Instead, an open learning initiative will be utilized to access course materials. Required readings: See Course Modules tab at the course blackboard site. COURSE DESCRIPTION An initial presentation of the conceptual framework of statistical thinking. The course then presents design and graphical techniques for describing data and for making inferences from the data. Business applications are utilized for illustration. Prerequisite(s): MATH 111 and CIS 151. COURSE GOAL and LEARNING OBJECTIVES The goal of this course is for students to develop the habit of putting statistical thinking into action. To do so we will concentrate on activities related to the discovery and utilization of useful information to achieve business objectives.

The following learning objectives will be used to establish learning outcomes for this course. In particular, upon successful completion of this course students should be able to: (1) Select entities from a population using simple random sampling (2) Identify the study design and/or procedures used to collect data contained in datasets (3) Evaluate the benefits and limitations of a dataset in general and in relation to specified objective(s) (4) Describe properties of datasets (5) Identify the graphical and/or numerical analysis tools that are appropriate to use with datasets (6) Use statistical methods and tools with datasets to produce estimates (point and/or interval) of population parameters (7) Describe properties of sampling distributions (8) Use the following statistical inference procedures to draw conclusions Confidence intervals; Sample size; Prediction intervals (9) Conduct hypothesis tests in relation to regression coefficients, averages, variances, and proportions (10) Identify sources of variation (special cause and common-cause) in business processes (11) Identify appropriate process improvement and problem solving tools to use in different situations (12) Use a process improvement toolkit to examine business processes and make recommendations ROMAIN COLLEGE of BUSINESS SKILL DEVELOPMENT This course will help to develop: Analytical Problem Solving skills with an emphasis on proficiency in the following traits: 1. Using concepts 2. Using information 3. Using analytical operations 4. Interpretation of results ABOUT THIS COURSE This is an introductory business statistics course. The course is organized around five themes. Each theme provides opportunities for you to discover the practical significance of statistics and build confidence in your ability to use data to make judgments and decisions. After successfully completing this course you will have developed the confidence and capability to identify situations where basic statistical tools can be applied. Since there is an emphasis on developing your competencies to put statistical thinking into action, the course will rely heavily on activities that integrate your current knowledge and skills in the application of statistical concepts, methods, and tools. These learning experiences will provide you with a usable toolkit for life, career, and jobs to be done currently and in the future. COURSE EVALUATION You are able to provide feedback about this course before and during the course evaluation period. The course evaluation period is between 8 a.m. on April 13, 2016 and 8 a.m. on April 28, 2016. GRADING OVERVIEW Your final grade will be determined by how well you engage in the learning activities and perform in the assessment of learning in the course. A weekly course activities calendar provides details on the list of activities and due dates. An end of week due date is Sunday evening up to 11:59 p.m. (a) You can earn up to 100 points by engaging in the practice activities at the OLI course site (i) did I get this; (ii) learn by doing. Points from these practice activities will be based on your efforts to engage as fully as possible by attempting all of the activities included in designated OLI readings identified in the course activities calendar.

(b) You can earn up to 60 points from an average of the grades in your 15 best scores among the 20 learning checkpoints available at the OLI course site that are listed in the course activities calendar. (c) Two case studies, one due at the end of the 6th week and another due at the end of the 15th week accounts for 40 total points (20 points for each case). (d) Several Internet assignments will account for 40 points. These assignments will be made available within the first three weeks of the course. (e) Up to 80 points can be earned in activities involving the use of spreadsheet software (Excel - 40 points) and statistical software (JMP – 40 points). (f) Two examinations account for a total of 80 points (40 points for each exam). The examinations will be based on the course materials as well as the learning activities associated with (a) to (e) above. The mid-term exam will be available during the 7th week and the final exam during the 16th week. Each exam will aim to evaluate what you know and can do in relation to the 12 learning objectives identified on page 3. Specific learning outcomes associated with each of the 12 learning objectives will be identified and shared with the class prior to each exam. COURSE POLICIES
