There is always a sense of anxiety when you launch a new publication. So when our first edition of CR Advantage was sent out in February, we had no idea how it would be received.

Would our Members see it as just another piece of corporate communication, or – as we hoped – as something of service to support you in your organisations, something which might encourage you to leverage our procurement expertise and capabil it ies to help you carry out your Mission?

The feedback was swift and positive, I am happy to report. The blend of information, profi les and case studies about what our Preferred Partners can bring to the CR Membership, was extremely well-received. So, encouraged, we are pleased to commit to continuing to provide you with the CR Advantage.

In this May edition, I hope you wil l f ind stories which have a practical application – for instance, a story on Diversey and the chemical solutions to many of the sanitation challenges our Members face, and how we at Church Resources benefitted from implementing our Video Collaboration solution – to other, more inspirational stories. I refer you particularly to the story about WorkVentures, a creative answer to the question of what to do with old IT hardware, and another on the Ingham Institute, a not-for-profit set up to research health issues facing a community on the edge of a large city.

Here is our undertaking to you: we wil l bring you fresh ideas in every edition which wil l deliver value – both price and non-price – in terms of savings and efficiencies and breadth of thinking. Tell us what you think of CR Advantage, and what you would l ike covered, by dropping the CR team an email at [email protected].

Remember, our mission is to be your first resource – but we can only do that if you help us.

With best wishes

Luke Kenny CEO, Church Resources

Church Resources prides itself on selecting the highest quality Preferred Partners that will bring maximum benefits to our Members. But do we practice what we preach? Do we make use of own Preferred Partners?

We put this to the test when it was time to install Video Collaboration (VC) equipment in our Sydney boardroom, and our Melbourne and Brisbane offices to enable our Business Development Managers in Victoria and Queensland to communicate easily with our Sydney head office, reducing travel time and cost, as well as the impact on the environment.

Voca, our new Video Collaboration Preferred Partner, oversaw the installation of the equipment into each of the offices from beginning to end. Following numerous tests, our staff were let loose on the equipment.

Our first major trial was the hosting of the Church Resources Board Meeting. With Board Members located in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, a typical Board Meeting required the Board Members to fly in to Sydney the night before the meeting, and then stay overnight in a local hotel. The Board Meeting typically runs for the better part of a day and into the night, requiring either a late night flight back home or another stay in a local hotel. This typically resulted in long days, time away from the family and pressure on wrapping things up in a set timeframe to meet flight schedules.

With Video Collaboration the Board Members were able to log in to the Church Resources boardroom and conduct a High Definition Video Collaboration Board Meeting, from the comfort of their own offices and without the expense and inconvenience of travel.

Church Resources’ CEO, Luke Kenny says:

“The CR Board has quickly adopted this new technology, with Members spread across three states, the first two Board Meetings of 2012 have been conducted by VC. Both meetings have been run without disruption, with over seven hours of live collaboration. The experience has been so successful that a third meeting will also be held by VC, and the process will be expanded to Board Sub-Committee Meetings.

The cost of Board travel was in excess of $2,100, and once you add catering and administration, each Board meeting held in Sydney is estimated at $3,000, an amount we save by conducting the meetings by Video Collaboration.”

The proof is in the pudding

As an Apple Authorised Reseller, Church Resources were keen to experience the new technology first-hand to improve the way we work, and to help us serve our Members better. Our Management Team and our Business Development Managers have been using Apple iPads for the last six months. The ability to carry around your office on a small portable device has proven to be a great benefit to our team.

Damian Jardine, Business Development Manager for Victoria and Tasmania, says:

“The iPad is proving to be a fantastic business tool in my role as BDM for CR. The ability to run high quality presentations and access information on the run is fantastic. Above all else though is the speed at which the device works! As someone who spends more time out of the office than in it, the immediate access to information provided by the iPad enables me to respond quickly to Member needs.”

We have also implemented Voca’s Video Collaboration solution on to our iPads, meaning that the iPad is becoming more powerful every day. From meetings between staff to bringing experts from our Preferred Partners right into a Member meeting via the technology, we are removing the barriers of distance more and more each day.

Damian Jardine says:

“Since implementing the VC services to my work I have begun to utilise it in a number of ways. The real change is in how I collaborate with colleagues in the Sydney office. Where I was travelling to Sydney for 2-3 days each month, I am now aiming to reduce that to one trip per quarter.

Regular collaboration is also taking place with Church Resources’ Strategic Partnerships Team, and I have been able to bring them into meetings with Members via Voca’s Clearsea app on my iPad to discuss specific elements of a solution face to face with the Member!”

