I plan to rearrange some targets before the weekend. I know Winter Range does more target separation, etc. Put on some warm clothes and expect to shoot. We will shoot no matter what the shooters count is for anyone wanting to shoot. We had a work party Saturday and got the opening between the office and the kitchen covered. It sure makes a difference. Now the watershed should not run thru the covered seating area. It will also help keep the area cleaner. Very soon we will chain the area to keep the cattle out. On another note. Since I am retired now I am available by phone if any club member wishes to call me and discuss any issues or make suggestions you might wish to talk about.

Shady Continuied Spur also has his Favorite son in law shooting with us (Hold’em) and his second time to shoot gunfighter he won the category. I think I heard him say “look out Rock Rotten you’re next”. We also had a couple of first time out of state visitors shoot with us (Fargo Kid and Eleanor Jewel). Enjoyed shooting with them and both did real well. We also had a couple of new young shooters to shoot with us. A young gun named Nicholas Cates and a buckaroo/chipmunk named Buck, both of y’all be sure and come back it was great shooting with you. See ya at the range, stay warm...!

Tx Banker Continuied Update 8 Feb 2019 Good Morning, It's very cold. With that being said, the current conditions for Saturday and Sunday are not getting any better. Lone Star WILL NOT SHOOT SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. The range will be closed the entire weekend. If there should be any questions feel free to contact me 214-850-9695 or email me. I sincerely regret having to make this decision. Weather is dealing Lone Star hard times for this month and the last two months. Hopefully it will be better for March and the months ahead. Wild Bunch Corner

By Dusty Boddams SASS #1907

Wild Bunch Range Officer

January 19’ Wild Bunch As this is written a polar vortex with temperature wind chills 64 degrees below zero is crossing parts of the country. Ain’t Texas great? Wild Bunch started cool and crisp ending up the day in shirt sleeves. After the safety meeting the first stage of the day was at the pecan tree where modern, traditional and doughboy used the 45 auto with 3 mags, 5 rifle and 4 shotgun. Greased Lightnin made his triumphant return having been a little scarce around the club due to work duties. Glad your back! This month introduces “dead mans gun” for our local match where a ww2 or earlier pistol may be staged to shoot a bank of 7 targets shot in the string along with the 45 automatic. So a 28 round stage would be shot with 3 mags of 45 plus 1 mag from the dead mans gun. This gives the opportunity to shoot a non WB pistol in competition such as Luger, P-38, Broomhandle Mauser, Colt 1902 Hammer, 03 hammerless, Walther PP, PPK, Astra 600, 400 etc. Yes you can shoot a double action but will have to reload 1 round or take a miss. Lots of fun putting old obsolete oddball guns to use in competition! Safety protocols for DMG is the same for the 1911. Billy Bob used a Hipower, Hoodoo had a Hipower and Dusty used a 1902 Colt military for DMG . Stage 2 found us under Brazos Point shooting the dueling trees, statics, PCR 5 rounds along with the shotgun and doughboy following the same sequence but using the BAMM rifle out to 90 yards.

Watauga kid proves himself to be a rifle shooter hitting all the doughboy targets offhand. Bouncing back over to the pecan tree with 28 pistol combining statics, falling plates and bells along with 5 doughboy at around 65 yards, a shotgun and a hand full of charcoal provided great entertainment for the Bursey boys, Goatneck and Capt. Evans were getting ready for winter range and both really enjoyed this stage. Triple F also shot this stage fast and enjoyed shooting the variety of different sized targets. Over to the area by the fort. 2 banks of seven reactionary targets brought 28 rounds of justice beginning by Wicked Felina pointing toward the targets and yelling “you in the hat” drawing her pistol for 2 sweeps moving 3 yards and 2 sweeps on 7 targets at about 9 yards put a smile on her face. Evil Roy really likes these targets and said as a bonus stage let’s shoot 7 for speed championship of the universe and crowned the grand Poo ba of existence (or something to that effect) then Travis says one hand only! Then another says hands over your head elbows locked! Deal! So we did all 3, elbows locked overhead, strong hand only, 7 plates. Now this was a fiercely competed stage! It was close lots of good shooters, some were faster, some shot clean but the one that shot it clean and fast is the newly crowned best in the whole wide universe, grand PooBa and master of all deluxe excelsior the bestest, greatest Evil Roy! Taking a lunch break (thanks Sid we appreciate lunch!) and hearing the scores we returned to Brazos Point for BAMM sniper and combat. BAMM is well attended and just a lot of fun. Sniper consisted of 10 shots rested at 90 to 105 yards and combat was 10 shots, offhand from 2 locations.

