People’s Desire

Being power, knowledge is brought to thefore. Reading can expand the horizons of thereaders. So, today man focuses intensiveattention on learning and seeking knowledge.

The government is applying a variety ofmeans for the people of all ages to have easyaccess to education. As part of the drive, it haslaunched many ways for formal education,non-formal education and informal education. The youth of the nation now have easy access tointernational level subjects through advancedcommunications. The adult literate rate is onthe increase owing to the Three R’sprogrammes for over school-age children, andyoung and old illiterates.

As a result, literate population is growing. Now, more and more libraries are being openedfor post literary programmes. So far, thenumber of self-reliant village libraries hastouched 55,755. It is therefore required to makesustained efforts to ensure sustainable progressof those facilities.

Now, the Rural Library Foundation hasbeen formed through the good offices of thegovernment, well-wishers, entrepreneurs andorganizations. On the opening day of thefoundation, well-wishers donated publicationsof various genres plus donations of more than700 million kyats. That suggests theirenthusiasm to the plan to broaden the horizonsof the country people.

The harmonious cooperation of thegovernment, donors and local people will leadthe libraries to sustainable development, andincrease the number of well-furnished librarieswith competent librarians and funds.

Today, the whole nation has seen self-reliantvillage libraries, thus providing newly-literatepeople with easy access to periodicals. Inaddition, rural folks have vast knowledge andhigher reasoning power. The Rural LibraryFoundation is believed to generate sustainabledevelopment of the village libraries.

In the photo, the shuttle and space station canclearly be seen as two separate spacecraft.

They appear as dark silhouettes in the upper rightregion of an otherwise bright yellow sun. Even thewings of Atlantis can be discerned along with thestation’s expansive solar arrays as both flew 200 miles(354 km) above earth.

When Legault took the photo, Atlantis was flyingbelow the space station and about to perform an orbitalback flip so astronauts inside the station could snaphigh-resolution photos of the thousands of heat-resistanttiles lining the shuttle’s belly.

Summer sounds can lead to hearingloss

INDIANAPOLIS, 23 May—Some of the mostcommon sounds ofsummer can exposelisteners to permanenthearing loss, oneresearcher warns.

The cautionary notewas sounded by DavidCoffin, director of BallState University’saudiology clinic in Indiana.

Risky noise, he says, can come in the form of thepop of fireworks, the snarlsof traffic, the buzz of lawnmowers, or the percussivetones of marching bands.

Such sounds aretypically within the rangeof 90 decibels to 140

decibels, said Coffin, butany noise above 80 decibelscan cause long-termhearing damage.

“We are living in asociety that gets louderevery year,” Coffin said ina news release from BallState. “Now that theweather is warmer, we areexposed to all sorts ofsounds that can lead topermanent hearing loss. The average person willwear a helmet when ridinga bike, or a seat belt in avehicle, but doesn’t eventhink about ear protectionwhen going to watch a rockband, a fireworks display,or even an auto race.”

According to the

National Centre for HealthStatistics, almost 15percent of Americansbelow the age of 19 sufferfrom some measure ofhearing loss.

Signs of hearing lossdue to unsafe soundexposure include not beingable to comprehendsomebody talking from twofeet away; hearing muffledspeech; experiencing painor ringing in the earsfollowing exposure; andneeding others to speaklouder in conversation.

Scientists sport real ‘smoking gun’ in prostate cancerNEW YORK, 23 May—

The primary cause ofprostate cancer could bethe fusion of two genesand the subsequentabnormal prostate cellgrowth that results whenreceptors for the hormoneandrogen get blocked, anew study reveals.

The implication is thatstandard efforts to treatthe disease by targetingthe androgen receptorsmight be missing the real“smoking gun,” aUniversity of MichiganComprehensive CancerCentre team suggests.

“We need to begin tothink about targetingprostate cancer bytargeting the gene fusion, and not confining ourapproaches to androgenreceptors,” study author

Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, director of the MichiganCentre for TranslationalPathology, said in a newsrelease. “If we’re going tofind a more durabletherapy, we need to get atthe gene fusion.”

