With the ER+ project now complete, the JCH Foundation would like to

thank all donors for their support of the hospital’s plans in meeting an

urgent need in this community.

Generous donations from local residents, businesses and hospital

employees, coupled with funds raised through many thoughtful memorials,

made a huge impact. These donations were combined with earnings from

the JCH Resale Shop, the JCH Gift Shop and a large donation from the

JCH Auxiliary, to bring in over $600,000 to the JCH Foundation for the

project. What a terrific statement of support from the community for

the needed expansion! Your donations are greatly appreciated and will

benefit the community for many years to come.

We would like to extend a special “thank you” to: • Paul and Alvina Isringhausen’s designation of the JCH Foundation

and its ER+ expansion project, not once but twice, when awarded the

Monsanto Fund’s Award for area farmers. Their donations together

totaled $5,000!

• Jerseyville’s annual S.O.D.A. Run for contributing two years with

donations totaling $6,000 to the campaign fund.

ER+ Capital Campaign Final Tally at $600,000!

Stellar Turnout at ER+ Open House Makes for Amazing Tribute to Entire Fundraising Campaign By Larry Bear, JCH CEO

A true cause for celebration, roughly 700 people including

staff, donors and community members came out in force

for an impressive peek at the new JCH ER+.

In honor of the new ER+, JCH hosted a two-day community-

wide event on June 27 and 28, 2012, complete with

guided tours, food, free gifts and lots to cheer about. On

Wednesday, a breakfast was held for staff with lovely fruit

and pastries to kick off the day. Festivities continued with

an appetizer reception to honor all donors in the evening

followed by the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon. To wrap

up the night, there was an Open House for members of the

Jersey County Business Association.

Nearly 300 people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony,

while 200 employees and another 200 community members

braved the disagreeable heat to participate in the public

Open House festivities on Thursday. The reviews were

unanimous: “It’s huge, it’s functional, it’s bright, and best

of all, it’s right here at home!” This stellar turnout was an

amazing tribute to the entire campaign. Exciting highlights

of the Grand Opening event included the presentation of

a half million dollar check from the JCH Foundation in

addition to a generous $2,500 check presentation from the

Spring Organ/Tissue Donor Awareness Fundraising Run.

We knew the unveiling was going to be awesome, but I

think all were surprised when the barrier between the new

and the remodeled area came down. The nurses’ station is

beautiful. One eight-year-old visitor said the countertops

“were pretty and looked like they had been sprinkled

with pepper.” The well-lit work area is accented by bright

yellow walls with shining tile floors accented in navy blue.

The finishing touches are complete and the new ER+ has

already made a huge impact on the quality of patient care.

We have reached 91% patient satisfaction since the new

unit has opened, and we are striving for 100%!

I would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to everyone

who made this ER+ project possible and the Grand Opening

event such a huge success. Several of the attendees

were rather sophisticated in their understanding of the

healthcare drama that’s been evolving over time in the

United States. It was a great experience to get to meet so

many of our supporters.2 JCH

Read all about it! Don’t miss your chance to get exciting recipes and discover new fall

flavors to savor. The Jersey Community Hospital Auxiliary is excited about the arrival

of its new cookbook, which features 750 recipes gathered from hospital employees,

volunteers, physicians, board members and retired JCH employees.

As the second edition compiled by the Auxiliary and the 5th hospital cookbook to be

printed, this captivating new read is currently for sale in the JCH Gift Shop for $15.

The cookbook project was undertaken as a means of completing the Auxiliary pledge

of $100,000 to the ER+ expansion project.

Enticing the eye and the palate, the cookbook features a colorful sketch of our newly

expanded Gift Shop on the front cover and a picture of the enlarged Emergency

Department on the back. Besides so many great recipes, the book also features some

hospital history along with a section of cooking and nutritional tips.

We would like to extend a very sincere “thank you” to the cookbook committee

which consisted of Dinah Breitweiser, Peggy Fessler and Wanda St. Peters. We hope

everyone enjoys the many wonderful recipes and seeing all the names of their friends

and co-workers in this book. In addition, we’d like to thank Raechel Jones for the

beautiful cover illustration.

From Pro/Minor League Team Physician to Jersey Community Hospital MVPDr. Thomas Bilko is a Standout Addition Jersey Community Hospital is proud to have Dr. Bilko on its roster. He

recently relocated to the area and became a new physician resource

for JCH, Illini Medical Associates and JCH Wellness Center. Dr. Bilko

has added his skilled expertise in general orthopedics and sports

medicine to the comprehensive, integrated spectrum of specialized

healthcare services for which JCH is known.

