The City of Covington enjoys a vibrant sense of community. It is a place where local government, private citizens and

businesses are partners, working together to provide innovative solutions for the challenges facing the city as it grows.

The city council believes that you can live and work in the same community, while keeping a rural feel with economic vitality. Since Covington’s incorporation on August 31, 1997, the city has grown so rapidly from 12,500 to 17,760 today.

Covington is developing as a new center for commerce. It is a great place for jobs and businesses along with residential property opportunities including a wide range of single family housing from aff ordable to luxury.

While the council encourages economic development, it also believes that the participation of social service programs at a local level are the true soul of the city, recognizing that quality of life is a necessity rather than an unattainable goal. They place a high signifi cance on developing strong partnerships with the Covington Chamber of Commerce, Kent School District and local service clubs as well as individual community volunteers.

Mayor Margaret Harto says, “Lots of things are going right in Covington. We’ve been very busy planning a downtown that will give families a place to live, work, play and shop. We’ve been busy developing our neighborhoods so that our young people will be safe. Our goal is to have something for everyone right here in Covington.”

Parks & RecreationThe Covington Parks and Recreation Department is proud to serve the residents of Covington by offering a wide range of quality activities and events for the entire family and well-maintained parks and trails. From Covington’s beginning, parks and recreational pursuits have been important to the community’s quality of life, and this tradition has endured.

CEDAR CREEK PARK - 30 acres of the 110 acre Cedar Creek Park were acquired by the City of Covington in 2003 with the assistance of a King County Conservation Futures Grant. The park features high quality wetlands, salmon bearing creek, trails and diverse habitat areas.

CEDAR VALLEY NATURAL AREA - 26020 186th Place SE. The 6.75 acre natural area was acquired from King County in 2002.

COVINGTON AQUATIC CENTER - 18230 SE 240th Street. The Covington Aquatic Center was acquired from King County in 2004. The facility contains a 25-meter indoor pool with water slide and room available for rentals. For scheduling and information call 425-480-2480.

COVINGTON COMMUNITY PARK - This park is located at 17649 SE 240th Street (southwest corner of 180th and 240th). The property features a full-size grass soccer field, paved parking log and

portable-style toilets. Over a mile of paved and soft surface trails, most of which are wheelchair accessible, wind through the pasture and 15-acre forested area.

CRYSTAL VIEW PARK - 25412 170th Place SE. Crystal View Park was Covington’s first park. The 2.2 acre parcel features a half basketball court, play equipment and picnic tables.

EVERGREEN PARK - 19801 SE 262nd Street. When completed, the park will feature: Pre-school age appropriate play equipment, natural areas and a walking path.

FRIENDSHIP PARK - 15808 SE 254th Place. The park is a converted storm water pond. The .6 acre park features a basketball court, picnic area, children’s play equipment, walking path and grassy area for informal play.

GERRY CRICK SKATE PARK - 25064 164th Avenue SE. It features a 70 foot by 100 foot skating area with above ground ramps and a portable-type restroom facility. There is no on site parking available.

JENKINS CREEK PARK - 18050 SE 267th Place. The 23 acre park features walking trails and natural areas.

JENKINS CREEK REGIONAL TRAIL - 18400 SE 267th Place - access from the west end of Timberlane Drive SE and from east end of SE 264th Place. This 23-acre park is centrally located in the city. Features include a spring fed pond, natural areas, walking trails, picnic tables and park benches. The upper meadow and park features on the east side of the park are open. The lower meadow on the west side of the park is currently closed to public access.

SOOS CREEK PARK AND TRAIL - King County Parks. King County continues to operate the regional trail system through the park. The 183 acre park acts as an urban separator between Kent and Covington providing critical habitat areas.

THE RESERVE - The Reserve is a regional stormwater facility. It has a maintenance access road surrounding the pond that also serves as a half-mile loop walking trail. There are benches and picnic tables along the trail.

A 480-acre day-use park with more than three miles of freshwater shoreline on the Green River. The park’s most unique feature is its “geysers” or methane seeps. Park activities include whitewater rafting and model airplane flying. The park is open year round for day use only. Hours: 8:00 am - dusk. Model airplane flying hours: Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm or dusk, whichever is earlier; Monday through Thursday, 10:00 am - 7:00 pm or dusk, whichever is earlier; Fridays 10:00 am to dusk for electric or non-powered flight only.

KANASKAT-PALMER STATE PARK

A 320-acre camping park on a small, low plateau in a natural forest setting. The park has two miles

of shorelines on the Green River. Boat and raft launching is by hand only. River rafting and kayaking down the Green River Gorge is for expert-level enthusiasts only. Shoreline activities include nature appreciation, trout fishing and picnicking. Hours: 8 a.m. to dusk. The park is open year round for camping and day use.

NOLTE STATE PARK

A 117-acre day-use park with 7,174 feet of freshwater shoreline on Deep Lake in the Green River Gorge. Covered with forests and blessed with water the land was a resort for many years before it was donated to the State Parks Department. Summer hours: 8 a.m. to dusk. Closed October 1 - March 31.

MT. RAINIER NATIONAL PARK

Are you prepared? Being prepared can change everything. By planning ahead, you can increase the chances of survival for you and your family, not to mention gain peace of mind knowing you are in control.

Catastrophes can happen at any time. Preparing for three days will help you make it through many of the disasters you’ll face in the Puget Sound region, including major storms and even small earthquakes. However, to make it through a major catastrophe, like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you’ll need to be prepared for longer, at least 7 to 10 days.

Catastrophes can happen at any time and are likely to happen here. Imagine you are at work, on the road, or at home during a catas-trophe. How would you communicate with loved ones? Are you prepared to survive without essential services, such as running water, electricity, or phones for 7 to 10 days?

✔ Make a family emergency communication plan,identify an out-of-state contact

✔ Plan for people, pets and property✔ Review and practice your emergency plan

✔ Build a kit for at least 7 to 10 days✔ Save important documents/records on USB drives,

store one at home and one in a safety deposit box✔ Create customized kits for home, offi ce and vehicle

✔ Get involved – Create networks of neighbors and co-workers, work together to pool resources

✔ Participate in a training – CPR, fi rst aid, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT)

✔ Learn how to reduce hazards (e.g. shutting off gas supply if needed, strap water heater in place, etc.)

Build a Kit for at Least 7 to 10 Days

Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort.

Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, fi rst aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home.

Below are suggested basic supplies to survive for 7 to 10 days. ■ Water – one gallon per person per day for drinking

and sanitation■ Food – at least 7 to 10 day supply of non-perishable food

per person■ Cash – ATMs won’t work without electricity■ Battery-powered radio and extra batteries■ Flashlight and extra batteries■ First aid kit■ Whistle to signal for help■ Filter mask or cotton t-shirt to help fi lter the air■ Moist towelettes for sanitation■ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed■ Manual can opener for food■ Shelter items like tents, tarps and rope ■ Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation■ Unique family needs: supplies for infants, pets and elderly,

prescriptions, and important family documents