Chinnaiyan and hiscolleagues report their

findings in the 18 Mayissue of Cancer Cell.

The authors note thattypical prostate cancertreatments focus on drugsthat attempt to slowproduction of androgen, the male hormone thatregulates healthy prostategrowth. However, such

efforts usually becomeless effective over time ascancer cell resistancemounts, making recurrentcancer much lessamenable to similartreatments.—Internet

Checklist cuts death rate for urgent surgeryNEW YORK, 23 May—

A simple checklist helpssurgical teams avoidmistakes and cuts deathsby more than half duringurgent surgery, a newstudy shows.

The checklist testedin the new study wasintroduced in 2008 by theWorld HealthOrganization as part ofits Safe Surgery SavesLives program.

It had already beenshown to cutcomplications across alltypes of surgery, but therehad been concern thatwhen time is of theessence, running througha checklist might wastelife-saving minutes.

But that wasn’t thecase, said Dr. Atul A.Gawande, a surgeon atBrigham and Women’sHospital in Boston,Massachusetts, whoworked on the study.Gawande has alsowritten about checklistsfor The New Yorkermagazine, where he is astaff writer, and in his2009 book The ChecklistManifesto: How to GetThings Right.

“It has a kind ofcounterintuitive feel toit,” he said. But in fact,“the teams did betterwhen they took those twominutes to run throughthe checks.”

Gawande and

colleagues tested eightdifferent hospitals aroundthe world before and afterthey introduced the WHOchecklist. Of the morethan 1700 patients whohad urgent surgery — forinstance, for openfractures — the numberof deaths dropped byalmost two-thirds, from3.7 percent to 1.4, theyreport in the Annals ofSurgery.—Internet

There were many tube-wells in Wundwin. Manylakes were dug with the collaborative efforts of Town-ship Peace and Development Council and TownshipDevelopment Affairs Committee. However, the wa-ter levels of the lakes and wells fell due to dailyconsumption and high temperature. With regard tothe efforts for supply of potable water, ExecutiveEngineer U Myo Min Thant of Township DAC con-ducted us around the water supply facilities.

In Sethmu Ward of Wundwin, we saw a 300feet deep and 8-inch diameter tube-well.

Photo shows water supply tank on Thein Hill. Water pumping station in Wundwin.

“This tube-well was sunk recently. Before do-ing it, we conducted feasibility study for availabilityof potable water meeting set standard in all places ofthe town. We will sink five more tube-wells aroundthis place,” explained U Myo Min Thant.

We witnessed a transformer, 20,000-gallon ra-dial collector well and water pumping station near thetube-well. Although the tube-well is located 1.5 milesfrom the hub of the town, it is a facility to supply thebest quality water for the dwellers.

A water supply tank was built in Thein Hill, south of Wundwin. We had bird’s eye view of the townfrom 80 feet high Thein Hill where the water supplytank, 30 feet long, 20 feet wide and six feet high, islocated.

“The water tank can store 20,000 gallons ofwater. The water from the tube-well of Sethmu Wardwill be pumped to the water tank on the hill. After that, the water tank will supply potable water to the wholetown,” explained U Myo Min Thant.

While in Wundwin, we saw laying of waterpipelines for providing drinking water to the residentsthrough the water taps. On completion of repairing

public water tanks and water pipelines, over 100,000gallons of potable water can be supplied to the localpeople daily. That is why the residents of Wundwinwill overcome the difficulty of water shortage soon.

Near Wundwin lies over 80 feet high Thein Hillas a natural gift. The hill can be used as a natural watersupply base for the whole town. On completion of theproject, all the local people will enjoy the fruits ofwater supply through the taps.

Wundwin is making greater efforts in imple-menting drinking water supply project. The localauthorities and staff of Township DAC are exertingtheir utmost efforts to supply potable water to theresidents.
