10. Twenty-sixcreditsareneededtoreceiveadiplomafromWestMichiganAviationAcademy.Studentslackingnotmorethanonecreditatgraduationtimewillbepermittedtoparticipateincommencementexercises,providedtheyareenrolledinandhavepaidforsummerschoolforthenecessarycredit.Thediplomawillbewithhelduntilallgraduationrequirementshavebeenfulfilled.
11. RecognizingthatasmallpercentageofstudentsmaybeunabletomeetcertainMichiganMeritCurriculumrequirements,aPersonalCurriculumcanbedeveloped.Pleaseseeaschoolcounselorregardingthispossibility.
12. TheAcademy’sdeansandcounselorswillprovideinformationandassistancetoallstudentstoenablethemtodevelopascheduleofcoursesthatwillmeetrequirementsforcolleges,vocationalschools,oranypost-highschoolprogramselectedbythestudentandher/hisparents.
13. Thefollowingpoliciesshallgovernthegraduationrequirementsoftransferstudents:A. AnystudentwhoattendsWestMichiganAviationAcademyduringtheentiresenioryear
willbeallowedtograduatefromWestMichiganAviationAcademyifs/hefulfillsthegraduationrequirementsofWMAA.
B. AnystudentwhoattendsWestMichiganAviationAcademyforonlythelastsemesterofthesenioryearwillbeallowedtograduatefromWestMichiganAviationAcademyifs/hefulfillsthegraduationrequirementsofthisschool,andtheschools/hehastransferredfromrefusestograntadiploma.
C. AnystudentwhohasattendedWestMichiganAviationAcademythroughthefirstsemesterofthesenioryearandthentransferstoanotherschoolwillbeallowedtoreceiveadiplomafromWestMichiganAviationAcademyandparticipateinthegraduationexercises,ifs/hefulfillsalloftheAcademy'sgraduationrequirements.ThisdoesnotapplytoastudentwhoisexpelledfromWestMichiganAviationAcademy.

SELECTINGCLASSESTheWestMichiganAviationAcademyBoardofDirectorshasestablishedthefollowingguidelinesregardingastudent’scourseload:1. Allstudents,inallgrades,aretobescheduledinsevenclassespersemester.
2. AcollegepreparatorycurriculumconsistsofaMINIMUMOFFOURACADEMICcourses(English,
mathematics,socialstudies,science,worldlanguage)eachofthefourhighschoolyears.Themoreselectivethecollege,themorerigoroustheacademicloadshouldbeinbothcoursedifficultyandinnumberofclassestaken.
3. HonorsandAPSelection:EachdepartmenthasdevelopedcriteriatohelpidentifywhowilllikelybesuccessfulinbothhonorsandAPcourses.Usingdatafromeachdepartment,studentswillbeplacedinand/orencouragedtoselecttheappropriatecourseduringthecourseregistrationandschedulingperiods.
4. Afterfirstsemester,teachersandthedepartmentchairwillidentifystudentswhoarenotmeetingand/orexceedingcourseexpectations.Usingteacherinputandcourseperformancedata,studentsmaybemovedtoadifferentlevelcoursewithequivalentcontent.Forcourse-specificpoliciesregardingmidyearmoves,pleasereviewindividualcoursesyllabi.
5. STEMEndorsement:AstudentcanchoosetoworktowardtheSTEMendorsementofferedat
WMAA.TheSTEMendorsementisinplacetoinspireandrecognizestudentswhohavestronginterestandperformanceinscience,technology,engineering,andmathematics.Theendorsementwillservetosetstudentsapartduringinterviewsandscholarshipcompetitions.StudentswillberecognizedforsuccessfulcompletionoftheSTEMcurriculumontheirdiploma.StudentsinterestedinpursuingtheSTEMEndorsementshouldsubmitanapplicationtotheirschoolcounselor.

GRADELEVELPLACEMENT
StudentsatWestMichiganAviationAcademy,enrolledinsevenclassespersemester,havethepossibilityofearningsevencreditsperyear.Toencouragestudentstomakecontinuingprogresstowardgraduation,creditrequirementshavebeenestablishedforgradelevelplacement.Thenumberofcreditsearnedwilldeterminethegradelevelplacementandthegradeclassificationforeachstudent.Guidelinesforminimalprogresstowardgraduationareasfollows:Forastudenttobein10thGrade--- Studentmusthaveearnedaminimumof 5creditsForastudenttobein11thGrade--- Studentmusthaveearnedaminimumof 11creditsForastudenttobein12thGrade--- Studentmusthaveearnedaminimumof 18creditsGradelevelplacementwillbedeterminedpriortothestartofeachnewschoolyear.Studentsmaynotchangegradelevelsduringtheschoolyear.Studentswhofailtoadvancetothenextgradelevelwillbeaffectedintermsof:

