertake some studying and assessments prior to, during and post your internship. You need to have completed 120cp of study, must apply in December of the previous year and must have your application approved by the Faculty of Education and Arts well before your departure. The contact email for internships is: [email protected]

How does the international experience fit into the degree? Note that it is COMPULSORY to undertake an international experience during your degree. See the course map to see where it is scheduled: • Students who start the course in February will undertake this in their 6th semester of study (or second

semester of their third year) • Students who start the course midyear will undertake this in their 7th semester of study (this will also

be a second semester but would be the first semester of their fourth year).

These times are not changed easily as they need to fit in with your full degree structure and also allow you to apply for certain types of funding.

First Year Students: • Watch out for emails about information sessions and make sure that you attend them or listen to them

online • Start thinking about where you would like to go and whether you would want to do an exchange or

internship • Work hard so that you maintain a GPA of more than 4.5 (see information on this at the end) • While some of your costs will be covered, there may be additional costs associated with your living

expenses or internship.

Second Year Students: • Watch out for emails about information sessions and make sure that you attend them or listen to them

online. • Identify a couple of partner universities if you want to do an exchange. • Identify possible internships or organisations you might do an internship with, if you want to do an

internship. • After learning all you can about the process, start getting all your documentation together in second

semester of year prior to your experience. • Apply in December of the previous year. • Obtain a working with children check.

Third Year Students (Feb intake)/Third-Fourth Year Students (Midyear Intake): • Obtain sign-off on all documentation. • Internship students undertake course work prior to undertaking their internship. • Go on your experience, work hard, learn about other countries and people, have fun.

Costs and Funding There will be a number of additional costs associated with the overseas exchange or internship that are not covered by your fees, for example, accommodation, food, additional travel and airfares. If you use an organisation to find you an internship, they may also charge you. Please ensure that you save for these and/or apply for appropriate funding. The information sessions that you will attend will provide you with additional information on funding options.

Working with Children and Police Checks Those students participating in the Global Studies International Internship Program must obtain background checks as required by Federal and State/Territory laws if their proposed work might involve working with children. Please refer to ACU’s webpage for requirements in your local State or Territory. https://www.acu.edu.au/staff/human_resources/working_@_acu/health,_safety_and_wellbeing/protecting_children_and_vulnerable_adults/legislation_and_regulations Your application for the Internship should include evidence of the relevant Federal and/or State working with children and police checks, where relevant. You may also require further checks as stipulated by your host country or organisation for internship programs undertaken overseas.

2019 Unit Selection You must enrol for both semesters, not just Semester 1.

Not only is this a requirement of the Academic Regulations, but ACU also uses enrolment information to understand the demand for each unit and schedule enough spaces. Enrol now for the full year so you don’t miss out on the units you want. You can easily change your Semester 2 units later if you change your mind. Remember, Semester 2 tuition fees are not due until August. Please note that study modes and unit availability are subject to change and not all units are on offer at all times. Students must refer to their course map first, and then check the relevant offering list/s below for 2019 unit availability prior to enrolling. Students can enrol in any offered mode of a unit (Attendance or Online), regardless of how or where they are enrolled in their course.

2. Note that you can only ask for special consideration for the timetable if you have a disability, child-care responsibilities or live more than 2 ½ hours away from the university (or similar). Work commitments are not a reason for special consideration for the timetable and you will need to organise your work around your studies.
