AUTUMN 2013 Vol Five No. One OPEN LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP First of all a big ‘thank you’ to you all for your patience over our delayed communication regarding Campaign activities during 2013. We have been confronted with two major hurdles this year, first of all the lack of sufficient funding to meet the costs of producing and mailing an issue of our Courtesy Call magazine (please take time to read Edward Thomas’ ‘Cashing In’ column in this issue); and, secondly, a spate of health problems besetting several of our Campaign Officers and Council members. However, these problems have not prevented the day-to-day activities of the Campaign which can be evidenced by our now busy website (Congratulations Robert Zarywacz!) and the increasing ‘traffic’ using our tweeter and Facebook facilities. Media interest also remains busy with regular radio interviews and national press coverage on issues of the day. As with nearly every other charity in the country, funding is a major problem and has been an item on the Agendas for the 1 st June Annual General Meeting and the 25 th July Executive Meeting. From those deliberations it is Society founded 1986 Registered Charity No. 328296 MAGAZINE facebook.com/campaignforcourtesy twitter.com/cforcourtesy www.campaignforcourtesy.org.uk clear that we must increase our membership if the Campaign is to continue its work – WORK WE CONSIDER VITAL IF COURTESY AND RESPECT IS TO TRIUMPH OVER OBSCENITY, SELFISHNESS AND GREED. You can help by completing the enclosed questionnaire which will enable the Campaign to issue Press Releases based on your answers to the media (newspapers, radio and television). The more questions you can answer the more ammunition we can fire. This will see us living up to our now National status with statements that will have impact. We thank you in anticipation for your support. PGF (Chairman) PS The changes to our list of Officers, Council Members and Regional Executives following the AGM (and reflecting health issues resulting in some enforced retirements) are listed on page 3 of this issue. We welcome any offers to fill the vacant posts indicated. If you want to discuss what is involved please ‘phone HQ on 020 8330 3707 (weekday mornings). Thank you. In March the Campaign Chairman and Secretary visited the Melcombe Primary School in Fulham to give a talk and present a Certificate to the pupils. At this mixed-faith school we were very impressed with the behaviour of the children and the dedication of the staff. With membership spread throughout the UK – and not forgetting our loyal members in other far-flung parts of the world – we are never going to find a venue location that is convenient for everyone. Nevertheless, to receive over 80 apologies for non-attendance was a very pleasant surprise. As a lot of these ‘phoned HQ personally it certainly pleased the Chairman as it afforded him the opportunity to speak to members who had long been just names on a database label. Amongst the comments were: DR N BHUVANENDRAN...”customer service sadly lacking in many stores/manners are good in New Zealand and Canada/would like to see annual regional meetings organised”. PENELOPE BRETT...”would like a supply of Campaign stickers to use”. ROSEMARY DABBS...”I would be happy to give talks on Courtesy”. SANDRA ARTHURS...”I am very keen to give talks about the Campaign”. JON DUUS JENSON...”My pet hate is seeing litter dropped in the street”. OLYMPIC VOLUNTEERS TALK TO AGM ANN SKIDMORE and DOROTHY MDOE (just two of the 70,000 Olympic Games-makers) attended our AGM and took part in an enlightening question-and-answer session. A WARNING AND A CALL TOARMS

Straight talking time. Only afraction of the membership waspresent at the AGM to hear aboutthe serious financial situationfaced by the National Campaignfor Courtesy. For the purposes ofthe meeting I drew on recordstaking the Society back to October2010 followed by a period of sometwo and a half years thereafter.Over such period we gained 41new members but lost 111members, with no more than 13 ofthose deceased. That provided anet loss of 70 during that time.

Our current total membershipstands at 350, of whom 114 payno subscriptions by virtue of theirvoucher or life membershipstatus. It therefore follows that iftrends were to continue, we wouldhave 166 paying members byOctober 2015 and 96 by April2018. Furthermore, it should benoted that a large number of ourmembers are in the upper agebracket (some write to me to pointout they are in their 90s), so thedeath rate is likely to increasemore rapidly.