STATEMANDATEDDUALENROLLMENTPROGRAM
EffectiveApril1,1996,PublicAct160andPublicAct258of2000,createdthePostsecondaryEnrollmentOptionsAct,commonlyreferredtoasdualenrollment.ThislawdirectsschooldistrictstoassiststudentsinpayingtuitionandfeesforcoursesatMichiganpublicorprivatecollegesoruniversitiesduringtheacademicschoolyear.Thefollowingaresomeoftheeligibilityguidelines/standards:
1. Studentsingrades9through12maytakeuptotenpostsecondarycoursesduringtheirhighschoolcareer.Forastudentthatfirstdualenrollsin:
a. 9thgrade:notmorethantwocoursesperyearin9th,10th,and11thgrade,andnotmorethanfourcoursesingrade12
b. 10thgrade:notmorethantwocoursesin10thgrade,andnotmorethanfourcoursesin11thand12thgrade
c. 11thor12thgrade:notmorethansixcoursesperyear
2. ThestudenthasearnedaMichiganMeritExamination(MME)endorsementinthecontentareainwhichhe/sheintendstoduallyenroll,ifsuchendorsementisavailable.Thestudentiseligibletotakecoursesinsubjectsforwhichtherearenoendorsementssuchascomputerscience,vocationaleducation,worldlanguagecoursesnotofferedbytheschool,andfineartscourses,aspermittedbytheschool.
3. PublicAct594of2004,oneofthepiecesoflegislationthatcreatedtheMME,requirestheMichiganDepartmentofEducationtosetthepassingscoresonthereadinessexamsthatareusedtodetermineeligibilityfordualenrollment.ThesereadinessexamsaretheMME,thePSAT,theSATandtheACT.UpdatedscorerequirementscanbeprovidedbytheschoolcounselorortheMichiganDepartmentofEducationwebsite.
4. 388.155Rule5(2)Theactsdonotprohibitadistrictfromsupportinganypupilregardlessof
eligibilityundertheseacts.Adistrictmayelecttosupportcollegelevelcoursesorcareerpreparationcoursesforanypupilifitisdeterminedtobeinthebestinterestofthepupil.
5. Studentsmustbeenrolledinboththeeligibleschool(publicorprivate)andeligiblepostsecondaryinstitutionduringthelocalschool’sregularacademicyearandmustbeenrolledinatleastonehighschoolclass.
6. Thecollegecoursescannotbeahobby,craft,orrecreationcourse,orinthesubjectareasof
physicaleducation,theology,divinity,orreligiouseducation.
7. Schooldistrictsarerequiredtopayanamountequaltotheproratedpercentageofthestatewidepupil-weightedaveragefoundationallowance,basedontheproportionoftheschoolyeartheeligiblestudentattendstheeligiblepostsecondaryinstitution.Eligiblechargesincludetuitionandmandatorycoursefees,materialfees,andregistrationfeesrequiredbyaneligibleinstitutionforenrollmentinthecourse.Eligiblechargesdonotincludetransportationorparkingfeesoractivityfees.

WMAADUALENROLLMENTSPECIFICS
1. Whileschoolcounselorsupportisavailable,studentsandparentsareresponsibleformeeting
alldualenrollmentapplicationdeadlinesthroughthecollegeoruniversity.2. StudentswhodualenrollwithWestMichiganAviationAcademymustsignaDualEnrollment
Agreementwiththeirschoolcounselorpriortothefirstdayofthedualenrollmentcourse.3. Studentsshouldmeetwiththeircounselortostartthedualenrollmentapplicationprocess.
a. Forfalldualenrollmentcourses,studentsshouldmeetwiththeircounselorandbegintheapplicationprocessbyMarch1ofthepreviousschoolyear.
b. Forwinterdualenrollment,studentsshouldmeetwiththeircounselorandbeingapplyingnolaterthanOctober1duringthefallterm.
TESTINGOUTPOLICYWestMichiganAviationAcademy,incompliancewiththeSchoolCodeofMichigan,willallowstudentsto“testout”ofanycourseorcreditarea.Thesetestswillbeasounddemonstrationthatastudentmeetsorexceedsthecontentexpectationsassociatedwiththecreditarea.Becausesomeend-of-yeartestsdonotserveascomprehensivemeasuresofcontentandskill“mastery”asexpressedintheMichiganSchoolCode,studentsmayberequiredtodemonstrateareasonabledegreeofmasteryeitherthroughawrittenexamination,writtenpapers,projects,portfolios,orothercomparableforms.Thefollowingstatementswillapplytothetestingoutprovision:1.ThispolicywillapplyequallytoallstudentsatWestMichiganAviationAcademy.2.Courseadvancement,creditand/orwaiverwillonlybegrantedforaC+(77%)orbetter.Ifthereisnofinalexam,creditwillbeearnedbyexhibitingmasterythroughthebasicassessmentusedinthecourseandmayconsistofaportfolio,performancepaper,project,and/orpresentation.
3.Whentestingoutofhighschoolcourses,thistestingoutprovisionwillcounttowardgraduationrequirementcredit.Successfulcompletionofthetestingoutprovisionwillalsocounttowardfulfillmentofarequirementforasubjectareaoracoursesequence.
4.Oncecreditisearnedbytestingout,astudentmaynotreceivecreditthereafterforacourselowerincoursesequenceconcerningthesamesubjectarea.
5.Creditsearnedthroughtestingoutwillnotbeincludedinacomputationofgradepointaverage.6.TheAcademywillestablishreasonabletimeswhentestingoutisavailable.

