TELEPHONE BOOK SEASON

At a time we scarcely use telephone books, they’re lying in ev-eryone’s yard. The Plaid Book showed up Monday. Tuesday came Frontier. Neighborhood mailboxes—all in a row—are littered with phone books wrapped in plastic bags, wet from rain. I don’t want one. I already use the one that our local newspaper company mailed in June, dry, inside my mailbox. I’ve used theirs since 1980 when I moved here. It used to be the only local directory.

The phone books are still on the mailboxes. Obviously the company intended a book for each address but didn’t want to pay the post office. The company pretends it’s thinking outside the box, but it’s really thinking about the bottom line. The more books they deliver, the more valuable they can claim ad space is. And they’re creating delivery jobs, right? Yes, but I feel sorry for the poor fellow whose job it is to deliver books for less than USPS, pennies per address.

A few years ago, I was in a local business when an aggressive sales-woman came to push advertising. The owner was already listed in another book, but felt like she needed to shell out to be in all.

Phone books can be handy when the Internet is down or to look up a list of, say, painters in the area. Historical phone books are handy when doing genealogical research. Will phone books disappear?

People are getting tired of so many. Companies rudely throw them around the neighborhood. Like me, my neighbors have left them dripping on the mailboxes. It’s a public nuisance called litter.

HE WORKS ALL THINGS FOR GOOD

I grew up in small town in CT. I wanted to know the meaning of life, so I used to ask people, especially older people. My reasoning was that after 50, 60, 70, 80 years on this planet, hopefully someone had it figured out. No one in my small town seemed to think they had, so when I got old enough for college, I went to the city. Aside from increasing my knowledge of how dangerous the world could be, I did not find the answers I was searching for there either. Then I tried an experimental college and was exposed to just about everything un-der the sun—I found a lot of things that were not the truth, were not the answer, but where was the answer?

I met a man who told me about Eastern Christianity. I felt that God had heard the cries of my heart. I was 17 years old. I visited a Convent in Boston and met a world I didn’t know existed. I found answers to my questions, peace in my confusion, meaning to life, and that the Truth is not a sentence, but a Person, the Creator of the Universe Who became a Man and walked among us.

Having found the Treasure hid in a field, I went and bought that field, I became a monastic so as not to lose this great Treasure Chest that God in His goodness had led me to. After about 17 years in the Con-vent I was told, “You are going West, you are going to Stanwood, a Convent is going to be started there.” Everything I thought I knew and wanted was in the Convent on the East Coast, or so I thought; but we had taken vows of obedience, so off I went.

The new Convent became the place where God taught me even mo-reso the meaning of life and the way to find happiness, the things I had always wanted, that I think probably most of us want. I learned to trust in Him. It wasn’t always easy, many times it was very hard, and it was especially hard because I didn’t fully get it, or how to do it. So all mixed up in trying to lean on God were also all of the human things—fears, chronic illness, mistakes, learning how to get up after falling, learning how to forgive after being taken, and most of all learning that God truly is Love. Pushing away the doubts and bringing that awareness, that reality, deep into my being, as He showed us over and over again that He was there, often through the good and God-loving people around us and helping us.

I came to understand that when God gave Adam and Eve a com-mandment in Paradise, it was because He loved them, and He was training their free will. Had He not loved them, He could have made them automatons, or He could have abandoned them to grow up willy-nilly. But instead, like parents also do, He provided them with so many good things, and then gave them a commandment too. When Adam and Eve chose not to follow God’s instructions, the conse-quence was not that God was angry with them, as we are sometimes taught in Western Christianity, but rather, that Adam and Eve took the care of themselves upon themselves. They, in effect, said to God, “We are big now, You don’t need to tell us what to do, we can figure it out for ourselves…..by ourselves, and listening to the voices of strangers who tell us that You lie to us, that You don’t have our best interest in mind.”

STRANGEBUT TRUE

In 1980, twins brothers separat-ed at birth ended up going to the same college.

When the news caught fire and

spread in media, the unthinkable happened and another person

called them with adoption papers that all three of them (himself

included) were triplets separated

at birth.