I have researched those lostmembers to assess how manywere full members paying £20,concessionary members paying£7.50, and life members payingnothing at all. The object was to

calculate the total income lossand then to assess the likely lossin the future per annum. Based onthe findings, I have estimated anannual loss of £478.

In addition to subscriptionsthere are two other areas ofincome. The first is that ofdonations, which varysubstantially. Reliability shouldtherefore not be placed on thissource in assessing any plans. Ihave excluded all ‘one-off’donations: those occasioned frompatrons, legacies (only one in thelast three years and nominal atthat), GEMotoring Assist, and theSociety of Oddfellows. Of the rest, largely from our members, I havetaken a yearly average based ondonations from October 2010. Theannual average figure is £625.

The second of the two areas,Income Tax reclaim, is likewisenot to be relied on as the amounthas decreased over the yearspartly because of less take-up oninvitation, loss of members whohad gift-aided their subscriptions, and because of government taxchanges. The average annualincome from this source over thelast three years is £235.

The total income this yearbased on the above figures, andonly if all things remain equal, taking together likelysubscriptions, donations andIncome Tax reclaim, is £3,875.The total expenditure, allowing forthe production of no more thanONE edition of Courtesy Call inthe year, is likely to be £3,364.That would provide for a surplusof £511. It will have been noted, however, that we can expect tolose in the region of £478 eachyear owing to an annual net lossof membership.

The inevitable conclusion, therefore, is that in these financialcircumstances and in the absenceof radical change, the NationalCampaign for Courtesy would nolonger face a viable future.

THE CAMPAIGN’S VITAL WORKBut it need not be like that. Giventhe vibrant personnel that havecome onboard in the last twoyears, we could be in with afighting chance. We have a soundwebsite established now, thanksto the energetic Robert Zarywacz. We have the even more energeticPaul Smith, devoted tosportsmanship.

We also have more reasonthan ever to continue in existence. The same technology that hasbrought us the internet hasbrought us cybercrime. As aneditorial in The Economist statedin July, there is a less reassuringreason for the fall in crime otherthan the usually cited societalchanges: better car alarms, DNAdatabases and CCTV adding tothe chances of being caught.Increasingly, The Economistobserves, criminals are migratingto the online world and crimessuch as credit card fraud tend notto be picked up by traditionalmeasures. ‘As policing adapts tothe technological age, it’s as wellto recall that criminals are doingso too.’

THE PROBLEMS WE FACEThe same is true of the ill-mannered. Some of the officers ofthe Campaign were hauled in bythe media to discuss the case ofJo Clarke, refused service inSainsbury’s because she was onher mobile phone at the checkout.Indignant, she took her case tothe media only to find it backfiringon her when she received scant ifany support. According to a DailyTelegraph poll in the summer,49% of 18 to 24 year-oldsregularly check their phones whileeating with their family. Recently Ientertained two people formorning coffee. The wife set abouttexting, ending conversation inthe room. By way of apparentjustification she declared: ‘It’swork.’ Only because the signalwas poor did she refrain and wewere thus able to continue theobject of the agreed visit: socialintercourse.

We hear from another studythat four in ten people prefer notto use the term ‘thank you’anymore because it is ‘too formal’.13% actually consider it ‘old-fashioned’. And what is supposedto replace it? Take your pick fromany one of ‘cheers’, ‘cool’, ‘niceone’, ‘wicked’ and ‘boom’. At themost serious end of the spectrumis the internet school-age bullyingand the recent tragic case ofHannah Smith who killed herselfbecause of it.

At the same time the tideseems to be turning over theassessment of Mary Whitehousewith support for her coming fromthe unlikeliest of quarters.Following publication of a newbook about her during thesummer, Time Out said: ‘For oncewe’re inclined to side with Mary’.From The Guardian came: ‘Theuptight, upright campaigner hada point’. The New Statesmandeclared: ‘Now that everyconceivable depravity is only amouse click away, you can’t helpwondering if Whitehouse was onto something’. And from MissJulie Walters who portrayed MaryWhitehouse in a television film:‘She had a point…and inretrospect I think we could haveunderstood her much better’.

