IT IS NOT HARD to locate a talented highschool senior. Guidance counselors,principals and teachers can tick off a longlist of bright, highly accomplished pupils,and thats reassuringfor their futures . . .and ours. But there are a few who are off-the-charts memorable. Call them SuperStudents.

This year were showcasing six: leaderswith mind-bending rsums and lengthylists of extracurriculars, from the 17-year-old whos put in three summers ofgenomic research at NationwideChildrens Hospital to the Russian-bornvaledictorian who takes classes at OSUand then rocks out the sequins and spraytan as a competitive ballroom dancer.

They come from all sorts ofbackgrounds: privileged, middle class,extremely challenged. We are notpermitted to choose the frame of ourdestiny, Dag Hammarskjold, former U.N.secretary general, once noted. But whatwe put into it is ours. These teens seem torecognize and seize their opportunitiesandmost refreshinglycome across asactively grateful for them.

THE ARTIST Theres so much intricacy, such detail andpower in the mixed media works of ZachWilke, 18, it takes several minutes of carefulexamination to fully appreciate their scope.

Its art thats getting noticed andwinning awards.

The Ohio Governors Youth Art

Exhibition has chosen his mixed mediaentry, Dependance, a series of threephotographs that are drawn on with penand ink, as one of the 300 pieces to behonored at the James A. Rhodes StateOffice Tower through May 17. His video,Nocturnal, which utilizes stop-framephotos, was honored at the exhibitionsregional level.

And Wilke was one of six Central Ohiostudents to win the Regional Silver Keyfrom the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.His portfolio of eight mixed media pieceswith the theme Growth/Change took afull four months to complete as part of thesenior portfolio class taught by DanGerdeman at Hilliard Davidson HighSchool. Theyve got an abstract quality,Wilke notes, that leaves them open tointerpretation.

His creative process for the portfoliopieces began with images he shot on film.In the darkroom, Wilke layered twonegative strips and printed them together.He then used black and white acrylic paintto create imagestrees, vines, roots andwaterfallson the surface, making it nearlyimpossible to tell where the film imageends and his painting begins.

Last year, two prestigious requests weremade of Hilliard Davidsons artdepartment, and Wilkes work was chosenboth times. The Columbus Museum of Artfeatured student art in Bound, its three-month exhibition in the communitygallery; two of Wilkes pen and ink

drawings were on display. Then the WhiteHouse tapped the school to design the 26ornaments needed for the outdoor OhioChristmas treeone of them was Wilkescreation. We did an out-and-back classtrip to D.C. once the tree was up, Wilkesays. An exhausting day, but very exciting.

Like many successful art students,Wilke has been drawing for as long as hecan remember. I dont know where hegets it, says his mom, Lisa, an accountdirector at BCD Travel. Not from his dad,either, she notesMikes an accountant atHonda. But five years of Saturday morningart classes at CCAD, starting in fourthgrade, helped.

with landscape photography, Photoshopportraits and, lately, light painting. Heexplains, I use a digital camera, tripod anda long exposure setting at night. Then Ipaint images with a flashlight or a string ofChristmas lights. Its cool.

After working as a lifeguard at a poolthis summer, Wilke will focus onphotography and graphic design at an artcollege in the fall. CCAD, University ofCincinnati and Chicagos ColumbiaCollege are top choices.

Gerdeman, whos instructed Wilke indrawing, notes, Zachs applied hisclassroom knowledge in originaldirections, in exemplary fashion. Hes fusedphotography and drawing like aprofessional artistyou just dont see that inhigh school. Hes got guts and charisma.

FIRST, MASTERING ENGLISH;NOW, OFF TO THE IVY LEAGUE She spoke no English when she movedhere six years ago. A placement testadministered by Columbus City Schoolsdetermined that Sakina Abu Boakye couldcontinue in sixth grade, an academic yearthat had begun in a rural middle school onthe outskirts of Milan, Italy. Her parents,originally from Ghana, were making a newlife in the United States, searching for abetter opportunity after leaving the intenseracial discrimination they faced as Africanimmigrants in Italy.

It was a rough transition, Boakye saysquietly. But I watched the Disney Channelto pick up English. After the first month, itcame pretty easily.

So easily, in fact, for this gifted student

that she aced the English portion of herACTs with a perfect score. So easily, shesbecome Ivy League material and will attendDartmouth in the fall.