[email protected] www.TheCrabCracker.com

How often the enemy still whispers in our ears and screams over our tv sets that God does not care about us, that He does not love us, that if He loved us He would not allow this and this to happen… But we don’t realize that we ourselves each personally have the ability to get back to where we were, before we, as the human race, chose to take the care of ourselves upon ourselves, and chose to tell God, in ways great and small, that we don’t need Him.

About a year and half ago I heard the prayer, “Lord, fight this battle for me.” That became my new approach to everything. I was constantly confronted with things that were too hard for me, and because of that, I learned, little by little, that He wanted to fight my battles. That not only did I want to be taken care of, but that even moreso, He wanted to take care of us, of all of us, of each of us. When I started to use that prayer, and always ask God to keep us in His will, unto our souls’ salvation, marvelous things started to happen.

After 17 years of mysterious chronic illness, an answer was found. And, we were led to a smaller house to buy in order to focus on the heart of our life, the Jesus Prayer. And, God sent the perfect family, at the perfect time, to buy the Convent property and to be able to make the best use of the ten acres, which were more than we could handle. A short article can barely even begin to explain all of the marvelous things that God did simply because we asked Him to help us find His will, and we asked Him to fight our battles for us, knowing that we no longer wanted to take the care of ourselves upon ourselves. Yes, of course, we still do our due diligence, but in the passenger’s seat. And we are enjoying the ride so much more, because He is so much more wiser than we are. He even loves us more than we love ourselves, so even His care is so much better. And of course it goes without saying, that He is All Powerful and we are so limited. Life is never “easy” and there’s reasons for that, and yet life can be joyful and full of mean-ing and purpose and peace, even when we have struggles. When I watch Steve Hendrickson and his family start to bring their things over to our place for storage, even though we still live here until the end of the month, and when I know that we are going to be using the shipping room in the shop building through the end of the year, even though they will be living in the house by October 1st, I have to smile. How many real estate deals happen throughout the year? and in how many of them do the sellers and buyer work out a way to share the property for a few months, during the transition, that is best for all? We know this is God’s will, because only God could come up with something that beautiful.

If some young person, like myself at ten years old growing up in a small town in CT, were to ask me “What is the meaning of life?” I would say, “Know in your heart that God, the Creator of the universe, loves you so much, more than we could ever imagine, even much more than you love yourself. Lean on Him in everything, be in a con-stant dialogue with Him, ask Him to show you the Truth and His will for you, and take the time to listen. Be honest about this, and you will find peace, joy and the meaning of life.”

– Mother Thecla, Abbess. Convent of the Meeting of the Lord & Quiet Light Candles. We are open for the next two Saturdays (and winding down in October, so in theory also open in October).

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COLLEGEADMISSION

1. You can get in. Really.College admission isn’t as competitive as you might think. Fewer than 100 colleges in the U.S. are highly selective, which means they accept less than 25 percent of applicants. Close to 500 four-year colleges accept more than 75 percent of applicants. And open-ad-mission colleges accept all or most high school graduates.2. You are more than test scores.Colleges care most about the work you’ve done in high school. They look for students who have earned strong grades in challeng-ing courses. They also try to learn about your character by looking at what you do outside the classroom. Take advantage of oppor-tunities like the application essay and college interview to show a more complete picture of who you are.3. You are in charge. This is your big future—you’re in the driver’s seat. Stay focused on what’s important to you and what you want to get out of the col-lege experience. College planning can feel overwhelming at times, but if you take charge and stay focused on your goals, you can make it work for you.4. You are unique. You should base your choice on how well a college fits your needs. Don’t worry about how it’s ranked on a list or how famous it is. The effort you put in and the opportunities you take advantage of once you get there matter more than the college you go to. Once you graduate from college, your achievements and skills will matter most.5. You are not in this alone.Family, teachers and friends are a great resource. Discuss your plans to go to college with them and ask for help and advice. Make an ap-pointment with a school counselor or your principal to talk about the application process, colleges that will suit you and options for financial aid.

