and 3. Both Rugby League and Netball were
on offer on the day, with perfect weather and
wonderful organisation ensuring the success of
these events. A huge thank you to the children
for their wonderful sportsmanship and also to
the teachers and staff involved in coaching.
Yesterday we also ran the first Adventure Club
day which went exceptionally well. The
children were involved in rock climbing,
bushwalking, caving, going on a flying fox and
going in a cave behind a huge waterfall. All
children had a great time that saw them very
tired by the end of the day. Next term the
Adventure Club will return and all children are
eligible to be involved.
We also saw two of our students make
representative teams this week with Luke Kinsey
chosen for Western Region AFL and Josh
Pokoney being chosen for Western Rugby
League. We wish the boys the best of luck
heading towards the state carnivals that will be
held later in the year.
Anja Gower and Isabella Scammell are
currently involved in swimming at the State
Championships and we are sure they will be
performing well.
A very exciting event that occurred last week
involved our school captain Lindsay Munro.
Lindsay travelled to Sydney with Mr Murray
where he presented a speech at a Teachers
Federation Conference. Standing alone in front
of over 100 delegates Lindsay put forward an
outstanding presentation that achieved a
standing ovation. To say that the school and
wider community of Cowra are proud of
Lindsay would be an understatement. Well
done Lindsay.

Dear Parents
As we come to the end of what seems an
incredibly busy term we can reflect on
tremendous effort shown throughout the school.
Each class has worked tirelessly in completing
tasks and programs that has resulted in strong
progress by all students.
This week we are looking forward to our Anzac
service at school which will be held tomorrow,
Friday, 11 April . The children will be involved in an
assembly service signifying the commitment and
service of our servicemen and women. During the
holiday the school will be participating in the
Cowra Anzac Day march on Friday 25 April, and
we encourage our students to join with the school
to march. Full winter uniform is to be worn and the
children are to meet outside the Services club
prior to the march at 10.20am.
As Easter is just around the corner we are also
looking forward to the Easter Hat Parade being
held tomorrow, Friday at 9.30am. The children
have been very excited in stage 1 getting ready
for this event in preparing their hats.
This week the school has been involved in a huge
gala day of sport involving all children in Stages 2
program since 2008. Over that time we
have experienced significant
improvement in student outcomes both
academically and behaviourally.
As in all programs constant review and
adjustment is necessary to ensure ongoing
effectiveness. To strengthen and simplify
our acknowledgement of successful
learning behaviours we are introducing
separate infants and primary gotcha
attainment levels. This will ensure that our
Infants’ children will have had the
opportunity to attain the highest level
within their early years of school and then
recommence throughout their primary
years.
Term 2 will see the commencement of the
new level system. Whilst Infants’ children
will largely remain unaffected the primary
students will have some adjustments
made to their levels and awards. We are
looking forward to our new certificates,
medals, bars and trophies and the
introduction of our wall of fame later in
the year.
Lastly I would like to wish everyone a safe
and happy Easter holiday break. I
encourage all parents and carers to take
the time over the break to read with their
children. As always I would also like to
instruct all children to wear the
appropriate equipment (helmet) if riding
a bike these holidays and to watch for
traffic if they are riding on or near the
road. Have a great break and we look
forward to seeing everyone return on
Tuesday, 29 April.
Regards
Brad Tom

WESTERN REGION RUGBY LEAGUE
SELECTION TRIALS - DUBBO
On Monday, 7 April, seven students from Cowra Public School
travelled to Dubbo to try out for selection in the Under 11’s and
Open Western Region Rugby League teams. These students
played up to four games throughout the day with selectors
working overtime to try and pick the best possible sides to
compete at the state trials.
At the end of the day Harlee Simms was selected in the Under
11’s possibles and probable side. These two teams then had to
play off against each other. Unfortunately, Harlee missed out on
Western Region selection.
Joshua Pokoney and Luke Kinsey were then selected in the
Open’s possibles and probable sides. From this game, Joshua
gained selection as five eighth in the Western Region team whilst
Luke gained selection as a shadow reserve. Joshua will join this
team later in the year at Tweed Heads for the NSW State
Championships.
If any players is injured or unable to attend these championships,
Luke could then gain selection.
All Cowra Public School boys tried their hardest on Monday and
must be congratulated for their sportsmanship and ability. You
are a credit to our school, your families and yourselves.

