In this course we will be looking at a variety of areas of history as we study how our modern day society came to be. We will spend our time in this cou rse discussing the challenges we encounter when studying the past as well as how our past has shaped the society we live in today. Units of Study Unit 1: Time In this unit we will be exploring h ow time shapes our cultures and traditions. We will study different ancient civilizations and how they impacted the society we live in today . Highlights of this unit include: Studying archaeology Ancient civilizations Attempting to answer the question: “So how did we get here?” Unit 2: Change In this unit we will be discussing the civilizations of Ancient Greece and Rome a nd how our world was changed during the Middle Ages. Highlights of this unit include: The Fall of Rome Feudalism The effects of technology on societies Unit 3: Causality In this unit we will focus on how changing in worldviews affected the growth of societies and impacted the world we live in today Highlights of this unit include: The Renaissance W orldviews (our own and others) Enlightened Philosophers

Unit 4: Culture

In this unit we will focus on Canada’s cultural roots, specifically our First Nations, Métis

and Inuit roots. We will also spend some time discussing other Canadian minority groups.

Highlights of this unit include:

• Treaties

• Past and present issues of Aboriginal people and other Canadian minorities

• The origin of Aboriginal people

Expectations

1. Please bring all materials to class, this includes pens/pencils, paper and a highlighter 

2. Sit in your assigned seat

3. Follow directions as closely and as quickly as possible

4. Respect others by:

a. Listening to the teacher quietly without interruption when presenting

 b. Raise your hand to ask or answer questions

c. Listening to other students when they are answering a question, asking a question or 

 presenting

5. All assignments are to be handed in on the date they are due at the beginning of class.

6. All school policies will be followed.
