CPMChapter 3 Vocabulary
absolute value
The distance of a number from zero on a number line.
coordinate graphA system of
graphing ordered pairs of numbers on a coordinate plane.
decimalThe point between the
whole number in the ONES PLACE and the number in
the TENTHS place in a decimal number.
equivalent fractions and ratios
Two fractions or ratios __:__ that have the same numerical
value.
fractionA number expressed in
the form where a and b are integers and b is not equal to
0.
integersWhole numbers (not fractions) that
can be positive, negative or zero.
least common multiple
The smallest common multiple of
a set of two or more integers.
lowest terms/ simplest form
A fraction for which the numerator and the
denominator have no common factor greater
than one.
multiplicative identityIf any number or
expression is multiplied by the number 1, the result is equal to the original number or
expression.
oppositeThe same number but with the opposite sign (+ or −). The additive
inverse.
ordered pairsTwo numbers written in order as
follows: (x, y). The first coordinate (x) represents the horizontal distance from the
origin. The second coordinate (y) represents the vertical distance
from the origin.
originThe point on a coordinate
plane where the x-axis and y-axis intersect. This point
has coordinates (0, 0). Also, the point assigned to
zero on a number line.
percentA ratio that compares a
number to 100.
pointAn exact location in
space. In a coordinate plane, an ordered pair
shows its location.
portionA part of something; a
part of a whole.
prime factorsA factor that is a prime number.
quadrantsThe coordinate plane is divided
into four of these.
ratioCompares two
quantities by division. Usually represented
as a fraction.
sampleA subset (group) of a given population with
the same characteristics as the whole population.
scale drawingA drawing that shows a real
object with accurate sizes except they have all been reduced or enlarged by a certain amount
(called the scale factor).
simplifyTo write a less complicated
expression with the same value.
x-axisThe horizontal
number line on a coordinate grid.
x-coordinateIn an ordered pair,
(x, y), it is the value of the x.
y-axisThe vertical number line on a coordinate
grid.
y-coordinateIn an ordered pair,
(x, y), it is the value of the y.