LEAGUE GALA DAY
On Tuesday, 8 April Cowra District schools competed in the Annual
David Peachey - Russell Richardson Shield Rugby League Gala Day.
Over 300 children from Cowra Public, Mulyan, St Rapael’s, St Edward’s,
Canowindra, Canowindra Public and Forbes North participated in both
competitive and non-competitive competitions. Cowra Public School
fielded our largest number of students ever with over 90 boys and girls
taking part.
All children participated to the best of their abilities and came away
with a better understanding of the game of rugby league. Games
consisted of seven players per side on the field and were supervised
under the NRL safe play code. Year 11 students from Cowra High and
Forbes High were referees and paid particular attention to ensure all
kids were safe, getting a fair go and most of all enjoying themselves. We
would like to thank the referees for helping our children have a great
day.
Each team played at least three games and although the weather was
a little warm all kids participated in the right spirit. The non-competitive
teams played a round robin format of games with the emphasis on
learning key concepts of the game. Their games were not so much of
who won, but more of getting in and having a go. Most of these kids
had never played footy before so it was fantastic to see these children
getting out of their comfort zone.
The competitive competition was more for the children who play rugby
league on a regular basis and have the required skill level to compete
against other children with similar skills. Cowra Public had one Stage 2
and one Stage 3 team. The Stage 2 team finished with one victory from
three games. Mr Garlick (coach) was very pleased with the way the
players conducted themselves. They played hard but fair and really got
into the spirit of the day. The Stage 3 team had a successful day
winning four of the five games. Unfortunately their only loss came in the
final against a much stronger St. Raphael’s team. Although losing the
final, the team will still get to compete at the Western Region Peachy
Shield finals in Dubbo next term.
Congratulations to all children who participated on Tuesday. It was
wonderful to see kids running around, meeting new people but most of
all, enjoying themselves. A huge thank you to Mrs Duncan, Mrs Oborn,
Mr Lewis and Mr Garlick for coaching and supervising the teams. Also a
very special thank you Kobe Murray (Cowra High) for giving up his day
to help coach the Stage 3 competitive team. The boys really
appreciated his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game.

NETBALL GALA DAY
On Tuesday, 8 April, Stages 2 and 3 participated in a
Netball Gala Day at Col Stinson Park.
Amidst a relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere all
students participated keenly in five games of netball
against St Raphael’s, Mulyan and Holmwood Public
Schools.
For some Cowra students the game of netball was all
new to them. Despite this, however, they were eager
to listen to advice and participated enthusiastically.
Lacie McKeown, Nakeya Ryan and Blake Graham
were among these new recruits who performed
admirably. Blake was a natural as a goal shooter - I
lost count of how many goals he scored throughout
the day!
The more ‘seasoned’ netballers displayed their
prowess with flair. Their experience in netball was
obvious with their ‘tight’ team work in moving the ball
quickly down the court and scoring goals. Some
notables on the day were Jazmyn Carter, Nikita
Frappell and the dynamic goal shooter, Jessica
Henderson.
Overall the Gala Day was a great success for all
schools. The organisation of the event was excellent
and the day ran very smoothly. Cowra Public School
students were outstanding in their team work,
sportsmanship and behaviour.

BUNNINGS EASTER FAMILY NIGHT
Bunnings Cowra will be holding an Easter Family Night on
Thursday, 10 April between 5.00-6.00pm.
The Easter Bunny will be stopping for a visit.
Look forward to seeing everyone there.
MOTHER’S DAY
STALL
The P & C is holding a Mother’s
Day stall during Week 2 next
term.
This will be a great opportunity
for all students to participate in some independent
shopping. All gifts are priced between $2.00 and $5.00 and
there is a great variety of gifts to choose from. Some gifts are
labelled for Mum and Grandmother and the rest are
unlabelled. There has been approximately 700 items
ordered, so there is stock for students to purchase more than
one gift.
There will be a viewing of gifts on Tuesday, 6 May. The P & C
will go around all the classes and display the gifts for
viewing. The students can then purchase their gifts on
Friday, 9 May. Students may bring their money in before
Friday and leave it with their class teachers.
Gifts all come gift boxed, cello wrapped, in a pouch or on a
card and will be placed in plastic shopping bags once
purchased.