To learn more about applying to college, read https://bigfuture.col-legeboard.org/get-in/applying-101/applying-to-college-faqFor more about searching for a college that fits YOU, visit https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/find-colleges/how-to-find-your-col-lege-fit/how-to-find-a-college-that-fits-you

DISCOVER ARTIST FANNY Y. CORY

Fanny Y. Cory was born on October 17th, 1877. Her mother, Jessie, died of tuberculosis when Fanny was ten. Her sister, Agnes, who was five years older, contracted tuberculosis by caring for their mother and lived for the next ten years as an invalid. At the age of eighteen, Fanny attended the Metropolitan School of Fine Arts in New York City but left it after oneyear to provide for Agnes. Before the age of twenty, Fanny had become one of the best known illustrators in America. When Fanny was twenty, Agnes died in Fanny’s arms.

Fanny move to Montana to be near her brothers Jack and Bob who were mining for gold. In 1904, she married rancher Fred Cooney. They lived on an 1,800 acre ranch near Helena, Montana for the next fifty years. Fanny set aside her art career to raise their three chil-dren Sayre, Bob and Ted. Years later, Fanny took up her pen again to pay for their college education. By 1936, King Features Syndicate carried her cartoon strips “Sonnysayings” and Little Miss Muffet” na-tionwide.

During this time Fanny painted a series of exquisite paintings of fairies using watercolor which she considered her greatest work. After her death they were published as The Fairy Alphabet. In 1947, Fanny purchased a cottage on the southwest side of Camano to be near her daughter Sayre and her family. She moved permanently to Camano in 1952 where she continued her cartooning career with King FeaturesSyndicate until she retired in 1956. She died in 1972.

On Saturday, October 14th, from 10am – 9pm, Sunnyshore Studio will celebrate the 140th year anniversary of the birth of the ma-triarch of our family of artists. Fanny’s art will be showcased. A bi-ography on her life will be signed by author Toni McCarty. A film documentary will be shown throughout the day (11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, and 5:00pm).

An encore Saturday is October 21st, 10am-9pm. Please join us as we share the art and story of this remarkable woman.

HOLIDAY CERTIFICATES TO FAMILIESI know this is early in the season and yes I know that the children just went back to school, but the Stanwood Ambassadors for Housing Hope have set a large task for themselves and we need the commu-nity’s help to make it happen. We want to give each of the families at Lervick Family Village and Lincoln Hill a $50 gift certificate from QFC or Haggens for Thanksgiving and again for Christmas. There are 39 fam-ilies now in residence so that means 78 certificates are needed. These families were either homeless or near homeless when they came to Housing Hope and are learning how to get themselves back to be-ing self-sustaining. You can learn all about Housing Hope by visiting their website at Housinghope.org. If you would like to help us with this, please put a gift certificate of any amount in an envelope with your name and address, so we can send you a receipt, and drop the envelope off at the Stanwood, Camano Family Resource Center. The Ambassadors will be giving each child at the above locations a filled stocking for Christmas as we have done in the past, so watch for the next article about how you can adopt one of the stockings. We want to thank this community for it’s generosity in the past, it is because of this generosity that so many families have successfully moved on to a better life for themselves and their children. – Carol Jensen, 425-422-2244, [email protected].

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY - PORT SUSAN SNOW GOOSE & BIRDING FESTIVALDear Community Members, Conservationists and Chamber Members, over the past 12 years, the Port Susan Snow Goose and Birding Fes-tival has become one of the premier events in Stanwood-Camano and makes our area a go-to destination for Northwest Birders. Each February, over 500 birding and nature enthusiasts visit the Port Susan area to celebrate the Snow Geese and other shorebirds that frequent our region. Thanks to your generous support from our sponsors, the festival can boast that its impact to our community is significant. The 2017 Festival transitioned from dedicated volunteers of many years that poured their hearts into this event, back to the Stanwood Cham-ber of Commerce. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to gather all of the resources needed to implement the event. We are very pleased to tell you that the Port Susan Snow Goose and Birding Festival will continue in 2018. We have had many people in the community come forward and offer to lend a hand and ensure that the festival takes place. We are already coordinating and planning and the committee is very excited for the return of the festival. Please consider sponsoring this event. If you are interested please submit this sponsorship form to the Stanwood Chamber of Commerce no later than December 15th. Our goal is to provide a free event to highlight the activities in our area and bring tourists back again and again. Thank you for your consider-ation and all you do for the community!

Astronomy in the night sky over

What you can see when you look up into

the skies above Camano Island and Stanwood.

