Covenant is proud to announce that Pastor Quentin Wallace has a new offi- cial titlethe Reverend Doctor Quentin Wallace. On May 11, 2018, Pastor Wal- lace will be graduating from the Doctor of Ministry program from the Palmer Seminary of Eastern University. Pastor Wallace began the doctoral program soon after his appointment to Covenant. His thesis was “Inspiring a Congregation Through Pro- phetic Preaching and Teaching to Become Missional Wit- nesses to Neighbors.” His program involved learning new practices for effective ministry in the 21st Century, exam- ining himself as a leader, and understanding the church as a family system. All of this with a goal to enhance the min- istry of the local church. We congratulate Pastor Wallace on this important accomplishment in his ministerial ca- reer. In this month’s pastor’s article, he writes: Hello Church Family, I thank you all dearly for your support of my doctoral pro- ject that I could not have completed without my Covenant family. As a result, I will be graduating from the Doctor of Ministry program on May 11, 2018, from Palmer Seminary of Eastern University. What I have learned, I intend to use to assist our church in spiritual and numerical growth. To start the process moving forward, the Lord has led the leadership team and me to host a two-night revival on June 7-8. The theme for our revival is “Healing From the Inside Out.” Our preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Louis Butcher Jr. (former pastor of Brightside Baptist church). Services will begin each evening at 6:30 p.m. We anticipate a great turnout of our members. Please pray for and plan to at- tend this revival and expect God to do great things for our church and community as a result. Introducing the Rev. LET’S REMEMBER OUR SHUT-INS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR The Care Team wants to remember our Covenant shut-ins all throughout the year, not just at Christmas time. Therefore, a shut-in address list, with birthdays listed, will be available to pick up in the Gathering Area at any time. Drop a note or send a card to those members who are no longer able to attend church. This will help to brighten their day.

COVENANT WOMEN SCHEDULE PAINT PARTY On May 12 at 12 noon in Bethany Hall, the women of Covenant will be holding a Paint Party where we will create works of art on canvas. An ex-pert artist will guide us through the process of creating our very own works of art. Artistic skills are not nec-essary. This will be a time of fellow-ship and fun. There will be light re-freshments as and a creative “mocktail” (Christian cocktail) con-test. The cost is $25, which includes all materials including your artwork to take home. A portion of your contri-bution will be given to a local charity. We need at least 10 women in order to hold the event. Please see Minister Brenda ASAP is you are interested.

WHO DOESN’T LIKE TO EAT! Please come and enjoy lunch or din-ner at the Centerville Isaac’s restau-rant on Wednesday, May 16, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and help our Cove-nant Outreach Team at the same time. All you need to do is grab a flyer from the table in the Gathering Area and take it with you to Isaac’s that day. Twenty-five percent of your pur-chase will be returned to the Out-reach Team and used to support a variety of missions.

GET TO KNOW COVENANT’S CHILDREN THIS SUMMER In our usual tradition, we give our Sunday School teachers a break in the summer. This presents a wonderful opportunity for other members of our congregation to get to know the chil-dren in the church. The Nurture Team is looking for members who would like to spend some quality time shar-ing your talents and love of God with our young people. If you feel led to donate one hour or more over the summer to share with our children, please see Minister Brenda or any member of the Nurture Team. If you are willing, we will provide the sup-port and training that you need to accomplish the task. Please consider this most important chance to be a blessing to our children.

HELP WANTED We're looking for more volunteer op-erators to run the sound and com-puter systems during worship, espe-cially during the 9:00 a.m. service. You don't have to be an expert, we will train! Come to our next training session from 10-12 on Saturday, May 12. Contact Roger Kresge to learn m o r e . 717-299-4613.

MEAL COORDINATORS NEEDED We are still looking for a new person or persons to assume the role of coor-dinator for the Community Thanksgiv-ing Dinner at Covenant. It is our de-sire to continue this long standing ministry to our community. If you feel called to serve or would like more information about the role and re-sponsibilities of the job, contact for-mer coordinators Sue Kresge, Greg Smith, or Kathy Smith.

