2. Stomatognathic system – human body relation. The supra-systemic factors. The inter-systemic factors:

components of the stomatognathic system (1 hour)

3. Dental clinical examination: general considerations, definition, framing, objectives, algorithm, performance

conditions, classic and modern evaluation methodology, necessary outfit and materials (2 hours)

4. Subjective clinical examination: General information. Anamnesis (definition, methodology, algorithm) –

Reasons for the patient’s coming. History of the current disorder. General personal medical history. Personal dental

history. General hetero-collateral and dental history. Social anamnesis (living and working conditions) (2 hours)

5. Objective clinical examination: General medical examination: Objective signs: Distinguishing general signs with

diagnostic values and the risk level in dentistry. Distinguishing oral manifestations in general diseases. The extra-

oral local exam: objectives, algorithm, methodology, extra-oral examination techniques. The examination of the

6. Intra-oral local examination: algorithm, methodology, examination techniques, evaluation of the hygiene

Objectives of discipline

-The courses present definition and classification of dental caries, epidemiological considerations,

etiopathogeny, mechanisms of demineralization and remineralization of dental tissues and pulpal reactions in

different categories of dental caries. During the practical training in Simulation Laboratory, the students are

trained on using instruments, working positions, isolation methods, cavities preparation, restorative techniques

using dental amalgam and esthetic materials.

Objectives of disciplines

- The courses present the possibilities to classify patients accordingly to cariogenic risk, different clinical

diagnostic techniques and additional diagnostic methods, dental materials and direct restorative techniques

related to clinical situations. During the module of Clinical Cariology, the student achieves the practical

knowledge related to clinical examination, assessment of caries risk, diagnosis of non-cavitary and cavitary

caries, direct restorative techniques using adhesive materials and dental amalgam.

Course Syllabus

1. The preparation of patient and operatory field for clinical exam and caries treatment.

Methods of teeth isolation and separation. Clinical examination in cariology: general

aspects, dental clinical examination, recording charts.

2. Additional examinations: caries indicators, transillumination (FOTI, DI-FOTI),

radiographic examination, electronic method, quantitative light-induced fluorescence

(QLF method), DIAGNOdent. Role of the vitality tests in caries diagnosis.

3. Positive and differential diagnosis in dental caries. The complications of dental caries.

The assessment of cariogenic risk. 3 hours

4. The medical model in the etiological therapy of dental caries.

Preventive/therapeutically techniques used in etiological treatment of carious disease:

methods of removal of infection focal and control of ecological determinants;

remineralization of non-cavitated caries.

3. Individualized techniques for treatment of non-cavitary dental caries demineralization (8 hours)

4. Dental caries treatment using cavity preparation: traditional and minimal invasive techniques. Protection of

the pulp-dentinal complex related to clinical situations. Restorative techniques related to localization, extension,

depth of dental caries, with adhesive materials and amalgam (20 hours)

5. The restoration of extensive destructions using special retention means (4 hours)

6. The restoration with inlays (direct and semidirect techniques) (4 hours)

7. Specific therapy of dental hypersensitivity and dental hyperesthesia (4 hours)
