Welcome

Regine GüntherSenator for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection

At the turn of the 19th century, city life was characterised by smoking chimneys, cramped living conditions and poor sanitation. Since then the transformation from industrial to service- and knowledge-based society has brought frequent changes on the urban world. Our cities and conurbations are now cleaner, greener and more healthy. Cities are changing.

Today, society’s demands for a city that is “worth living in” require not only an efficient infrastructure and utilities but also the promotion of health and wellbeing in the immediate area. In the future, towns and cities will have to be healthy and close to nature. Public spaces, including gardens, parks, natural areas and woodland, will play an important part in achieving this goal.

By coming together with IGA Berlin 2017 GmbH and the Association of German Landscape Architects to organise this international “metropolitan open space” conference, we wanted to examine the city both as a vision of the future and a challenge for the present. To identify the significance of public open spaces in the fiercely contended space between the functionality of green infrastructure and the “garden” as a “longed-for” place?

Come and make your contribution to our discussion on met-ropolitan visions of the future and help us develop new ideas for creating public open spaces

The “metropolitan open space” conference will address issues around the significance of public space in this, the century of the city. In 2007, for the first time in the history of the human race, more people lived in cities than in the coun-tryside. This is a trend that is set to continue.

Consequently, cities have a central role to play in implement-ing global climate, environmental and equality targets and ensuring the integration of disadvantaged groups. At the same time, they form a test bed for new economic models and lifestyles, for cultural and artistic ideas and the individual and collective use of public (open) space.

Organised to mark IGA Berlin 2017, the Friday conference will address metropolitan visions for the future as they relate to public open space. What are the key drivers of sustain-able urban development? What changes are cities and pub-lic open spaces currently undergoing? And how can open space planners react to this these changes? Do the devel-opment of open spaces and urban growth represent two conflicting dynamics? Can the extensive symbolism of the garden become a metaphor for the city of the future?

Contributions from experts in the fields of science, research and development and professional practice will examine these issues from various angles while contemporary land-scape designs created by award-winning landscape archi-tects from five continents specifically for IGA Berlin 2017 will provide an international dimension.

On Saturday these international landscape architects will present their conceptual gardens for the IGA.

We are delighted to invite you to attend the conference and look forward a day of exciting encounters and fruitful exchange.