We tie all this together by using Australia’s most advanced telephony and mobile network. Telstra provides everything we need to make all this technology work so seamlessly together, from providing the network into our Sydney office over which the Video Collaboration runs to providing the Business ADSL lines into our Brisbane office for General internet and Video Collaboration to providing the Next G Mobile network to which our iPads connect.

At Church Resources we truly believe that our Preferred Partners can and will add value to our business and this is proven by the way they consistently deliver service to us. We truly believe they can deliver the same benefits to your organisation.

Church Resources and our Preferred Partners work with not-for-profit aged care organisations to improve their products and save them money. We take a look at how our laundry solution delivered significant benefit to one of our Members.

When Work Health and Safety concerns were raised as part of their accreditation process, a not-for-profit Aged Care organisation needed to change the way they were handling their laundry facility. The CR Member specialises in dementia care, palliative care and rehabilitation. Their facility cares for a total of 74 residents with 20 high-care and 54 low-care patients.

Their laundry facility was equipped with two laundry machines – one 23kg and 22kg – processing approximately 6,600kg of linen a month, an average of 3kg of linen per resident per day.

At the time of the audit, laundry staff were handling 15-25kg drums of liquid. The potential for manual handling injuries and risk of contact with neat chemicals were major concerns.

The Solution

Sealed Air’s Diversey division recommended and installed its CLAX® REVOFLOW™ laundry solution system. The CLAX® REVOFLOW™ system not only delivers automated precision dosing of super concentrated products in smaller packs, its unique design minimises the risk of spillages in a neat wall mounted unit.

The ergonomic lightweight 4kg packs with its innovative cap lock system addressed both the manual handling and chemical contact concerns. In addition, facility staff liked the fact that concentrates would reduce the number of drums to be disposed and significantly reduce the storage space required for laundry chemicals.

The results

Since the CLAX® REVOFLOW™ laundry system was installed, staff commented on the great wash results, the noticeably fresher smell of linen imparted by the odour neutralising technology of the fabric softener and the ease and convenience of changing the containers.

Staff found the system easy to operate. The LED lights on the system and the simple troubleshooting wall chart have made the transition to the new system easy for laundry staff.

Outstanding wash Results

Half of the site’s linen is heavily soiled consisting of kylies, bibs, contaminated and red bags (foul contaminated). However. from installation only 2% of all loads have required a second wash.

Super concentrated products

The super concentrated products resulted in a 57% reduction in chemicals which translated directly to savings in storage space. Facility staff appreciated the space saving the CLAX® REVOFLOW™ system delivered.

Efficient use of resources

The CLAX® REVOFLOW™ laundry system is a more sustainable solution compared to 15-25 litre liquid system concentrates. There is a significant reduction in the amount of plastic used saving in both land fill and empty disposal costs, while the small increase in cardboard is 100% recyclable.

The CLAX® REVOFLOWTM system has also improved staff utilisation by allowing laundry staff to take on the responsibility for changing chemicals, thereby reducing laundry downtime. With the introduction of Diversey’s CLAX® REVOFLOW™ system, all Work Health and Safety risks were fully addressed.

Perfect washing, every time

To find out more about how the CLAX® REVOFLOW™ laundry system from Diversey can help improve your laundry facility, contact Church Resources by calling 1300 248 724 or emailing [email protected].

ConnectIT: bringing affordable PCs

to the not-for-profit community

Ten years ago Westpac approached not-for-profit organisation WorkVentures to see if there was a way their old computers could be reused to help the community. WorkVentures was already running other social programs using technology and was able to introduce a third partner, Microsoft, and together they established the Connect IT project to supply low-cost refurbished computers.

“Each year, Australian businesses need to dispose of millions of superseded computers. Managing the turnover of computer-related ‘waste’ in a sustainable and cost-effective manner is a challenge for many businesses,” said WorkVentures CEO Arsenio Alegre. “At the same time, 1.5 million Australian homes still don’t have access to a home computer or the internet and many not-for-profit organisations are struggling to balance their budgets. Connect IT is a pathway to supply those redundant business computers to those in need. It’s great for business, great for the environment and great for the community.”

“Refurbished computers provide an affordable alternative for organisations with a limited budget, and our clients have found that the performance is more than adequate for most needs,” said Alegre. “Refurbished computers are suitable for either their day-to-day business operations or where organisations help to provide computer and internet access to their clients.”

Principal of Richmond West Primary School, Peter Lord, is a great supporter of refurbished computers. “The PC quality is great – we can do everything we need to do. Through buying refurbished PCs

instead of new ones we were able to buy 35 PCs instead of eight. That made sure that I came back for another 40 the next year,” Peter said.