WHAT’S UPAstronomy in the night sky over Camano by William Maxwell

The night sky is full of shapes. Some shapes, like the Big Dipper, are very easy to recognize. Others, like Vulpecula (The Fox) require a rather vivid imagination. The constellation Cygnus, The Swan, not only belongs firmly in the first camp, but soars on outstretched wings along the glow of the Milky Way. To find it, look directly overhead as October skies darken. You will probably see the Northern Cross, which is contained in Cygnus, the“beak” the bottom of the cross and the wings the cross piece. Be sure to let twilight fall into darkness and have your eyes fully dark adjusted to catch the full beauty of the Swan sailing southerly alongthe Milky Way. What will you see? The constellation and Milky Way glow are read-ily apparent to the unaided eye, but with binoculars you will see the Milky Way separate into millions of stars and hints of glowing nebulosity. Cygnus is one of the richest areas of our night sky. One of the most beautiful double stars, Albireo, is the base of the cross. It is also home to expansive, although dim, glowing hydrogen clouds, star birth regions, the first ever confirmed black hole (Cygnus X-1), manyconfirmed planetary systems, and far beyond it in intergalactic space, The Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall, a giant galaxy fila-ment which is the largest known structure in the universe.

ROOT CELLARING

I have friends who spend their summers canning gallons and gal-lons of produce to eat all winter. I am too lazy and love my sum-mer too much to spend it canning vegetables, but I do like to eat locally-grown food all year round. You might think my reluctance means that during the cold, dark months, I’m stuck buying Chilean tomatoes and South African lettuce but lucky for me, there are al-ternatives. Root cellaring is the easiest way to preserve a whole lot of delicious fall produce like apples, carrots, winter squash, onions, potatoes, cabbage, and even some kinds of lettuce.

You don’t even need to live in a hundred year-old farmhouse with a built-in cellar from days gone by. Dedicated cellars are nice, but they aren’t magical. Fall plants that hold up to storage only need to be kept consistently cool enough to prevent rot, moist enough to prevent dehydration and ventilated enough to prevent mold- con-ditions you can create in a lot of different ways with a little ingenuity.

Do you have a basement or an unused corner in an unheated garage or pest-proof shed? If you do, you can easily adapt the space for win-ter food storage. Pack carrots in a crate filled with clean, damp wood shavings. Potatoes like similar conditions but also require darkness to prevent them sprouting. Depending on the variety, pumpkins and winter squash will keep for months with no special effort from you. Cure them at room temperature for two weeks, then spread them in a single layer somewhere slightly warmer than where you keep the carrots and potatoes. Ensure that the stem is left on the plant, and you maybe still have delicious squash in March. Apples from long-keeping varieties kept cool, well ventilated and free from frost can last through New Year’s.

Root cellars are simple, electricity-free devices for storing your gar-den’s bounty. Give it a try this year, and you, too, may find your old pressure canner gathering dust while you eat well all winter.

AMAZON HQ2

By now you’ve heard the news: Amazon has announced plans to create a second headquarters outside Seattle and Gomorrah’s grid-locked environs. Needless to say this has set off a bidding frenzy for who can offer the most tax reductions, the best qualified per-sonnel and the most advantageous living conditions for Amazon’s elite management team bent on taking over the entire world.

And what major metropolitan city in this country or somewhere else wouldn’t want to claim that citadel of power as their own economic engine? Who wouldn’t want property values to shoot through the roof in the first year, doubling or even tripling the price of a modest home and swelling the tax base? Who wouldn’t want rental prices doing the same, forcing the undesirable poor to move somewhere far outside their upscale neighborhoods? And who wouldn’t want to jumpstart their transportation system by inject-ing thousands upon thousands of Amazonians bent on reaching headquarters by train, by bus, by self-driving automobiles? No, the bids and the proposals are already pouring in the very first week of the retailing Godzilla’s announcement.

Here on the South End we have our own pitch, one we think may just carry the day. Admittedly we don’t have much transportation infrastructure, just a two lane blacktop that loops around the end of the island. And housing opportunities are, well, a bit Spartan and okay, mostly non-existent. Plus, qualified personnel and high tech training programs are what we could charitably call nascent, but actually are fairly non-existent, although Stanwood is building a fine new high school . I guess we could offer tax incentives. No B&O taxes, possibly forever. And gifts for the executives. You know, free crab. All the crab they can eat. Anytime they want it. We’ll even crack it for them.

