Based in Bordon, Hampshire Fern-Howard was formed in 1972 as a supplier of electrical assemblies to the lighting industry. Since then we have become a market leading manufacturer of energy efficient lighting, originally based on the 2D low energy lamp.

TIME-IN-A-BOX is Fern-Howard’s unique packaging method, which presents component parts to the installer in exactly the order required. All parts are kept safely in the box - in protective wrappings to avoid breakages - until required, an added advantage if there is a prolonged period between first and second fix.

That is until Fern-Howard designed and developed a unique ‘Wire-Less”, one piece High Frequency electronic gear tray to suit the majority of the Fern-Howard 2D ranges.This development has produced a high quality, High Frequency electronic controlled range of lighting products, that with vastly reduced manufacturing assembly costs, are now available at the same price as the outdated HPF switch start products that they are replacing.

It has long been accepted that any new fluorescent lighting installation

would, and should benefit from the advantages of being

controlled by High Frequency electronic gear.Those benefits of increased circuit efficacy and general lamp efficiency far outweigh-ing the small percentage increase in purchase cost of such control gear over

traditional, wire wound, switch start technology.

The High Frequency BenefitsA 28W 2D switch start circuit would commonly consume 36W, whereas the new Fern-Howard unit only consumes 24W. These energy savings, and subsequent cost to the environment, are further enhanced by the increased lamp life experienced when a 2D lamp is controlled by High Frequency Electronic gear instead of conventional wire wound gear. Dependent on the switching cycle(s), an additional 15% lamp life can be gained thus further reducing the overall running and maintenance costs of the installation.

Lamp Failure ProtectionThe new Fern-Howard unit also includes a Lamp Failure Protection mode. When a lamp fails in a traditional switch start luminaire, the circuit will continue to attempt to strike the lamp causing the characteristic ‘flashing’ of the lamp and eventual ‘glowing’ cathodes. If the failed lamp is not replaced this situation commonly leads to the ballast overheating and failing. The Lamp Failure Protection mode detects a failed lamp and will not continue to attempt to strike the lamp. Thus avoiding unsightly and annoying ‘flashing’, as well as protecting the circuitry of the fitting. Whenever lamps are changed, the fitting simply needs to have its power supply isolated whilst carrying out the relamp operation.

The Self-Testing Emergency Module automatically tests

• For 5 minutes duration monthly • Battery present and in circuit• For 1 hour duration 6 monthly • Operation of battery charger• For 3 hours duration annually • Operation of emergency lamps• Mains present and connected • Operation of emergency circuit & module

The Fern-Howard Auto Test System routinely tests all the fundamental aspects of the luminaire, and reports the status through the LED. The unit complies with the draft CELMA specification for Emergency Lighting Testing systems and exceeds its testing requirements.

The Auto Test System goes into self test mode automatically at a suitable time, the test schedule commences within a period of 37 days of commissioning. This is programmed into the modules during manufacture to ensure that no more than 15% of luminaires in an installation are on test in any one day. After this period, tests will be carried out on a 30 day time frame as required, at a period of low risk, normally when the switched supply is off. If a period of low risk does not arise within 7 days of the required test then the test will be carried out immediately. A longer duration test will be carried out every 6th and 12th test.

Three durations of test are provided. Monthly the unit is activated for 5 minutes and the output to the lamp tested at the start and finish; 6 monthly the test will be conducted for 1 hour, and annually the test will be conducted for the full duration of 3 hours.

AUDIBLE ALARM

An audible alarm will sound should a fault condition be found during a test. The alarm will sound for 3 seconds every 35 minutes until the fault condition is rectified and the unit reset.

USER RESET FACILITY

To reset the LED after the fault condition has been rectified, the user simply switches the switched or unswitched supply ON/OFF twice within 10 seconds, either external to or within the luminaire.

Auto test luminaires should be left powered off until the installation is finally commissioned.

The FOTINI is designed to fit into a minimum void depth of only 150mm making it an extremely versatile luminaire. Inserted through a cut out of 205mm Ø it is simply locked into place by pushing down the locking levers from inside the reflector frame.

The Prema-lux Sitemaster is a tough and rugged 5ft corrosion resistant luminaire tailored to suit the demands of the site lighting industry. At the heart of the Sitemaster is a ‘unique’ volt-sensing High Frequency ballast. This caters for the varying voltage and volt drop encountered on long transformer-fed cable runs.A typical 100m cable run of switch start luminaires would normally be able to handle no more than ten fittings. Fifteen Sitemasters could be installed on that same cable run.
