Learning Skills Unit

05

The Learning Skills Unit (LSU) provides free ongo-ing academic support to students and assists them in the development of skills to improve their academic potential.

Through one-to-one tutorials and small group seminars students can develop skills such as report writing, exam preparation, time manage-ment and research techniques.

All new students are expected to attend their series of six (two hour each) Academic Prepara-tion Program Workshops:

Researching

Referencing

Be Job Ready

Essay Writing

Report Writing

Oral Presentations

Appointments can be made by visiting the LSU office on Level 1,

400 Kent Street

Sydney NSW 2000

Phone: (02) 9324 5737

Email: [email protected]

Hours of operation for the LSU are:

Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm.

This is a free service provided to students by CQUniversity Sydney.

Refer to: http://content.cqu.edu.au/FCWViewer/view.do?page=10069

Key factors in managing your studies:

Read your course profiles as soon as you get them.

Attend all lectures and tutorials to keep up-to-date with course and assignment information.

Prepare for classes by completing readings and activities. Note any questions to ask the teacher. Remember, once you get behind, it is hard to catch up.

For every 1 hour of class time, you need to spend at least 1 hour for reading, and assign-ment and exam preparation. If English is not your first language, it is recommended you spend more time reading and preparing as-signments.

Take notes (in class and when reading) and write down any concepts you don’t under-stand and questions you have.

Re-read your notes and test your knowledge regularly to help you prepare for exams and assignments.

Start to prepare for your assignments and exams from Week 1, so you are not over-whelmed later.

Record your assignment due dates and exam dates in a diary. Plan when you need to visit the library and LSU.

Plan what you will need to do to start and complete your assignments. For example, if Assignment 1 requires you to write a report and reference two journal articles, you should plan time to find out about reports, referenc-ing and researching.

Visit the LSU for information and to make appointments for assistance with your assess-ment tasks and exam preparation.

Take breaks in your study. Take a 5-10 minute break after 40-50 minutes of studying. Sleep and diet are also important.

Reward yourself after study sessions to ease the stress and provide motivation for study with free time, special foods or a movie.

Using a Time Planner

A planner will help you to organise the hours of your week so that you can balance all the activities you need to do.

On your planner, you should firstly record all work, lectures, tutorials and other commitments that have set times that you can not change.

Then you should look at what times are free and schedule in the best times for study and leisure.

Remember: It is important to make this planner realistic, so that it works for you. For example, it is im-portant to schedule leisure and free-time in your time planner.
