division feature:cad & mechanicalAs the team moves into week 3 of the build season, the Mechanical and CAD teams are furiously working away day and night to build the robot. Many of the components for the robot are currently in the design process and all of our prototype shooters such as Cyclops, Zeus, Marley and Snowman have all been built and are being demonstrated today so the team can choose one. Once the shooter is chosen, the members of the CAD team will enter into the busiest week of their lives. In the next week, they will have to finalize the design for each subsystem and then find a way to mount them to each other and the drivetrain. After this, the baton will be passed onto the mechanical team, who will have to build and assemble the robot in just as short a time.

Austin Bianchini, Student Head of CAD & Mechanical, has been involved in FRC since grade 9. Developing important skills from the school’s tech design classes, Austin has transferred his sense for mechanical engineering and computer aided design (CAD) to the team’s competition robots. A few of his notable accomplishments include designing the intake subsystem

on our 2012 competition robot, Edgewalker, and the gearbox on our 2011 Logomotion robot. Austin furthers his contributions as a driver, and has helped lead the team to numerous awards, including regional champions in 2012 and World Championships division finalists in 2011.

Taran Ravindran, Assistant Head of the division, helps mould younger students into inquisitive and knowledgeable young men through off season projects such as design challenges. In these challenges, the boys learn about science and technology, while still developing valuable life skills such as communication, leadership, and the ability to problem solve. The final test of their knowledge comes in the form of the FRC game, in which they create a robot that models their character and all their hard work. My job is to lead these boys on the path to success and to push them towards innovation.

Jamie Rose, an Assistant Head of CAD & Mechanical, specializes in the computer-aided design portion of the division. His responsibilities include helping new members learn how to use SolidWorks to make CADs, making critical design decisions, making sure CADs and manufactured parts are done on time, and manufacturing parts for the robot.

ultimate ascent game overviewEvery year, the robotics team strives to overcome the difficult challenges that the new robot game presents. This year’s game is Ultimate Ascent. The objective of the game is to score as many discs as possible in goals located at the ends of the field. Another important element of the game, a formidable feat to accomplish, is climbing the metal pyramid at the end of the game. In the short span of 6 weeks, Team 610 will be building a 120-pound robot that can accomplish these

tasks, using their ingenuity and support from team mentors to guide them. Stay tuned to see how we are progressing throughout the build season and slowly climb our way to the top!