What we really have to offer --- and we think they’ll see the wisdom in this --- is the chance to start at Ground Level, no impediments, no necessity to sweep aside the existing infrastructures, just a Fresh Clean Start. Sounds good to us too! Rome wasn’t built in a day, but Amazonia? We think you could do it here on the blank slate of the South End. Think about it, but not too long. Tyee Store may be expanding soon, pretty tough competition down here, and they may not roll over the way Whole Foods did, Mr. Bezos.

BUYING EXPERIENCES Some of the most profound messages come about while sharing life stories. Let’s just say, my wife and I were on a boat with some kind and adventurous people and...stories happened. A gentleman spoke up, “When it comes to buying things, I try to buy experiences, not stuff.” There was a reflective moment and then all of us eagerly agreed. Our conversations reflect the things that are important to us. Sure, sometimes we talk about the material things we possess, but quality conversation always shifts to what is more meaningful. The experi-ences we’ve earned are what makes each person truly remarkable. Certainly you have had tremendous experiences that did not need to be bought, but I hope you got that gentleman’s point. If you think that more material things in your life will bring you happiness, you will drive your resources and energy to getting more stuff. On the other hand, if you value experiences with the ones you love and de-sire to meet new and interesting people, you will find that you use resources and energies in that pursuit. There is one important aspect to gaining quality experiences in life. It helps to be in good health. Fortunately, gaining optimal personal health is also one of the most fulfilling experiences you can have. Most Americans struggle with health problems that can be over-come through a modest investment in resources and energy. It doesn’t cost more to eat right, especially if eating right means eating and drinking less. Exercise is so lacking in most people’s lives, their potential experi-ences are drastically limited, just due to the old axiom, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” Purposeful movement every day is important. Walking is great. Valuable life experiences do not come via watching TV, but they do show up while you are striving to be more active. Proper posture is essential for stellar health throughout your life. If you don’t think posture is important, visit an assisted living com-plex. The folks climbing on the bus for the next event are not the youngest; they’re the ones that have maintained relatively good joint function and posture. You cannot maintain stress for long periods of time without break-ing down your mind or body. Reducing stress is an active process. It will not simply go away. Fortunately eating right and exercise will help with managing stress. You will find that your money, resources and energy will go a long way when you use it to improve your health and gain positive life ex-periences. Getting more stuff is always a direction some people will choose, but maybe buying experiences is a better way to go.

The Stanwood Area Histor-ical Society

asks, “Did You Know?”

Excerpts taken from the

“Stanwood Story”, written

for theStanwood News

by Alice Essex.

The turn of the century brought a turn of events to Stanwood. Busi-ness was flourishing along the Stilly. Hard times were outdated, the creamery brought fame and fortune, the cannery had also increased payrolls and villagers were in optimistic mood. Cultural, musical and sports events were gaining enthusiasm. Open-air band concerts were held on Market Street, baseball was the favorite sport, agricultural groups were coming to the fore front, the town’s newspaper had been able to continue publication for three consecutive years and incorpo-ration had become the big issue before the people. In the “good old days,” successful publication of a newspaper in Stan-wood was apparently a major accomplishment, as the “Weekly Press,” which started in 1897, was the second paper to come to town after the collapse of the “Stillaguamish Times” in 1889. The “Post” had preceded it in 1890 under the ownership of Dwight and F. A. Stevens. The Stevens partners had brought a small print-ing plant to Stanwood and the paper eked out a meager existence for a year, then gave up. The plant was then taken over by Pearson, Stockbridge, and Meyer but, because of the depression, no presses hummed until March 1, 1897, when the “Weekly Press” put out its first issue. The “Press continued for five years under various editors, and to it went the laurels for promoting incorporation. The town was platted in 1899, at the instigation of the “Press”, and four years later…September 29, 1903…Stanwood became an incor-porated town, fourth class. The growing up process from first white man to city fathers had taken 39 years, so the election of city officers was a happy and special event. During the process of incorporation, the newspaper also underwent changes. A new publishing firm had been initiated under the name of Lane & Clemens and the paper had been renamed “Stanwood Tidings.” H. A. Clemens was the new editor and manager and the first issue was published in June 1903. Says on historical account— “The Tidings was a meritorious little six-column, four-page paper, all home printed. It caught the public fancy and thrived for many years.” 1903 also brought George M. Mitchell to Stanwood and he began his law practice here that same year. He was the first attorney to establish an office in the area and almost immediately became the town’s legal advisor. In the months after incorporation Stanwood flourished as never be-fore, and within a year, the town’s valuation had almost doubled to $49,470. Taxes levied at 10 cents on the dollar brought a revenue of $404.70; the town had spent $2,600 and enjoyed an income of $2,200. By fall 1904, more houses were needed for renters and the pub-lic-spirited “Tidings” made this editorial comment in its issue of Oc-tober 7: “There are no vacant houses that are fit to live in, and while this con-dition exists, it cannot be expected that our population will increase as it should. If some enterprising company, or individual, would put up a few dwellings, the present congestion would be relieved and at the same time, a good return would come from the money invested. “We see no reason why picket fences with half the pickets gone, old Smokey buildings with windows knocked out and fit only for the abode of owls and rubbish, should be permitted in the business part of town. Why not get together and clean up these places as a matter of public duty.” The next issue of the “Tidings” flaunts a headline—Stanwood Onward,” which apparently reflected the mood of the peo-ple during the early 1900’s.

