Vocabulary

Bitmap ImagesAlso called raster images, are made up of a grid of dots known as pixels.

CropThe process of removing portions of an image to create focus or strengthen the composition.

MarqueeA selection marquee is a visible dashed line that indi-cates a selected area of an image. The dashed line is usually animated, which is why the marquee is com-monly referred to as “marching ants”. When a selection is made in an image editing program, all commands and

actions are only applied to the areas within the selection marquee. The areas outside of the selection marquee are masked, or protected.

LuminosityGenerally understood as a measurement of brightness.

GrayscaleThe use of many shades of gray from white to black to represent an image.

DirectionsYou are going to create an image of a faux city skyline. Use your imagination. You can use building photos from the internet. (Since we are using these images for educational purposes.)

When someone looks at your skyline they should feel like they could go there. It should strike a mood. Is your city a happy place? Is it post apocalyptic? Is it industri-al? Make sure you adjust all of your pictures so they have the same color temperature.

Keep everything in the correct perspective.

Create a sense of scale. This is one thing that can be completely lost in even the most inspiring city scape. Look for reference points in the foreground of your image to define the scale of the city behind. Perhaps a boat in the harbor, or a stream of cars heading towards the city. Any of these will add both scale and dimension to your image.

Techniques we will cover are:Adjustment Layers: Levels, Selective Color, Hue/Saturation, Photo FilterTools: The Pen Tool, Burn and Dodge ToolClipping Mask