WE MUST COMMUNICATEThere is still a lot for thisCampaign of ours to do. We wantto get back to communicating withyou much more and we arelooking into the possibilities ofcheaper, more regularnewsletters. But we must havemore funds. It is over to you now.Go out and recruit moremembers, one for each of the 350of us. What a difference thatwould make to our income. Doyou know anybody with some sortof financial clout who would throwin a few hundred pounds, or a fewthousand, and be glad to havetheir name emblazoned inassociation with our cause? If youlook on our website you can seenew members can now subscribevia PayPal. Three people havedone so already, and you knowwhat? They are all senior citizens. You don’t have to be a techno whizkid to get thus involved. Whatabout Gift Aid? Are you paying taxand are therefore someone whocould benefit us with your subsand donations and not doing soalready? Let me know and I cansend you a form. However, the fewof us who make up the committeeand meet every quarter to do whatwe can simply cannot do it allanymore. We need your practicalhelp. How about it?

GEM Motoring Assist Press Releases ROAD RAGE – WAVE IT

GOODBYERoad safety organisation GEMMotoring Assist in co-operationwith The National Campaign forCourtesy is urging motorists to‘wave away’ road rage.DAVID WILLIAMS, MBE - ChiefExecutive of GEM Motoring Assistand Vice-Chairman of theNational Campaign for Courtesysaid, “An appreciative orapologetic gesture can withoutdoubt bring about a change inattitude from drivers around you.Acknowledging with a simplewave, any consideration directedat you or to apologise for makingan error on the road will reduceincidents that can so often lead tohostile behaviour and crashes.”Mr Williams went on to say“Although the term ‘road rage’ isfairly new, hostile anddiscourteous behaviour on ourroads is not. Indeed as long agoas1932 GEM was formed (underits original name of the Companyof Veteran Motorists) partly toeliminate such ‘ungentlemanlyand unsafe’ behaviour. GEM’soriginal slogan of the 3C’s – Care,Courtesy and Concentration –still represent the qualitiesneeded by good, safe driverstoday.

“Research has shownthat the main factors

identified as leading to road rageare stress, fatigue andfrustration.”Mr Williams concluded by saying,“If drivers adopt a more courteousapproach to their driving, thesefactors could be greatly reducedand maybe the problem of roadrage could simply be wavedaway.”

JOINT CALL TO IMPROVEMANNERS ON THE MOVE

With tempers fraying in recentrecord-breaking summertemperatures the NationalCampaign for Courtesy and roadsafety organisation GEMMotoring Assist are workingtogether to encourage peopleusing public transport to be politeand courteous to each other andto hard working employees ofbus, rail and air services.Peter G Foot, Chairman of theCampaign for Courtesy said,“There is never a greater need forgood humour and courtesy thanwhen you are crushed bystrangers in a late train. It is a bitof a test of character, but if welose our composure the sufferingis worse. It is a British traditionto treat people with respect intrying situations.”

Peter added, “Likewise driverscaught in traffic hold-ups mustalso ‘keep cool’ and avoid thefrustration that can so easily leadto road rage and even crashes. Our joint venture with GEMMotoring Assist to encourage amore courteous approach by alltravellers will hopefully makejourneys both safer and moreenjoyable.”A courtesy code for drivers isavailable from GEM MOTORINGASSIST. (see www.motoringassist.com)

DRIVERS URGED TO ‘TAKE ABREAK’ FOR COURTESY

Research has shown that driverswho are tired at the wheel are farmore likely to be involved in ‘RoadRage’ incidents, and so theNational Campaign for Courtesyare working in conjunction withroad safety organisation GEMMotoring Assist to encouragedrivers to take more breaks whendriving long distances.DAVID WILLIAMS, MBE Vice-Chairman of the Campaign forCourtesy and Chief Executive ofGEM Motoring Assist said, “In ourfast moving and pressurisedsociety drivers too often fail toadhere to the safety advice to takea break of about 10 - 15 minutesafter every two hours of driving.

Tiredness can easily lead to a lossof concentration which means thebasic courtesy code of driving isignored.“We have produced a short videoto explain to drivers theimportance of not driving whilefatigued and we hope that asmany motorists as possible willwatch the film and take on boardthe important life-savingmessages given.”

