CRAFTING AN EFFECTIVE

FOR INVESTORS

WHAT IS AN ELEVATOR PITCH?

In general an elevator pitch is based around a simple challenge; if you were fated to be in an elevator with your ideal prospect, how would you describe your business and you proposition to them in the time it took for the elevator to reach their destination.

HOW SHOULD AN ELEVATOR PITCH BREAK DOWN?

So just what should you be trying to cram into these all important, but fleeting, seconds?

While no one can tell you exactly what to write that captures the essence of your business proposition, there are some elements that all successful examples of this rather delicate business art have in common:

A HOOKYou have to have something right at the beginning of your pitch that will instantly make your audience sit up and listen. A state-ment or a question is usually very effective.

THE BODY

The body of your pitch should be no more than around 200 words long as it has to read quickly both visually and when spoken aloud.

A PREDICTION

Just what are you proposing to do? How will your business solve a problem or meet a need? You can go into greater detail later on in your presentation but it is essential that you address this aspect here as well.

“Scrummy Treats will be able to beat out the competition because our yogurts are tasty and nutritious. The difference is that we use only totally gluten free ingredients that contain live cultures that are believed to aid digestion and improve stamina.

Scrummy Treats founder Jane Bloggs has been eating it for over a decade and cred-its her ability to run ten marathons a year at 40 to it. As more people discover our yogurt’s benefits its popularity will soar!”

EXAMPLEEXAMPLE“People are making efforts to eat a healthier diet but few can resist the lure of a sweet treat and so are actively seek-ing out healthy, convenient alternatives. Frozen low fat yogurt has been, for the last four years, the fastest growing offering in the snack food industry with a year on year growth rate of 18%.”
