COVIDSafe for Saving Lives LSV COVIDSAFE PLAN | VERSION 1.0 | SEPTEMBER 2020
COVIDSafe Cleaning Guide | General Advice & Instructions | LSV Covidsafe Plan 2
1. Cleaning during the COVID-19 Pandemic COVID-19 spreads through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. A person can acquire the virus by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or eyes.
A key way you can protect workers and others from the risk of exposure to COVID-19 is by implementing appropriate cleaning and disinfecting measures for your workplace.
A combination of cleaning and disinfection will be most effective in removing the COVID-19 virus. For further information, see
2. Responsibilities
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
COVIDSafe Coordinator Overall supervision and adherence to all COVID-19 related policies and protocols.
Club members Ensuring they maintain a safe and clean environment, report any issues and stay up to date with the updated policies and protocols.

3. Routine cleaning
What do I need? Cleaning equipment • General rubbish bags • Detergent, either as a solution that can be
mixed with water, or as wipes; or • A 2-in-1 detergent and disinfectant
solution, or wipes which can be used for routine cleaning
• Disposable or reusable cloths (if not using wipes)
• Mop and bucket (if not using wipes).
PPE • Hand hygiene (see definitions for further
information) • Face covering • Disposable gloves (if only reusable gloves
available, use for routine cleaning only and do not share).
When should I clean? Throughout the activity • Apply PPE. • Clean objects and surfaces used
repeatedly, by multiple people, after each use where practical. For example, printers, handrails, rescue boards.
• Clean surfaces and fittings that are visibly soiled or after any spillage as soon as possible.
• Instruct participants to clean personal property that has been handled. For example, sunglasses, electronics, keys.
At the end of the activity • Hand hygiene (see definitions for further
information) • Apply PPE • Clean the location, focusing on frequently
touched surfaces (e.g. door and cupboard handles, light switches, desks, tabletops, remotes, kitchen and bathroom surfaces and items).
After cleaning Dispose of any disposable cloths in a rubbish bag, or launder reusable cloths (see general considerations for further information on laundering).

4. Decontamination for suspected or confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19)
What you need to know • The actions in this section must be applied after patient treatment of persons suffering
conditions considered infectious with illness likely transmitted via direct contact or droplet transmission.
• This must occur after every above case. • Communicate with any third-party cleaning contractors where decontamination is required. • For further information, contact LSV Club Support (03 9676 6930 or
[email protected]). • Lifesaving Operations: To seek advice in relation to patient treatment, contact LSV Comms
(13 SURF).
Preparing to clean • Prevent access to the areas that were used by the suspected or confirmed case as
well as any common areas (kitchens, bathrooms) and any known or likely touch points (including equipment and surfaces).
• Open outside doors and windows if possible, to increase air circulation.
What do I need?
Cleaning equipment • A detergent, as a solution that can be
mixed with water, and • A disinfectant containing alcohol in a
concentration of ≥70%, chlorine bleach in a concentration of 1000 parts per million (follow manufacturer’s instructions or see the Department of Health website for more information on achieving the correct bleach solution), oxygen bleach, or wipes and sprays that contain quaternary ammonium compound; or
• A combined detergent and disinfectant solution, or wipes. Plus:
• General and biohazard (yellow) rubbish bags
• Disposable cloths (if not using wipes) • Mop and bucket (if not using wipes).
PPE • Hand hygiene (see definitions for further
information) • Face covering (surgical/P2/N95 preferred,
especially if the person suspected to have COVID-19 is in the room)
• Disposable gloves • Safety eyewear • A disposable apron where there is visible
contamination with respiratory secretions or other bodily fluids.
COVIDSafe Cleaning Guide | General Advice & Instructions | LSV Covidsafe Plan 5
The decontamination process • Perform hand hygiene and adopt appropriate PPE. Thoroughly clean and then disinfect:
‒ All areas of suspected or confirmed contamination ‒ All equipment and surfaces which have been in contact with the patient ‒ All surfaces frequently touched during transport and care of the patient ‒ Any common areas (e.g. kitchens, bathrooms), and ‒ Any other known or likely touch points at the location.
• Pay particular attention to high touch areas and work/activity surfaces, the exterior of equipment used, patient assessment equipment, first aid bed, rails, door handles and any other surface used or touched. Reusable patient treatment equipment including
• Allow surfaces to dry. After cleaning • General waste should be placed in a rubbish bag before being disposed of in a normal
waste bin. • Hazardous waste should be placed in a tied biohazard (yellow) bag, or suitable container
before being disposed of in a hazardous waste bin. If unavailable, place hazardous waste in two normal tied rubbish bags with a label (printed or written) placed on the outside indicating it is hazardous waste.
• Wash applicable cleaning equipment, including mop heads, and completely dry before re-use.
• Empty and re-clean equipment such as buckets with a fresh solution of disinfectant/wipes and completely dry before re-use.

6. General considerations • It is important to maintain routine cleaning because dirt and grime can reduce the ability of
disinfectants to kill germs.
• All surfaces and equipment where possible and appropriate should be cleaned at least daily. More frequent cleaning may be required in some circumstances, such as between uses of shared equipment. Use of equipment that cannot easily be cleaned is discouraged.
• Disinfectants require sufficient contact time to be effective at killing viruses. If no time is specified, the disinfectant should be left for ten minutes before removing.
• Launder items according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use the warmest appropriate water setting and dry items completely. Wear disposable gloves when handling dirty laundry from a person who is sick. Dirty laundry from a person who is sick can be washed with other people’s items. Do not shake dirty laundry. Clean and disinfect clothes hampers according to guidance above for surfaces. Remove gloves, and immediately conduct hand hygiene.
• Read the product label and Safety Data Sheet for a cleaning/disinfecting product before using and make sure you follow all instructions, including all required PPE. Also make sure the product is suitable for use on the surface you are cleaning.
• Where cleaning on or around electrical equipment/fittings, isolate electrical equipment and turn off power source if possible before cleaning with liquids.
• Where possible, avoid cleaning methods which may disperse microbes into the air (sweeping products and spray and wipe techniques).
7. Definitions
Clean To physically remove germs (bacteria and viruses), dirt and grime from surfaces using a detergent and water solution. A detergent is a surfactant that is designed to break up oil and grease with the use of water.
Damp dust To wet a cloth with cleaning agent and wring out, such that the cloth remains damp, but does not drip water.
Disinfect To kill germs (bacteria and viruses) on surfaces using a product labelled as household disinfectant, and containing ≥ 70% alcohol, quaternary ammonium compounds, chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach.
Decontamination The process of cleaning and disinfecting, to remove, neutralise or kill bacteria and viruses, from an area, object and/or person.
Hand hygiene The practice of reducing the number of micro-organisms on the hands. It refers to two common forms of hand cleansing: • Hand rub – application of a waterless antimicrobial agent (for example,
alcohol-based hand rub) to the surface of the hands. • Hand wash – use of water and soap or soap solution (whether plain or
antimicrobial), followed by patting dry with single-use towels.
HEPA High Efficiency Particulate Air filter
COVIDSafe Cleaning Guide | General Advice & Instructions | LSV Covidsafe Plan 17
High touch A surface that is touched often, by the same or different people. For example, a door handle.
Low touch A surface that is touched less than a frequently touched surface. For example, the surface of a cupboard door.
PPE Personal Protective Equipment – for more information, see link.
Routine cleaning To maintain the cleaning process on a consistent basis, to reduce build-up of dirt and grime. In the context of coronavirus (COVID-19), at least daily.
