thuRSdayuse your imagination to Start a Fire10/21/2010 | 8:30 AM - 9:15 AM in an era of chronically underfunded and deteriorating american infrastruc-ture one man shrugged off petty politics, won over skeptics and rebounded from setbacks to prove that innovation is alive and well in the business world. John hillman, inventor of the hybrid Composite beam, (hCb) was working 50 hours a week as a bridge engineer. he spent over 14 years working on his formula and put his first hCb in place in 2007. even at one-tenth the weight of a conventional concrete beam, the hCb can carry freight trains and last indefinitely. according to the american society of Civil engineers over 26% of us bridges are structurally deficient or function-ally obsolete. thanks to John’s perseverance and obsession, his structural beam—consisting of a corrosion resistant fiberglass box containing self-consolidating concrete, steel strands, foam and a pink frilly-looking inflat-able plastic bag —bridges can be assembled quickly and at low costs. Join us as we listen to the story of John hillman a modern day inventor, sharing his tales of obstacles, disappointments, challenges that lead to his creation and how his company fostered creativity and innovation!

John Hillman P.E., S.E., President & Founder, HC Bridge Company, LLC

Wikipedia defines innovation as a change in the thought process for doing something or “new stuff that is made useful”. it may refer to an incremental emergent or radical and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations. Cheminnovations is a gather-ing of chemical process engineers to discuss innovative ways to meet the needs of their core business. our three Keynote sessions will take you through different aspects of innovation. We will start with three speakers on the first day giving an overview/state of the industry and how large players foster innovation. on day two we will listen to John lienhard speak about how inventive minds work and highlight some inventions that have moved the industry forward, and on the last day we will hear from a modern day inventor telling you how he used his imagination to advance the concrete industry.

Session 1d: People Management & Knowledge transfer10/20/2010 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM this session addresses the demographic issues facing the industry as new process engineers are brought in to replace the aging workforce in many plants. the issues address the problems associated with transferring many years of experience to the new process engineers, who in many ways speak an entirely different language and are motivated by different factors that can make management and knowledge transfer difficult. the changing economic environment has led to a smaller workforce, different work functions being outsourced and changing at-titudes and motivations in the people we work with everyday. this session attempts to bring understanding to the changing environment and how we can effectively work with people in this day and age.

chementator & Poster Sessions

Track 6: chementator Lightning round live interviews, hosted by Chemical engineering editors, will identify the unique benefits of newly proven technologies or approaches that can achieve breakthroughs for chemical & petro-chemical process industry applications. the following presenters will have 10 minutes to an-swer questions such as: how the new process or technology works, how it differs from traditional methods, how the economics or other benefits compare quantitatively, and many more.

interview sessions are offered in the following areas:•BreakthroughsinReactorandCatalystTechnologies•AlternativeChemicalPathways•MiningMoreEnergy•AdvancesinAutomation,Instrumentation&Control•BreakthroughsinMixing&Separating•MinimizingPollution&TreatingWaste

Track 7: Poster Sessionsthese poster sessions complement the Che-mentator lightening round that precedes them, and in some cases expand upon a topic being covered in the Conference sessions. While these technologies or approaches might not be brand new or completely unique, they are generally categorized as underutilized in that they offer substantial benefits that are currently not being applied to their full potential in the Cpi.