We are pleased to officially an-nounce that Roger Kresge has been formally approved as a Certified Lay Minister and assigned by Bishop Peggy to be Lay Supply Pastor at Peach Bottom Mt. Zion UMC in southern Lancaster County effective July 1.

The nine members of the 2018 CLM class will be recog-nized at a special service with Bishop Peggy Johnson speaking at 4:00 PM on Sunday, June 3, at Christ UMC in Lansdale. All are invited to this service. Roger’s assignment is the culmination of a process that started in May of 2010, when he took the Christ Servant Ministry Basic course. Since then he has had over a hun-dred hours of training and formal preparation, including preaching, leading worship, church technology, church administration and leadership, United Methodist history and polity, the role and responsibilities of lay pastors, plus

both Basic Sexual Ethics and Changing Racism workshops. The process also included interviews with and approvals from our own SPRC and senior pastor, the district superin-tendent, District Committee on Ordained Ministry, and the Conference Committee on Certified Lay Ministry. As a Certified Lay Speaker, Roger has been asked to preach at several churches here in the Lancaster area, and at Eastern Pennsylvania Conference events like the annual Laity Retreat and the Academy for Laity. In order to accept the Mt. Zion assignment, Roger will be stepping down as Covenant's Lay Leader. He will continue to participate in our 9:00 a.m. contemporary service each Sunday, and then travel to Mt. Zion for the 11:00 a.m. worship service there. As pastor at Mt. Zion, he will also participate in the annual Rawlinsville Camp Meeting. We congratulate Roger on his certification and pray for his ministry at Mt. Zion.

From the Board of Trustees... The Board of Trustees would like to thank several persons who have been very suppor-tive of our work in various ways. Betty Farkas gave a very generous contribution to the maintenance budget of the board in memory of her husband, Andrew Farkas. These funds were used to replace four antiquated thermo-stats in the church. The board appreciated Betty’s very thoughtful way of remembering her husband. A tattered flag has been removed from the flagpole, and John Seyfert has volunteered to replace that flag with a new one. A big “thank you” is sent John’s way. In addition, the board would like to thank Tom Buter for the many times over many years that he has replaced flags for the church. The board finds it is dealing with a building that, on the south side, is 91 years old, and, on the north side, is 65 years old. In addition, there is an organ that is 91 years old and needs special care. The church is used five days a week by the Child Care Center and one day a week by the congregation. Special events and meetings mean many other uses each week. As a board, we find ourselves fo-cused so much on the major issues with which we deal that we sometimes overlook the mi-nor problems that arise. Borrowing a frequently used phrase, “If you see something, say something!” If you notice some maintenance or building issue, please mention it to any member of the board. The board is concerned about the care and main-tenance of our building, and any member is willing to deal with your issues or take them to the next board meeting. Problems needing immediate action will be cared for as quickly as possible. Did you know there are adult vaccina-tions? The need for vaccinations doesn’t end after childhood. Every year people die or are injured by dis-eases that could have been pre-vented. While the vaccines you need depend on your health, medical history and risk exposure to illnesses, take a look at what are considered routine for most adults 50 and older. Flu Flu is caused by the influenza virus; it is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease. This vaccination is recom-mended for people of all ages. This is an annual vaccination. Shingles Shingles is a painful, localized skin rash, often with blisters. Shingles is

the same virus as chickenpox. The virus remains in the nerve cells after a chickenpox infection. If you have had

chickenpox you could have shingles break out. Many of us have had the vaccine Zostavax, but the CDC is now recommending a newer vaccine called Shingrix. The CDC is recommending if you had Zostavax to talk with your

doctor about getting Shingrix. Shin-gles vaccine is for people 50 and older. Tetanus Tetanus is a bacterial infection that develops in contaminated wounds. A tetanus booster is recommended every ten years. If you would have a deep dirty wound, you may need a booster if your last vaccination was more than five years ago. As always talk with your health care provider about these vaccines and if there are any others you should have. Stay healthy! Cindy Smith, Wellness Coach