ONLINECOURSES
WestMichiganAviationAcademystronglybelievesthatface-to-faceclassroominstructionatthehighschoolisthebestlearningenvironmentforstudents.Iftheopportunityexistsforstudentstoenrollinaface-to-facecourseofferedatthehighschool,thestudentisstronglyencouragedtodoso.However,werecognizethattherearesituationswhenastudent’sbestlearningoptionistoenrollinanonline/virtualcourse.Tobesuccessfulinanonlineclass,thestudentmust:
• beaself-starterwithastrongsenseofdirectionandtheabilitytosetgoals.• workindependently,stayontask,andmaintainaregularscheduleofloggingonandkeepingup
withreadings,courseassignments,homeworkandotherexpectations.• possessself-motivation,self-discipline,problem-solvingskills,organization,andself-advocacy
skills
Studentsandparentsmustalsobeawarethat:• GradesareonlyupdatedinPowerSchooltwicepersemester,onceatthemidtermandagainfor
afinalsemestergrade• Studentsgradesarecalculatedbasedonthequalityoftheworkcompletedincombinationwith
thestudent’sprogresswithincourse.Assuch,PowerSchoolgradeswillreflectstudentproficiencyincombinationwithstudentpacing.
• Theoffsite,onlineinstructorisresponsibleforunlockingalltests,quizzes,andassessments.Onlineteachersaregivenupto48hoursafterastudentrequesttounlocktheassessment.Assuch,studentsshouldplantheirtimetoaccommodatethispotentiallapse.
• WhileaWMAAteacher(mentor)monitorsonlinecourseprogress,thestudentwillhavecommunicationwithavirtualteacherwhoisassignedtothecourse.Thevirtualteacheristheonewhogradesassignmentsanddeterminesthefinalgradeforthecourse.
• Studentswishingtoenrollinavirtualcoursemustmeetwithhis/hercounselortobegintheregistrationprocessandselectfromanapprovedlistofonlinecourses.
• StudentsandparentswillalsoberequiredtosigntheOnlineLearningAgreementpriortothestudentgainingaccesstotheonlinecourse.
VIRTUALOPTION#1WMAAprovidesonline/virtualclassestomeettheneedsofstudentsinthefollowingsituations:
• Thestudent’sdailyschedulepreventshim/herfromenrollinginaspecificacademicorelectivecourseofferedbyWMAA,
• ThestudentneedstofulfillagraduationrequirementnotofferedatWMAA,• Thestudentneedstoenrollinacourseforcreditrecoveryanditisnotavailableduringthe
schoolday,i.e.tomakeupcreditforacourses/hepreviouslyfailed,• Thestudent’sscheduleisincompleteands/heneedsanadditionalcourse,• Thestudenthasaprolongedillnessandisunabletoattendschoolforanextendedperiodof
time.

ThisclassisuniquetothecultureandcurriculumattheWestMichiganAviationAcademyandisrequiredforallincomingfreshmen.Thisclassisdesignedtoexposestudentstotherichhistoryofaviationandtheliteratureandartthathasbeeninspiredbyhumanflight.Whileweexplorethisfascinatingfieldacrossmultipleeras,wewillworkonbuildingthenecessaryreading,writing,andpresentationskillsneededtosucceedinthefieldofaviation.Thiscoursewillexaminetheearlydiscoveryandinventionofflyingmachines,significantaviation-relatedmilestones,theimpactofaviationinwarfare,andaviation-relatedcrises.Studentswillbeexpectedtodescribethevariouspeopleandeventskeytodevelopmentsinthefieldofaviation.AHLstudentswillreadseveralnon-fictionandfictionaviation-relatedselectionstoexperienceadiversedisplayoftheinterestandingenuitysurroundingthefieldofaviation.Attheendofthecourse,studentswillbeaskedtocompleteaCreativeResponseProjecttodemonstratenewlearninginspiredbythecontentofthecourse.