about it.

A DAY AT THE RACES I was not sure what to expect when a buddy of mine invited me to join him for drag racing. Contrary to my assumptions, there were very few men sprinting in high heels, makeup and wigs. No, it turns out that drag racing is a completely different genre of entertainment. If you’re not familiar with this sport, let me cover the basics. The average race takes less time to finish than it takes to finish the sentence, “the average race takes less time to finish than it takes to finish this sentence.” The fastest dragsters hurtle down a 1,000-foot track in under four seconds. During one heat I sneezed, causing me to completely miss the race. My wife does not understand drag racing at all – much the same way that I don’t understand my wife. You see, this sport is all about three things: insanely fast cars, thunderously loud engines that could burst your ear drums, and sexy young women in hot pants and knee-high kinky boots, hanging around the starting line, pretending to serve a purpose. Typically, two racers are pitted against each other in a sprint. Sadly, I did not witness a single car veer off the track into the wall. Several classes of vehicles were competing: top fuel dragsters (the long skinny ones), funny cars (imagine a Chevy Camaro plastered bonnet to boot with sponsors’ logos), something called pro stock, and even motorcy-cles. I don’t want to sound critical, but whoever came up with these de-signs never owned a minivan. First, none of them has any trunk space. And don’t let the “funny cars” fool you. They may look like they have a trunk, but it’s all fake. The cabs are incredibly cramped. There’s no way I could take my family camping in one of these. They don’t even come with a GPS, let alone a decent sound system. They really cut corners in their design. Every driver has a pit crew of about ten helpers and a blonde babe in short pants, tall boots and a tiara. Immediately before the race, they swarm around the vehicle, looking under the hood, inflating the tires and checking her nails. Surprisingly, none of them offered to wash the windshield or check the oil. Seems like you just can’t get good pit crew help these days. If you plan to go to a drag racing event, a couple suggestions: First, bring ear plugs - for you and your nine-month old. The couple next to us brought their infant to this event, but didn’t think to equip him with ear plugs. It only took seven heats for them to realize that Child Protective Services might not look kindly on them causing their child to go deaf before he turned one. Secondly, don’t expect to have a heart-to-heart talk during this out-ing. Suggestions for possible conversation topics include: “What did you say?” and “Sorry, you’ll have to scream louder.” This is also an ex-cellent venue at which to break up with your girlfriend. There is every chance that when you tell her it’s over and you’ve found someone new, she won’t have any clue what just happened. As my buddy and I headed home after a fun day of watching blis-teringly fast death traps, I imagined what it might be like to be behind the wheel of one of those top fuel dragsters with a 10,000-horsepow-er engine, reaching speeds upwards of 320 miles in 3.8 seconds. So, I floored the gas on my Hyundai Santa Fe. Within 20 seconds, I was hur-tling down the interstate at 88 mph. I felt a rush of adrenaline. That’s when I saw the cop car and slammed on the brakes. That was a close call. So much for my racing dreams. But at least my car has a GPS and an awesome sound system.
