    Course Entry Requirements

St Philomena’s Sixth Form Entrance Requirements

    September 2016

In order to study A Levels, students must gain 5 GCSE passes at

Grade A*-C in separate subjects (BTEC qualifications will only

count as one GCSE pass), and meet the subject specific entry

criteria. English Language and Mathematics must be studied in

the Sixth Form until a Grade C or above is attained.

In order to meet the demands of the new challenging reformed

A Levels that the government have introduced, it is expected that

students will study 3 A Levels over the two year course. In some

circumstances targeted students may be encouraged to study 4

    A Level subjects.

As a result, St Philomena’s Sixth Form will be offering A Levels

that reflect the changes made by the Government to the

    following subjects:

    Art & Design

    (including Photography)

    Art & Design: Textiles

    Biology

    Business Studies

    Chemistry

    Computer Science

    For your information

The Government has reformed A Levels to ensure that they

prepare students better for future choices in either Further

Education or Higher Education or employment. The new A Levels

will be linear qualifications that ensure students develop the skills

and knowledge needed for progression to undergraduate study.

These new A Levels are to be fully linear with more synoptic

assessment. They will be taken over two years, with students

sitting their exams at the end of the course. AS Levels will be

stand-alone qualifications and will no longer contribute to an A

    Level grade.

    Core Learning

All students are required to take Core RE with one period

allocated in the timetable each week.

Students will also follow the Future Pathways Programme. Within

this course students receive extensive support with the decision

making and applications processes (UCAS) for the next steps in

    their education, training or employment.

Please see separate insert “Sixth Form Blocks 2016 - 2017.”

    Optional Additional Learning

Students may wish to take one of the following options as an

additional course in the Sixth Form alongside 3 or 4 core options.

Courses are selected in September 2016.

    Sports Leader Award Level 2

Entry requirement: Students will need to be studying AS

PE or have an interest in Sports Leadership or be actively

engaged in sporting performance, officiating or coaching.

Extended Project Qualification (half an A Level)

Entry requirements: 8 GCSE passes at Grade A*-B

including English Language or English Literature at

    B Grade or above.

    Further Mathematics

Entry Requirement: Grade A*- GCSE Mathematics and

must be studying AS Level Mathematics.