But this Cinderella story has not been aperfect fairy tale for the 17-year-old, whos aslender, fashionably dressed, outgoingstudent quick to flash her broad smile. Herparents have divorced. Her mom, Amma,lives in Iowa; they speak frequently byphone. Ishamel, her dad, works two jobs, as a janitor and a caregiver fordevelopmentally disabled patients. Hiswork schedule precludes many of her after-school activitiesshe has no way to gethome. Boakye misses her older sister, whostayed behind when the family moved here.

And yet, the girl who had never ridden aschool bus nor had her own locker, whostill answered the phone in Italian monthsafter moving to the U.S., found her way.Securing a spot at Columbus AlternativeHigh School, a magnet school foracademically gifted students, she tackledtough courses and was a constant presenceon the honor roll. In physics, I didntbreeze through. I had to try really hard, shesays, smiling. She took four AP classes andscored well enough in each to become anAP Scholar with Honor. In addition to Twi,a Ghanaian dialect, and Italian, she addedSpanish to the list of languages she speaks.Studying government, her love for politicsblossomed. She became editor of theschool newspaper, president of theNational Honor Society and founded aservice club.

Nobodys better suited to an IvyLeague than Sakina, says SebastianRestrepo, director of HighRise Academy, amentoring program for low-income

students that provides assistance with testprep, college applications and financial aidforms. Sakinas extraordinary. She makeseveryone around her better.

Boakye, who will be the first in herfamily to attend college, intends to pursuereligious studies at Dartmouth, butenvisions herself with a law degreesomeday. Winning Outstanding Attorneyat the district and regional competitions ofOhio Mock Trial has given her greaterappreciation for the skills needed tobecome a successful lawyer. It taught mehow to word my arguments, she says.And be persuasive.

She views public speaking as hergreatest achievement, especially in MockTrial and the Poetry Out Loud program.

We read and interpret poetry, then arejudged on our performance, she explainsand adds with a laugh, I can now use allthat English I had to learn.

SOCCER, THE STAGE ANDSINGING (TO BEGIN WITH) On opening night of the St. Francis DeSalesHigh School production of Cinderella,things were going well for Eric Niehaus,who had a starring role as Prince Charming.Despite a bad case of jitters, he hit hismarks, emoted like a pro and reached thathigh note with grace and power.

But nerves are a tricky thing. They canmake you skip aheador backin time. Iwalked backstage and started changingclothes, Niehaus recalls with a shrug.Someone realized his mistake and

questioned him. By then Im in myunderwear, he says, his face flushing evennow at the thought. And I should bedancing with Cinderella in the big ballroomscene. I grab the jacket and goofy pantsthrow them onand go out, with no shoes,do the scene. Frosty looks from Cinderella,

silence from the cast when the curtaindrops. Nevertheless, Niehaus won BestActor for the production.

Recover and move on. He took thesame approach with grades, after what heterms disappointing freshman andsophomore years. You grow and mature,Niehaus, 18, muses. Suddenly I realized Idbetter make some changes if I wanted to goto a great college. Tied for fourth in hisclass, hes an honor roll student andNational Honor Society member, a winnerof the 2011 Wendys High School HeismanAward for Academics, Athletics andLeadership. He also was his schoolsnominee for the U.S. Presidential ScholarsAward. Nice comeback, huh? Hes hoping

to attend the University of Virginia, NotreDame or Wake Forest, double majoring inEnglish and marketing.

What college admissions officers aremost likely to be impressed by, however, isthe range and depth of his extracurriculars.His talent and leadership span twodistinctly different crowds: the Gleekschorus, an a cappella group called theReverbs, drama cluband the soccer jocks.Hes been captain and a four-year memberof the team.

From quiet artsy types to the alphamales who take charge of a room, I seemedto have earned their respect, Niehausnotes. Part of that, he admits, is the respecthe affords others. Hes unfailingly polite andleads by example: Like in soccerId workhard, be first back to the line when wed runsuicides.

His parents have something to do withthat, Niehaus suggests. Robert, his dad, apurchasing manager at Abbott Labs, has afavorite saying, Dont tell me, show me.Works great for grades and cleaning yourroom. And his mom, Joan, a coordinator atCaretenders, a home health agency, hastaught him the value of volunteering.

Niehaus has accrued more than 375 hours of community service. On aweeklong mission trip with his church toCranks Creek, Kentucky, a flood-ravagedpocket of Harlan County, Niehaus says hiseyes were opened to overwhelmingpoverty. Ive volunteered in my owncommunity, but theyre well-off comparedto this man and woman, Niehaus says.We built an extra room for them, installeda window. They were so poor, helpless. Hepauses. I truly believe I am my brotherskeeper.

