Summary & Highlights

How about the application of plastics in the automobile sector? What challenges are faced by plastic materials

arising from high performance automobile trimming products? What new progress has been made in the

application of high molecular materials in trimming products? What are the applications of non-continuous carbon

fiber reinforced composite materials and woven composite materials in automobile? At the 3rd

CPRJ Auto

Conference ―Plastics in Automotive 2013‖ held on 14-15, experts from automakers and auto part manufacturers,

material and equipment suppliers, high education institutes shared their insights on the applications of plastic

materials in the auto industry. This forum was organized by Adsale ―China Plastics and Rubber Journal‖ (CPRJ) in

collaboration with Great Wall Motor Company Limited. Han Lei, Vice Secretary General of the Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE China), delivered his

speech at the forum. While experiencing an optimistic general trend, as he indicated in his speech, the auto

industry is witnessing increasingly fierce competition and domestic brands are faced with substantial impact from

foreign brands. In addition to the substantial change in market and users’ needs, automobile enterprises should

change mindset and promote innovation. With the intensification of the plastics-for-steel conception and people’s

growing requirements for safety, environmental protection, attractive appearance and comfort, the application of

plastics in automobile is attracting unprecedented attention. According to Yang Jie, Vice President of Automotive

Material Engineering Institute of Great Wall Motor Technical Center, China’s auto industry is experiencing a

booming growth. To seek higher energy efficiency, higher quality and higher safety, Great Wall Motor will leverage

this platform and cooperate with industrial associations, experts, material suppliers and high education institutes

to promote the development of this industry. Meanwhile, Janet Tong, Deputy General Manager of Adsale

Publishing Ltd., extended her appreciation to all those attending the forum on behalf of the organizer, and

explained why they selected Baoding to hold this forum. She also emphasized the aim of the forum was to

promote exchange of ideas and share research findings for mutual benefits. In addition, she highlighted some

information about CHINAPLAS 2014.

In the morning of the 14th, Song Yanling, Vice Section Director of Great Wall Motor Automotive Material

Engineering Institute, delivered her speech titled ―Application of Automotive Plastic Material and Raw Material

Control‖. In her speech, she outlined the applications of plastic materials in several automobile enterprises and

highlighted the application of various types of materials in Great Wall Motor. In the last session, Director Song

highlighted the mode of Great Wall Motor to manage and control plastic materials. Cao Du, Vice President of

Chana Motor Automobile Research Institute, delivered his speech titled ―Challenges on Materials in Performance

Design of Automotive Trimming Products‖. In his speech, he outlined key performances, regulations, functional

and performance requirements, reliability/durability requirements, environmental test requirements and relevant

countermeasures for auto parts. Professor Wang Yizao, President of Composite Material Research Institute of

Tianjin University, delivered his speech titled ―Research on Noncontinuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composite

Material and Relevant Applications‖. He made comparison for several typical composite materials, cited some

products from some material suppliers; with the constant maturity of technology and process, as he emphasized,

non-continuous carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are expected to become mainstream materials for

the auto industry. In their speech titled ―Application of PPS in Auto Parts‖, Ms. Peng Lizhen and Mr. Feng Hui

from the Engineering Plastics Dept of Chevron Phillips Hong Kong Limited introduced the properties of Ryton

PPS, the firstmass-produced high-performance thermoplastic engineering plastic in the world. Thanks to the

features of PPS resin in addition to the blending of fiberglass and inorganic fillers, this material becomes a special

engineering plastic with improved performance and processibility.

Six speeches were arranged in the afternoon. Weng Kaimin, EMS

Automobile Sales Manager, delivered his speech titled ―Innovation in EMS

High Performance Material – An Energy Saving, Lighter Weight and Cost

Reducing Solution‖; Li Zhifeng, High Molecular Material Engineer of

Changchun Faway-Johnson Controls Automotive Systems, delivered his

speech titled ―Latest Application of High Molecular Materials in Automotive

Trimming Products‖; Mr. Wang Zenghui, Sales VP of Synventive Plastics

Industry (Suzhou) Limited, delivered his speech titled ―Hot Runner Technology

in the Automobile Industry‖; Mr. Yan Jianhua, Research Fellow of Lightweight

Structure Composite Material Research Institute of Donghua University,

delivered his speech titled ―Application of Woven Composite Materials in Automotive Structural Members‖; Liu Jie,

Senior Engineer of Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, delivered his speech titled ―Manifold – Assembly of

Nonmetal Materials for Auto Engine‖; Li Litao, Manager of Chinaust Group Hebei, the largest automotive pipeline

manufacturer in China, delivered his speech titled ―Solution to Plastic Pipeline for Automotive Fluid‖.

The one-day conference witnessed an overall enthusiasm and received extensive questioning from the

audience. Supplier Exhibition Booth also received extensive inquiry.

After the conclusion of the conference on the 14th, the Organizer received about 100 responses to ―Attendee

Questionnaire‖. Respondents speak highly of the services during the conference. Besides, it is generally believed

the contents of the presentations by the speakers match with the theme of the conference and each speaker

chose the most suitable topics for their presentations. On the other hand, some speakers put forward some

relevant recommendations for the conference. They wish the Organizer would organize more enterprises to

participate, attach greater importance to new technology, new processes and new materials, extend the time for

exchange. They also wish raw material enterprises would use more cases to illustrate their new materials and

new technology.

On the 15th, about 45 invitees visited Great Wall Motor Xushui Exhibition Hall and Production Line.

The presentations were more professional than I had expected, and the purpose of information exchange was well

achieved. I would expect more topics on technology trends and experience sharing in the next conference.