February – Black History Month The Bright Side Baptist Young Adult Choir along with their Children’s Choir blessed us at the 9:00 a.m. service by singing two songs. They also joined Cove-nant Youth in singing a song led by Minister Brenda. March For our extended Sunday, Destiny’s mother Carmen Velazquez blessed us with a Taco Dinner. Those Dorito Tacos were amazing. We also had a wonderful time at the Easter Egg Hunt and Party that Minister Brenda organized. We had the opportunity to socialize with other young people. We even had two of them show up for service on Easter. April Easter was early this year, falling on the first Sunday of April. For our extended Sunday, the Stemmer’s had a potato bar spread. We are ready for a repeat of that. A few of the Youth visited Gretna Glen for the free youth services in March and April. They do not have free programs during the summer since they are focus-ing on Summer Camps. We are blessed at Covenant that our youth have the opportunity to attend Summer Camps with the Church paying some of the expenses. If you are interested please contact Minister Santa at the church for details or see the April issue of Echoes for Pastor Don’s article. Please look out for the youth on second Sundays as they serve as greeters in the lobby. They appreciate your encouragement. Save the date - June 2, 2018, will be our annual Youth Car Wash Fundraiser. We look forward to washing your car. Please come out and support us. July 22-26 is VBS! The theme is “SHIPWRECKED”. We will be having a youth class this year. Please encourage young people to register for this amazing opportunity to get better anchored with the Lord. Registration begins June 1st. You can register on-line at covenant-umc.com.

There is still time to register for Summer Church Camp, but register soon, as popular camps fill up quickly. All camp details appear in registration book-lets available in the church office or from Pastor Don. Covenant Church will pay 1/2 of the basic fee (up to $220) for each camper from Covenant Church. Schol-arships for additional funding are available by talking with one of the pastors. We want to ensure that all children and youth who want to go to summer church camp are able to go.

Summer Church Camp

I am the church, you are the church. Lay people are just as important to the work of the church as or-dained ministers. Sign up for the 2018 Laity Academy and learn how you can better use your gifts and graces to make disciples and build God's Kingdom here on earth. This year's Academy is August 3-5 at Quaker-town UMC; you can commute, but discount hotel rooms are also available.

Remember, Paul tells us that we all are given differ-ent gifts (which may include administration, preaching, and teaching) but no one gift is more valuable than any other, and we are all to

use our gifts as followers of Christ to build up the body of the church. There’s a place for all of us in the race to make disciples.

Our Laity Academy strives to provide the education, the fellowship, and the nurturing for each of us to not only embrace our gifts from God, but to use those gifts to help others in their walk in Christ.

Registration for the 35th annual Laity Academy will open in early April. Talk with Roger Kresge, our church Lay Leader, or use this link to find it at our Eastern PA Conference website: https://www.epaumc.org/ministry/lay/

Heritage Sunday Rec-ognition

Reflections from 75-Year Member, Andy Loechner

What event in the life of the church was special to you? When I became a member. Peg and I were married in the church, July 14,

1951. Our daughters, Peggy Sue and Ellen, were baptized

in the church. Peggy Sue and her husband Paul Diller were teach-

ers. What area of church life most interested you? Special music events The committees I was involved in. What position that you held gave you the greatest satisfaction, or perhaps how did you feel you best served God? Counseling young people and friends. What person/persons in the church most influenced you or had the greatest impact on your life? Jack Clare What is your favorite hymn? How Great Thou Art I’ve Just Seen Jesus What is your favorite scripture? John 3:16 What words of wisdom do you have for those who are considering making Covenant their church home? We have three key ingredients for a successful

church. Best choir in town, a beautiful church, and a great preacher.

What new ministry would you most like to see Cove-nant Church embrace? I don’t like changes. Stay with what has been

working for years.