FROM RUSSIA TO THE BALLROOM You get 90 seconds. Thats it. Anexcruciatingly brief slice of time toshowcase months of hard work, with 11 other couples snapping, slinking,shimmying and swiveling hips on the same dance floor as you execute your best cha-cha. Switch to the samba and repeat.

The Ohio Star Ball, held at the GreaterColumbus Convention Center eachNovember, is recognized as one of thelargest ballroom competitions in the world.Anastasia Maria Gordeeva, 19, hascompeted three times in Latin ballroomthe cha-cha, samba, rumba, paso doble andjive. Although the Reynoldsburg HighSchool senior has yet to win or place, sherelishes the experience.

You grow and learn from competition,says Gordeeva, who has placed first insmaller contests. The whole week before,

you go through the routines in your head.Its about muscle memory. The judges juststare with their clipboards. You have tosmile, not be tense, not bump intoanyone.

Gordeeva discovered dance relativelylate, at 13. Her mom, Olga, says it was allabout the dress. Anastasia saw a red dressI had designed and her eyes got large likesaucers, the professional seamstress andcostume designer remembers. Gordeevascoach and mentor, four-time U.S. nationalballroom champion Bill Sparks, claims itbegan when she watched a young frienddance at the studio: Anastasia was a bittomboyish and thought it was not herthing, but her ability was apparent fromthe start.

The 4.0 valedictorian, who moved herefrom St. Petersburg, Russia, with her momand brother in 1999, checks in at her highschool campus for orchestra practiceshes a violinist. Then she travels to OSUfor macroeconomics, political science andthe like; shes amassed 35 college credithours.

She also works two jobs. At PaneraBread, shes behind the counter serving uplattes and smoothies. At the YouthBallroom Dancesport Academy, whereshe trains with Sparks, Gordeeva instructsyoungsters in the finer points of ballroomdance: rhythm, foot placement andattitude.

Make sure you get that full range ofmotion, she implores. Three small girlsand a boy face the mirror, hands on hips,right feet perfectly pointed. The littleblonde in the sparkly silver skirt brieflyslumps. Stay tall! Gordeeva says firmly,then, smiling, continues. Two, three, fourand one, cha-cha-cha!

Gordeeva readied six pairs, ages 6 to13, for the Arnold Youth DanceSportClassic, held in early March. Most gotfirst place! she exclaims, beaming. Butthe preparations were grueling. At thesame time, the three-time Arnold Classicdance competitor and her partner, DuyPhan, were polishing their own routines.For the competition, Gordeeva wentheavy on the tanning mousse and slippedinto a sizzling black and silversequined dress designedby her mom.

Her plans to study internationalbusiness at OSU in the fall have beenshelved for a teaching and trainingopportunity at a large dance studio inWisconsin. Going professional opensmany doors in dance, Gordeeva says.

With this job, explains Sparks, Shegains business skills, improves as a teacherand, most importantly, as a competitor.

He smiles, blue eyes twinkling. Shecould be a champion.

RESEARCH AND RECYCLINGReading Sachin Rudrarajus rsum (three-and-a-half pages, single-spaced) requires adictionary and a strong dose of self-esteem.His research descriptions get technical,fast. Most adults will never come close tomatching the breadth of his communityserviceit spans the globeor accumulate afraction of his awards, achievements andscholarships. Really, what were you doingat 17?

To understand, in part, Rudrarajuswork ethic, you have to begin with his

parents. They came from rural southeastIndia and moved here when he was a tot,partly because he had been diagnosed withhemophilia and needed better care. Hisdad, Bhaskara, the first in his family toobtain higher education, is a softwarearchitect at Nationwide Insurance. Padma,his mom, is a night-shift nurse atNationwide Childrens Hospital. Theyplace a tremendous value on education.

Rudraraju is the first to tell you hevalues it, too. This TechColumbus 2011High School Student of the Year andNational Merit Finalist has taken 15 APclassesheavy on the math and scienceand six OSU courses. Hes currentlyworking with Dr. Mahmood Khan inOSUs Heart & Lung Research Institute,researching stem cell-based therapy forcardiomyoplasty.

