DAVE EMSLIE
A challenge we face in EP Cricket is ensuring that the good work done by the various components of EP Cricket is known within the public
domain. We so often find ourselves so focused on completing the programmes that we spend too little time making them public.
The reason why we want to make our programmes and successes public is not to brag or show how good we are (because indeed we have
imperfections), but to share with those within EP Cricket the happiness and joy of successfully completed cricket programmes, of which we have
many.
One of the many money can’t buy benefits of working in cricket development is to see the sense of satisfaction and unbridled joy displayed by
those who participate in our programmes. This makes all the effort worthwhile. EP Cricket is committed to developing cricket in our region so
as to ensure that the game is accessible to all and we become a nation of winners.
This edition of Cover to Cover reflects many of our programmes and we are most grateful to the many volunteers, together with full time staff,
who so unselfishly make it happen.

MESSAGE FROM GRAEME SAULS PRESIDENT OF EASTERN PROVINCE CRICKETWe are fast approaching the end of a season that has flown by and has had many challenges I can assure you. When I occupied this seat in October last year, I was under no illusions of the task at hand but I was astounded at the magnitude of the challenge we face and even though we are making inroads, there is much, much work that still lies ahead. The precarious financial position of EP Cricket is still a major concern and the single biggest stumbling block to us achieving all our objectives. I want to focus on some of the challenges that need to remain key focus items for the board and everyone who are involved and follow the game in this region:• Women’sCricket-Itisimperativethattheproblemsofwomen’scricketberesolvedandour ladies start playing club cricket on a regular basis. • JuniorCricket-AkeypartoftheCSAPresidentialplanistoensurethatourcricketpipelineis protected.Juniorcricketisapersonalhighpriorityitemformeandwhilstitisdisappointingthatwewillonlycommencewith fixtures now, I can assure you that the juniors will play cricket on a regular basis from next season.• Uplif tingourclubs-Thisseason4ofourSuperleagueclubswillberelegatedanditisimperativethatweembarkonthemuch needed process of putting in place a sustainable program that will improve the standard of cricket in our northern and township areas. A key element of transformation is about providing equal opportunities and this process will include addressing our shortcomings with regards to coaching, equipment and facilities. More information on this will be forwarded to clubs over the next few weeks.
On a more positive note, both the Warriors and our EP Amateur side has had relatively good seasons and it is a reflection of the type of cricketerswecanandmustdeliverfromthisregion.IhadtheopportunitytowatchourUnder13andUnder17provincialsidesatthetournaments in Paarl and Cape Town respectively and I was extremely pleased at the showing of our boys. Both sides gave a very good account of themselves and there were some really outstanding performances which was further proof of the talent in this region. I have no doubt we will see some of these players announce themselves on the bigger stages in the not too distant future.

Zonal Fixtures Zonal fixtures are currently under way in the Zwide area and of significant importance is that the club in that area is assisting with scoring and umpiring, etc. District cricket Inthe4districts(AlbanyAloes,WesternWarriors,EasternEaglesandNorthernKnights)4agegroupsquadspracticedthroughoutthe winter. These training sessions were not attended well as sessions clashed with the busy school winter sport’s programme, however, this didn’t stop the coaches from getting on with their business. It allowed for more one-to-one coaching and thusproviding the coach more opportunity to focus quality time with individual players.
Looking at the coach`s lesson plans, most of the focus was on technique at this level which assisted the provincial coaches as they are not able to get stuck into technique changes close to the National Weeks.
DistrictFestivalswereplayedinFebruary/MarchandSeptember/October which served part of the selection process for the provincial teams. This allowed for the coaches and selectors to see the players at the beginning of the year, watch, or play a role in their progress, and assess at a later stage. This new process can only benefit both parties concerned going forward. It also provided moreplayers, especiallytheoutoftowncricketers(Grahamstown)with more exposure to the coaches and selectors.
Winter SquadVarious Winter Squads were selected after the first DistrictFestival. Coaching was conducted on a monthly basis to ensure that the cricketers are exposed to a higher level of coaching. Coaches focused on the mental aspects of the game during their sessions, for example decision making, game plans, tactical awareness and mental toughness. A high emphasis is also placed on players fitness levels and ensuring that all our players meet the minimum fitness requirements set outbyCSA.
CoachesalsovisitGrahamstowntoconductcoachingsessionthere with the top players in the region. This ensures that the GHT boys also receive winter coaching without havingto commute to PE each time and it also allows coaches to familiarizethemselveswiththeseboys.
Holiday clinicsTheu/11-u/18WinterSquadplayerswereinvitedtotheHolidayClinicswhichwereheldintheJune/Julyholidays.Theywereexposed to various skills (batting, bowling and fielding) and class room discussions were conducted every morning at the clinics. This gave us, as coaches, a clear insight into the cricketingmindsofourplayersandwesoonrealizedthatourcricketers are lacking cricket knowledge. We therefore appeal to all coaches (schools, clubs, academy etc) to have regular discussions before and after matches with players.
The main aim of holiday clinics is to “receive” information from the players, rather than the coach “telling” them all the time.
Representative squad activitiesThe Eastern Province Youth Representative teams participated in the various National Weeks during December 2012. Theresults for the EP teams at the tournaments are as follows:
