Join LUM online — Summer s Over for LUM 5th Quarter As the school year begins, the teachers with the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program are confident that our students are better prepared than their peers to succeed. During this ten week summer program, the trained staff create an academically stimulating environment for our students to learn during the summer months — which includes active learning, educational enrichment activities and study trips. The LUM Immigration Clinic has teamed up with the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy to offer FREE citizenship classes beginning on Tuesday, August 25th for persons interested in learning more about US history and government. Details are as follows: Five-week session—August 25 - September 24 Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:30 - 8:00 pm. LARA, 1100 Elizabeth Street, Lafayette While the class is geared toward preparing permanent residents for the naturalization exam, anyone is welcome to attend. During their final week of 5th Quarter last week, the studentsschedule was filled with special trips and events. They swam in the Vinton pool, picked up their free book at Barnes & Noble Bookstore for participating in their Summer Reading program (left), enjoyed a guided educational tour of the Soilmaker facility (above), and had some fun with the Covenant Church Youth Group (below) at Columbian Park. Each 5th Quarter student also took a post-test during the final week. The results of the post-test will soon be compared to their pre-test scores and a control group to help measure our success and guide our curriculum decisions in the future. Covenants Youth Group spent the afternoon reading, playing indoor and outdoor games, and taking a trip to Columbian Park to explore, play, and learn. Citizenship Classes Offered by LUM Volunteer Opportunities—LUM Immigration Clinic—Citizenship Classes LUM Immigration Clinic is seeking additional volunteers to help pass out materials, engage students regarding discussion topics, and review vocabulary & civics questions in preparation for the naturalization interview. LUM is also seeking individuals/groups who might be willing to interact with students to provide refreshments during one or more of the classes. This is a great opportunity for church or civic groups to learn more about the naturalization process and to meet future citizens. Finally volunteers are needed to teach the next five-week session of classes which is tentatively scheduled to begin in October 2015. Currently there are openings for Weekend Coordinators and Overnight Shelter Volunteers. Weekend Coordinators Responsible for managing the LUM overnight shelter one or more Friday or Saturday nights a month from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; sleep from 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. provided no emergencies occur. Weekend Coordinators supervise shelter guests and volunteers; and are fully trained prior to their first shift. Summer’s Over for LUM 5th Quarter

As the school year begins, the teachers with the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program are confident that our students are better prepared than their peers to succeed. During this ten week summer program, the trained staff create an academically stimulating environment for our students to learn during the summer months —

which includes active learning, educational enrichment activities and study trips.

The LUM Immigration Clinic has teamed up with the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy to offer FREE citizenship classes beginning on Tuesday, August 25th for persons interested in learning more about US history and government. Details are as follows:

Five-week session—August 25 - September 24

Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:30 - 8:00 pm. LARA, 1100 Elizabeth Street, Lafayette

While the class is geared toward preparing permanent residents for the naturalization exam, anyone is welcome to attend.

During their final week of 5th Quarter last week, the students’ schedule was filled with special trips and events. They swam in the Vinton pool, picked up their free book at Barnes & Noble Bookstore for participating in their Summer Reading program (left), enjoyed a guided educational tour of the Soilmaker facility (above), and had some fun with the Covenant Church Youth Group (below) at Columbian Park. Each 5th Quarter student also took a post-test during the final week.

Citizenship Classes Offered by LUM

Volunteer Opportunities—LUM Immigration Clinic—Citizenship Classes

LUM Immigration Clinic is seeking additional volunteers to help pass out materials, engage students regarding discussion topics, and review vocabulary & civics questions in preparation for the naturalization interview. LUM is also seeking individuals/groups who might be willing to interact with students to provide refreshments during one or more of the classes.