When Rudraraju was just 14, he signedon for research as a student volunteer atNationwide Childrens Hospital. Dr. PeterWhite, director of the BiomedicalGenomics Core at the NCH ResearchInstitute, was so impressed with his abilityhe brought him back as a full-time researchaide the next two summers. We werecomparing liver and muscle tissue samplesof runt piglets with normal ones,Rudraraju explains. We found that therunts developed more disordersobesity,heart disease.

His AP chemistry teacher at OlentangyLiberty High School, Liz Golowenski,witnessed a transformationfrom studentto scientistduring that time. Suddenly,being a doctor was a missionhe hadfound his goal, she says. Rudraraju wants

to focus on neuroscience and the brain, andhe hopes to attend Northwestern orCornell in the fall.

Helping others is part of his mission,too. In 2007, Rudrarajus concern for thevast amount of e-waste led him to start theCommunity Recycling Campaign, now anonprofit. Hes collected and recycledmore than 50,000 pounds of electronics,refurbishing many of the computershimself and donating them to the needy.He founded an Adopt-a-School programfor 20 schools in India to promoterecycling awarenessand raised nearly$6,000 to set up information centers andrun the recycling efforts.

As a winner of the EPA-PresidentsEnvironmental Youth Award for hisrecycling programs, Rudraraju recentlyreceived an invitation to a summit at theWhite House. But hell be in Atlanta at thattime on an all-expenses-paid trip for Coca-Cola scholarship winners.

Twice, Rudraraju has been a finalist atthe International Intel Science andEngineering Fair. He found time to attendlast years event in Los Angeles. Therewere about 1,500 students, he recalls.They closed Universal Studios just for us!

His summer is full: finishing a combatrobot hes building for fun, representingOhio at a five-week session of the NationalYouth Science Camp and taking a month-long family trip to India. Its been sixyears, Rudraraju says. Were excited to go back.

RUNNER, MUSICIAN, MATH WHIZ Long before last falls cross countryseason, Sophie Chatas met with her coachto figure out how to get from here tothere. The doe-eyed, slender brunettewanted to transform herself from a strongrunner to a great one. Chatas was hungryfor one last trip to the state meet, afterfinishing back in the pack107ththeprevious year.

Her drive was most impressive, saysLori Baldwin, head cross country coach atColumbus School for Girls. Chatas begantraining daily, even though she was still inthe middle of a successful track season,one that would see an 11th-place finish atthe state competition in the 1,600-meterrun. She trained through the summer.Even changed her form: We worked onher foot strike, got her arms relaxed,

recalls Baldwin. Forgoing soccer, Chatastrained aggressively deep into crosscountry season, sacrificing strongshowings in her early races.

Sophie was committed, says Baldwin.She went out fast that November

morning at the 2011 state championship.But with 200 meters left, I was in 30thplace, Chatas recalls. I dug down. I beganpassing peoplewhat a feeling! Shewound up 13th: a school record, a personalbest and an All-Ohio designation (given tostate meet qualifiers with a 3.5 GPA orbetter).

Determination like this is hard-wiredinto Chatas. The 18-year-old daughter ofGeoff and Katie Chatashes OSUs chieffinancial officer, shes an ardentcommunity volunteeris not just a giftedathlete. An honor student and NationalMerit Finalist, Chatas has garnered awardsfor exceptional scores on the NationalLatin Exam and, as CSGs top mathstudent her junior year, received theHonda-OSU Math Medal. Shes internedwith OSUs Reading Recovery Program,helping youngsters read. A staff memberof the school newspaper and studentcouncil president, shes a visible leaderwith what she admits is infectious schoolspirit.

Shes musical, too. A French hornplayer, Chatas has been a member of theYouth Philharmonic of Central Ohio forfour years. In her final performance withthem, shes happy to see StravinskysFirebird Suite on the program, which, shesays, has a great horn part.

Digging in when things get tough,however, doesnt apply just to her running.Math mayve been easy in the beginning,Chatas confesses, but I really have to workin BC Calculus this year. Its an AP class,and its a challenge. Her AP success rate,however, is high. An AP Scholar withDistinction, she earned a 5 (the top score)on each of the five AP tests shes taken in arange of subjects, from biology tocomparative government.

After a trip to London with her familythis summer for the Olympicstheyve gottickets for beach volleyball, diving andtrack eventsand Greece to connect withdistant relatives, Chatas will attendWilliams College in Massachusetts. TheDivision III school has recruited her fortrack and cross country. Chatas hasntcommitted to either yet. Or a major.

But witnessing Olympic track stars incompetitionthat might spark a wholenew round of Chatas determination.