In addition to supplying schools and not-for-profit organisations, WorkVentures also supplies directly to individuals receiving Centrelink benefits. “We understand that taking that first step in purchasing a computer can be confronting for people who aren’t familiar with technology,” said Alegre. “The salespeople in retail stores speak in jargon, which might as well be another language, trying to convince you of why you need to spend thousands on the latest and greatest computer. We’re able to offer a much simpler process. We‘ve narrowed it down to a selection of key computer packages, each with different levels of performance, giving customers an easy and affordable way to get started.

“For people who are new to computers, we have a fantastic training package called ‘Take The Teacher Home,” said Alegre. “It’s a series of ten video tutorials that take people through the basic functions of the computer, and slowly helps them develop their confidence into writing letters, sending emails and accessing the internet. We can preload it on our computers so customers can watch it as many times as they like.”

Church Resources is currently supporting the Connect IT program within the not-for-profit community. The program offers Members a sustainable solution for PCs at an affordable cost. For further information visit www.workventures.com.au/connectit or call WorkVentures directly on 1800 112 205.

The Ingham Institute began its journey on January 22 1996, when Founding Benefactors, Jack and Bob Ingham of Inghams Enterprises, donated funds which marked the beginning of their continuous and ongoing support today. Funding was also provided by the State Government and more recently, the Institute received a grant from the Federal Government towards construction of the building.

Located within Sydney’s Liverpool Hospital, the Ingham Institute is a unique collaboration between the Health Services in South Western Sydney, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Western Sydney (UWS). It conducts cutting-edge medical research within specialist research streams that specifically address the health concerns of people in the South West including Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Serious Injury, Mental Health and Early Years, which focuses on the health issues of infants and children.

Each of the streams place an emphasis on translational research that uses the combined resources of the Ingham Institute to deliver practical outcomes that have application both domestically and internationally. Even though the Ingham Institute is young, it isn’t short of major achievements and research milestones.

In fact, just recently the Institute was awarded a $5.7 million program grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for a new cancer research project using an MRI coupled linear accelerator (MRI-Linac).

One of only three in the world and an Australian first, the MRI-Linac is a state of the art piece of technology that is set to redefine cancer treatment in Australia by accurately locating tumours during a radiation therapy treatment session in real time, offering greater potential of improving patient cancer treatment outcomes. The Ingham Institute will be the first medical research institute in Australia to work on the development of this unique technology, with the MRI-Linac to be housed in a Research Bunker as part of the Institute’s new research premises set for launch in 2012.

Setting a new benchmark in Australian medical research, the Institute’s new premises will comprise of a five storey purpose built research precinct that will contain the latest state of the art equipment and facilities, changing the way research is done in Australia.

Headlining with the MRI-Linac, another stand out feature of the new building will be the Clinical Skills Training and Simulation Centre, where the clinical

schools of UNSW, UWS and the Local Health District will provide state of the art training for clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals and students.

As a charitable organisation, the Ingham Institute has been fortunate enough to receive the long-running generous support of the Ingham family and Lady Mary Fairfax. However, like everything, it cannot continue to operate and achieve breakthroughs without consistent support and the Institute needs funds from the community to continue its important work.

Should you be interested in making a donation to the Ingham Institute, you can do so online at www.inghaminstitute.org.au/Donate.html.

For further information and to see how Bob Ingham’s dream has come to life in the Institute’s new documentary see www.inghaminstitute.org.au.

The Ingham Institute: A vision for Healthier Australia

Sixteen years ago Bob Ingham (AO) had a vision which has become reality. Enter the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, a medical research institute based in Sydney’s South West that strives to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

Pastry has been around for thousands of years. Early styles were quite rudimentary mixtures of flour and water. This style of mixture was used as a functional tool. Providing a sealed case it kept the moisture and flavour in whatever was being cooked, much in the same way as people use salt crusts or bake in clay today.

The taste, mouth feel and unique properties of the different pastries people use today were not considered.

Since 1934 Pampas has been providing Australian food service professionals with superior pastry products ranging from puff, shortcrust and fillo pastry.

Pampas has now extended the range introducing reduced fat puff pastry to food service. With 20% less fat the pastry is a crisp, light pastry consisting of thin layers of dough and margarine created by folding and re-folding. As the pastry bakes, steam is caught between the layers of dough and forces them to rise. As the baking continues, the steam evaporates and the margarine is absorbed, leaving a light, crisp, flaky pastry.

Making pastry from scratch is not always possible and what makes Pampas pastry unique is:

Pampas uses clean, pure flour when making ready rolled pastry. This makes certain that you receive products that have a smooth, clean and white appearance. No imperfections are visible which can occur as a result of using lower flour grades.

Premium vegetable margarines are added to create the quality doughs which are then rolled or folded to create the delicate flavours and textures that Pampas products are renowned for.

Pampas pastry products are legendary for their consistent quality, guaranteeing that whatever you are making Pampas will deliver you perfect pastry time and time again.