Dr. Bilko boasts an exceptional list of credentials and is currently

available to help new patients. He maintains office hours at the

Jerseyville clinic Monday through Friday and performs orthopedic

surgery at JCH. Special areas of interest for Dr. Bilko include

advanced arthroscopy, total joint replacement, fracture repair and

sports medicine.

“In his brief time at Jersey, I’ve found Dr. Bilko to be pleasant and

caring with his patients and the staff,” says JCH OR Manager

Dorothy Talley, RN. “The ability to perform arthroscopic procedures

and total joint replacements

is a great accomplishment for

JCH. Patients will gain a big

benefit by being able to have

surgery locally.”

“Dr. Bilko is very involved with his

patients’ care,” explains Melody

Watson, Director of Physical

Therapy for Schwegel Physical Therapy at JCH. “He takes time to

listen to patients and stops by to check on their progress firsthand.”

“I’m thrilled to be able to bring the much needed specialty of sports

medicine orthopedics to our local community,” Dr. Bilko explains.

“Hopefully, my addition to the staff at JCH will fill a void and enable

our residents to have more complete, more immediate healthcare

options right here at home.”

Dr. J. Daniels Lamping, OB/GYN

Experienced, Dedicated OB/GYN Plays Integral Role in Providing Exceptional Women’s Healthcare at JCHEncouraging and coaching new moms throughout their pregnancies… getting to experience the joy on a family’s face after he’s delivered a new baby… and helping women make informed choices about their health are all reasons Dr. Daniel Lamping decided to go into medicine. And, since coming to Jerseyville a year ago, it’s what keeps this physician of over 30 years loving his job every day.

Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Lamping of Illini Medical Associates has put his years of experience to good use since beginning to see patients last year. His approach to gynecological care stresses prevention and emphasizes minimally invasive surgical procedures. He specializes in obstetrics, nutrition, contraception and hormone replacement therapy. “Dr. Lamping shows true compassion for his patients and takes time to make sure the patient understands the procedure,” said Dorothy Talley, RN, and OR Manager at JCH.

He performs sterilization procedures through the use of a hysterscope, which requires no incision and less healing time.”

“I am very excited to be involved with the JCH women’s health team,” said Dr. Lamping. “They are committed to improving obstetrical/gynecological services for the women of Jersey and surrounding counties.”

Dr. Lamping maintains an office in both the Jerseyville and Carlinville clinics and has privileges at JCH. He is accepting new patients. You can find his complete bio at jch.org.

JCH 5

This summer, the JCH ER welcomed a new addition to its ranks –

the Omnicell® automated dispensing cabinet (ADC). What does

that mean for patients? Simple, faster medication delivery and

increased patient safety.

The JCH Omnicell ADC, which looks a little like a fancy vending

machine, is equipped with fingerprint identification and 2D

barcode scanning that act as safety checks on medications

during the dispense, return and restock processes.

“With over 800 medications currently in the Omnicell, this

system helps our staff get the right medication to our patients

on time and in the most efficient manner,” says JCH Head

Pharmacist Susan Guntren. “The innovative bar code verification

feature also increases our overall security as we can easily track

and monitor when medications are taken out and restocked.”

According to Guntren, about 62% of hospitals the size of JCH

use ADCs as their primary distribution method for medications.

Of those, only 38% use the bar coding feature when restocking.

JCH started using the bar code verification feature right

away, however, which will simplify the change in procedures

in November, when the bar-coded medication administration

system is implemented. “In administering medication via the

bar code system, we can make sure patients are receiving the

correct medications and dosages while simultaneously meeting

the ever-changing compliance and safe practice regulations,”

said Larry Bear, CEO of Jersey Community Hospital. “We want

our patients to know we’re not just throwing medication at

them and that there are processes in place to ensure there are

no unnecessary reactions.”

JCH was one of the first hospitals in Illinois to be certified

for “Meaningful Use” by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid

Services (CMS) and is well on the way to the second tier of this

computerized medical record designation. In addition to ADCs

and its bar-coded medication administration system, JCH has

also:

• switched to computerized physician order entry – 100% of all

orders are now submitted this way

• implemented the use of smart pumps with over 46 medications

currently programmed

• added a new unit dose bar code packaging system

• installed automated temperature monitoring systems in

departments that are only open during the day so medications

can be monitored centrally

These improvements are a direct result of talented clinical

managers, dedicated physicians, and a commitment from the

organization’s leaders to maximum patient safety and efficiency.