Hey cowboys you are invited and welcome to stay and shoot BAMM with us. Even if you don’t have a rifle mosey over and we will accommodate you. Next month features more great wild bunch. Bring a “dead mans gun” if you want or we will have some available if you want to try it. Bring a BAMM rifle. Bring a GAMM rifle (Garand Action Military Match) The annual LSFSC match “ROUND UP” returns July 13-14 with cowboy action shooting And new this year Wild Bunch action shooting held in conjunction which will have a Doughboy category. This is a neat deal! This is the first annual match anywhere that is offering cowboy and WB as separate full matches shooting their own stages with their own posse and as a bonus the first doughboy shot as its own main match category. The Texas State Championship Wild Bunch on the Brazos is October 18, 19, 20 features 10 main match stages with BAMM,GAMM and a bunch of great side matches. Also October 4,5,6 is the Oklahoma state wild bunch championship it also features 10 great stages, BAMM (with moving target!) and several fun side matches on Friday. These two matches are the wild bunch shooters Oktoberfest! I’m Dusty Boddams and that’s the Boddam line.

Camp Cooper Military Post on the Clear Fork

of the Brazos River

By German Jack Fordern

SASS #1015556

The line of military forts on the frontier of North and West Texas was established for several reasons. The earliest forts were established to protect the pioneers going west to California, protect passengers on the Butterfield Stage, and secure safe passage of mail along the same routes. Eventually, forts were established into the 1870s at what would hopefully be strategic points to protect the settlers on the frontier from the savage raids and attacks of the marauding wild Indians. Camp Cooper was a different type of military post. This position was established to protect the Indians from the settlers. Interestingly, within the city of present day Graham, TX, the state established the Brazos Indian Reservation. This area existed from 1855 to 1859. At one time, 1000 Indians from various tribes all over Texas were gathered here. The reservation was for the purpose of teaching the savages the “white man’s ways” of farming and agriculture. Another reservation, the Comanche Indian Reservation, also operated from 1855 to 1859. Several 100 Comanche savages were there. Attempts were also made to convert these Indians to learning the skills of farming that would allow them to become “good Indians”, by the estimation of the settlers. The Comanche Reservation was close to the southern boundary of Throckmorton County. However, the settlers did not usually trust the intent of these “good Indians”. Settlers tended to blame these reservation Indians for the horrid

raids and attacks that the Indians not yet confined to the reservation would make on the outnumbered settlers. The settlers would retaliate by attacking the “good Indians” at times. Thus, near the Comanche Indian Reservation, the military post of Camp Cooper was established to protect the innocent reservation Indians from the enraged settlers. Ultimately, however, the Indians of both the Comanche and Brazos reservations had to be removed to the Indian Territory Reservations to protect them from the settlers. Robert E. Lee was the commander of Camp Cooper from April of 1856 through July of 1857. The War of Northern Aggression almost started at Camp Cooper just weeks before Fort Sumter. A group of Texans, acting on their own and not connected to any official legal or military unit, came and demanded that the camp be turned over and surrendered to them. They were about to attack when a contingent of Texas troops under the command of Col. W.C. Dalrymple arrived just in time, and armed well enough to prevent the Texas Citizens group from over taking the Post. Capt. S.D. Carpenter, the Camp Cooper commander, was ready to defend against the citizens; however, he turned the Camp Cooper post over to the State Troops. This action ended Camp Cooper as a U.S. military post in Texas __________________________ Author Johnny Baker Jr. is German Jack Fordern. His historical novel, Burnt Alive in Gumption Junction, is for sale on Amazon in Kindle and paperback, and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Musuem at Ft. Fisher in Waco, TX. He is currently writing a sequel.
