Lab:Becausetheskillsusedintheopenwaterdivesarefirsttaughtandpracticedinthepool,amissedlabsectionmaymeanthatastudentisunabletoparticipateinacheck‐outdive.MissedlabsectionsmaybemadeuponaTuesdaynightatthediscretionoftheinstructor.

Check‐outdives:Inordertoearncertificationstudentsmustcompleteallofthescheduledcheck‐outdives.Amissedcheck‐outdivemaybemadeupatthediscretionoftheinstructorforanadditionalfee.

PrerequisitetoParticipationinUFScientificDivingStudentsmustholdAdvancedOpenWater,Rescue,andNitroxcertificationfromarecognizedcertificationagency.StudentscurrentlyenrolledintheAdvancedOpenWaterSCUBAcoursemayenrollintheUFScientificDivingSCUBAcoursesimultaneously.Studentsmustbringacopyoftheircertificationcard(s)(bothfrontandback)tothefirstclassforinclusionintheirstudentrecordsfolder.StudentsmustbringtheirSCUBAlogbooksforreviewofrecentdivingactivity.StudentsmustalsohaveanAAUSclearedScubaMedicalexamination.SkillsEvaluationThefirstlabsessionwillconsistofaswimevaluation,asrequiredfortheScientificDiverrating,andcompletionofamedicalhistoryquestionnaire.StudentsmustsuccessfullycompletetheswimevaluationandnothaveanymedicalcontraindicationstoparticipationinSCUBAactivitiesinordertocontinueinthecourse.Theswimevaluationconsistsofthefollowing:

Swim400yards.StudentsseekingScientificDiverstatusmustcompletethe400yardswiminunder12minutes.

25yardunderwaterswiminonebreath. Towanotherswimmer25yards. Treadwaterfor10minuteswiththelasttwominuteskeepinghandsoutof

water.

OneofthefirstlabsessionswillconsistofabasicSCUBAskillsevaluationtoverifybasicSCUBAcompetency.ThebasicSCUBAskillsevaluationconsistsofthefollowing:

CorrectlyassembleSCUBAequipment. Giantstrideentryintothewaterandestablishmentofneutralbuoyancy. Floodingandremovalandreplacementofmask. Removal,recovery,andclearingoftheprimarysecondstageregulator.

RemovalandreplacementoftheSCUBAunitwhileunderwater(doff‐n‐don). AlternateAirSharewithascent. BuddyBreathing(willbetaught). Neutralbuoyancy. Properexitfromthewaterandbreak‐downofSCUBAequipment.

OnthefirstopenwatercheckoutdiveaSCUBAcompetencyevaluationwilltakeplace.Thecompetencyevaluationconsistsofthefollowing:

SCUBAKnowledgeEvaluationStudentswillbeassignedthestandardNAUIOpenWaterDiverExaminationthrougheLearninginordertoassesstheirlevelofbasicSCUBAknowledge.Asdifferenttrainingagencieshavedifferentstandards,thesolepurposeoftheassignmentistogaugethedepthofstudentknowledge.Theevaluationwillbescoredaseither“complete”or“incomplete.”Completemeansthestudenthasfinishedthetesttothebestoftheirability,andthatisworth100pointstowardstheirfinalgrade.Incompletemeansthestudentdidnotcompletetheexam,andwillmissouton100pointsfromtheirfinalgrade.Failuretocompletetheexamwillalsoresultinaonepointdeductionfromtheclassroomparticipationgrade.FAILURETOCOMPLETETHEPRE‐ASSESSMENTEXAMMEANSTHEHIGHESTGRADEYOUCANACHIEVEINTHISCOURSEISAB+.