The wonders of instantcommunication in use today arebrilliant. But in business, suchcommunication demandsimmediate responses. No time tocount to ten and any hesitationcan be construed as indecisivebehaviour. Personal relationshipscan suffer from rushed responses.Little wonder then that our 21st

Century lifestyle is stress-ridden.

While an increasing oldergeneration pines for the past lifethat allowed time for meditationand contemplation, we are allexpected to tolerate theunsociable dark-side of living in aworld hell-bent on speed.Whether it is saving twentyminutes through a new London-to-Birmingham rail link or aserve-yourself supermarketcheckout, everybody needs astroll-in-the-park moment or a

bird-song pause if stress is not todominate our day.

It is a fact that mobile ‘phonesdominate most hours of manypeople’s day. Indeed, when suchpeople are out-and-about they areitching to communicate withsomeone and appear completelyunaware of the presence of othersor anything occurring aroundthem. And why do they invariablylook down at the floor/pavement?And why do many raise thedecibel level of their so-interestingconversations? Recently, DarrenGroom, a coffee shop ownerproprietor in Norwich, refused toserve customers while they usedtheir mobiles. He is to beapplauded for his stance. Indeed,we should follow his example.

Earlier this year, Campaign Chairman PETER G FOOT underwent MRIscans at the Kingston Hospital MRI Unit resulting in a hip replacementoperation. The ‘ordeal’ proved to be a wonderful experience due to theprofessional treatment provided by a team of experts who clearly enjoyedtheir work. Later JIM KENNEDY was on hand to take the above pictureof the Chairman taken with his happy team (which included ImagingServices Manager LINDA MESTRE (left), Radiographers RITA CAROCO(third from left) and FRANCES O’DONOGHUE (right); also pictured arethe ever-smiling receptionists ANGELA TAYLOR, NICOLA HILL, MINAROCHA and (lucky boy) ASHLEY OLLETT). REGIONAL MEETINGS?While it is necessary to choose aLondon venue for our AnnualGeneral Meetings, the volume ofapologies received has beenamazing. Around eighty members‘phoned through their apologies, thereasons for non-attendance rangingfrom holiday dates, distance, illnessand incapacity to travel. However, itdid provide a wonderful opportunityto talk to many members for thefirst time, thus gathering valuablefeedback about members’ viewsabout issues of courtesy.Naturally, members from all partsof the UK wished that our meetingstake place in ‘their patch’ as analternative to the capital. Many ofus remember the meetings/seminarevents we held so successfully inEastbourne and Southport in 2008.But the level of our funds in recentyears have prevented the staging offurther such events which involvethe costs of venue hire, catering andtravel/overnight stay expenses forthe attending officers. However, now that we have RegionalExecutives appointed in most of the20 English Regions, it has beensuggested that members beencouraged to hold their ownmeetings. Member JacquelineDeeks has expressed a desire tomeet up with other members wholive around the Littlehampton areaof West Sussex. To this end, it hasbeen proposed that we write toother members in that regioninviting them to make contact withJacqueline to see what can bearranged. Naturally, we will bepleased to hear from members inother regions who would like suchcommunication between kindredspirits. It is clear that our causecan unite people and frequentlyresult in positive and rewardingfriendships.

Two of our Eastbourne members JAN LYNTON and OLIVIABREEZE were so impressed with the courteous service theyreceived when visiting the Jo Malone Boutique in Brighton thissummer that they immediately nominated two members of thestaff for Campaign Certificates. Assistant Manager ELEISELUCRAFT had suffered from Guillen Barre Syndrome paralysisin her youth but now gives time to discuss the condition to othersufferers. After undertaking a course at Beauty Base London, she moved on to doing freelance makeup photoshoots for Voguemagazine. Senior Stylist JIMMIE MILLIS was previously a men’sfashion model. A keen sportsman, Jimmie was a prize-winningshow-jumper at Hickstead. Our picture shows Jimmie andEleise holding their certificates after receiving them fromCampaign member JAN LYNTON and Campaign ChairmanPETER G FOOT.
