THE BIG BANG:WHAT WAS IT?

The big bang was an explosion that supposedly occurred 13.7 billion years ago.

This explosion was considered the beginning of the universe. Through many years of uniting atoms, and particles that came out

of the Big Bang explosion, stars, planets, and even galaxies began to form.

The Big Bang was not an explosion of matter. There was matter inside the explosion and space only came into existence as the Big Bang occurred.

WHAT CAME OUT OF THE BIG BANG?

It was not until thousands of years after the big bang occurred that the first atoms formed.

Giant clouds of hydrogen, helium, and lithium later united through gravity to make the first stars and galaxies.

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE BIG BANG?

Less than one billionth of a second after the big bang occurred, a bubble much smaller than a fraction of an atom materialized. This bubble is the universe. Unimaginably small, yet unimaginably hot.

This bubble became so dense and hot that it exploded and began expanding rapidly. In fact, it is still slowly and gradually expanding today!

HOW DO SCIENTISTS KNOW ABOUT THE BIG BANG?

Astronomers could explore and research the afterglow of the explosion of the big bang.

Right now, scientists can recognize that the universe is expanding rapidly – meaning, the separations between galaxies is getting larger and larger.

Also, the big bang perfectly explains the abundance of helium and other nuclei in the universe.

WHAT WAS THE RED SHIFT?

The red shift is the name for the act of galaxies moving farther and farther away from each other.

When light from far-flung galaxies reach Earth, the space between Earth and that galaxy increases, and consequently, wavelengths stretch.

WHO WAS ASTRONOMER EDWIN HUBBLE?

Edwin Hubble was an American Astronomer who, quite possibly, made the most important discovery in modern astronomy.

As a result of his discovery that the universe is continuously “expanding” and galaxies are rapidly moving away from each other, the Big Bang Theory formed.

Dr. Hubble also discovered that the farther away a galaxy is to Earth, the quicker the galaxy is In fact, moving away.