For any questions concerning prescribed medications, please

First Annual Jersey Junior Triathlon We proudly celebrated a healthy new tradition! On Saturday, August 18th, 68 local

kids geared up at Dolan Park in Jerseyville and participated in the first annual Jersey

Junior Triathlon. The event was sponsored by the JCH Wellness Center and the

Jerseyville Parks and Recreation department. Participants ages 5 to 8 competed in a

25-yard swim in the Donor Pool, a one-mile bike ride and a half-mile run. Participants

ages 9 to 12 competed in a 75-yard swim, a two-mile bike ride and a one-mile run.

The day’s festivities were all about fun and fitness with all finishers receiving an

awards medal and an event t-shirt. Many participants were local, but we had kids

travel as far as Elsah, Godfrey, Alton, Edwardsville and even Indiana to participate

since youth triathlons are a bit of a rarity.

The event was a huge success! It was great to see so many young people being so

active, plus the tremendous parental support. Mark your calendars for next year.

We’ll be sure to do it again!

Heart and Sole 5K On Saturday, September 22, over 50 runners, 30

walkers and 10 kids participated in the 11th Annual

Heart & Sole 5K Run and 2 Mile Fun Walk at the

JCH Wellness Center in Jerseyville, IL. Top female

winner and winner overall was Kayla Brown with a

time of 18:11. Top Male Runner was Steve Meredith

with a time of 20:45. Age 18 and under winners

were: Andrew Bertman and Terri Wendle. Age 30-39 winners were: Craig

Hudson and Renee White. Age 40-49 winners were: Keith Baecht and Lisa

Merry Christmas, Happy New RearDecember will kick off “Merry Fitness & Happy New Rear,” a weight maintenance

program during the holidays. The holiday season can be so busy that sometimes we

forget about ourselves, and our health is put last on our priority list. It’s important

to find time to exercise and to make smart food choices. Everyone who participates

will weigh in weekly (Wed - Fri). Your progress will be posted! Your name will be on

a reindeer behind Santa’s sleigh. Your goal is to keep your reindeer in line with the

sleigh. If you gain, your reindeer will go up. If you lose, your reindeer will go down.

Everyone who loses or maintains their weight during the program will be entered

into a drawing for a 30-minute massage. Cost $1. JCH 7

2012 Golf Tournament Raised $15,000 for JCH FoundationGolfers enjoyed a picture perfect day, a delicious barbeque lunch and the well-manicured Lockhaven Country Club

grounds as they joined forces for the JCH Foundation’s Golf Tournament and Dinner Auction on Friday, June 8th. The

tournament and auction raised an impressive $15,000 for the JCH Foundation’s Medical Education Scholarship program.

First place went to the Kane Fire Prevention team of Pat Kane, Shane Smith, Shane Callahan and John Bradswell. Second

place was earned by the Jerseyville Carpet and Furniture Galleries team of Jerrod Capps, Dan Capps, Greg Church and Pete

Noble. Because it was the “Lucky 13th” annual golf tournament, a poker run was added as an optional feature. What a hit

it was! Danny Phipps brought home the winning hand while the Super Seniors team of Gary Whyte, Don Lybarger, Jerry

Williams and Gary Rutz masterfully won the skins contest. In total, 120 golfers participated.

An additional 75 dinner guests joined the evening’s

festivities that included a cocktail party and silent

auction. These guests arrived by trolley (sponsored

by Hardin Financial), eager to share stories of

their adventure and to join in the fun. Awards

were given out, contest winners were announced,

dinner was enjoyed and Dave Loy made the Live

Auction an entertaining event for everyone.

Thank you to all who participated in our 2012 event. We are especially grateful to our sponsors for their continued support of the Medical Education Scholarship program.

Thanks for 34 Years of Memories, Doc!On June 3, 1978, Jersey Community Hospital was

blessed with a new Orthopedic Surgeon. His name

was Dr. Arturo Joson. No one knew at that time

that 34 years later we would be celebrating his

retirement. This young physician started out at the

University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines

where he received his doctorate degree. He then

went on to Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, New

York to complete his internship, followed by his

residency at the Kings County Hospital Center also in

Brooklyn. He worked at several area hospitals in

St. Louis before coming to JCH in 1978.

Dorothy Talley, RN, and OR Director

stated, “He will be greatly missed and

he always maintains a high level of

professionalism with everyone.” We

wish Dr. Joson the best of luck in his

retirement and thank him for the many

years of services he gave to JCH and

the surrounding communities.
