Adaptive Display Brightness
The display on a typical mobile PC consumes more battery power
than any otherpart of the computer. Windows 7 automaticallyreduces display brightness after a period of inactivity, much like cellphones do today.
In addition, Windows 7 intelligently adapts to your activity. Forexample, if the screen dims after 30 seconds and you immediatelymove the mouse to brighten the display, Windows 7 will wait 60
seconds before dimming the display again.

Rearranging theFurniture
Unless youve seen it demonstrated, you may not know
that the icons in the new taskbar arent fixed in-place.
You can reorder them to suit your needs, whethertheyre pinned shortcuts or running applications.Whats particularly nice is that once theyre reordered,
you can start a new instance of any of the first fiveicons by pressingWin+1,Win+2,Win+3,etc.
Whats less well-known is that you can similarly dragthe system tray icons around to rearrange their order,
or move them in and out of the hidden icon list. Its aneasy way to customizeyour system to show the thingsyou want, whereyou want them.

Its a Drag
Much play has been made of the Jump Lists feature in
Windows 7, allowing applications like Windows LiveMessenger to offer an easy task-based entry point.
Jump lists replace the default right-click contextmenu in the new taskbar; another way to access them
is by left-clicking and dragging up in a kind ofswooshing motion. This was designed for touch-enabled devices where the samegesture applies.
Another place whereyou can swoosh (not an
official Microsoft term) is the IE 8 address bar, wherethe downward draggesture brings up an expandedlist containing the browser history, favorites andsimilarentries.
The sloweryou drag, the cooler the animation!

One More of the Same,Please
Ifyouve alreadygot an application open onyour desktop (forexample, a commandprompt window), and you want to open asecond instance of the same application, youdont have to go back to the start menu.
You can simply hold down the Shift key whileclicking on the taskbar icon, and it will open anew instance of the application rather than
switching to theexisting application.
For a keyboard-free shortcut, you can middle-click with the third mouse button to do the
same thing.

Specialized Windows Switching
Another feature that power users will love isthe ability to do a kind of Alt+Tab switchingacross windows that belong to just oneapplication. For example, if youve got five Outlook message
windows open along with ten other windows, you canquickly tab through just the Outlook windows byholding down the Ctrl key while you repeatedly click onthe single Outlook icon.
This will toggle through each of the five Outlookwindows in order, and is way faster than opening
Alt+Tab and trying to figure out which of the tinythumbnail images relates to the specific messageyoure trying to find.

ClearType Text Tuning and Display Color Calibration
If you want to tune up your display for image ortext display, we have the tools included out ofthe box. Its amazing what a difference thismakes: by slightly darkening the color of thetext and adjusting the gamma back a little, thislaptop display looks much crisper than it did
before.
Check out cttune.exe and dccw.exerespectively, or run the applets from ControlPanel.
Youd adjust the brightness and contrastsettings on a fancy 42 HDTV: do the same forthe computer displays that you stare at everyday!
