If this Craftsman Lawn Mower fails due to manufacturer defects in material or

workmanship within two years from the date of purchase, return it to any Sears store,Parts & Repair Center or other Craftsman outlet for free repair (or replacement if repairproves impossible).

This warranty applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase if this Lawn Mower isever used for commercial or rental purposes.

This warranty does not cover:

• Expendable items that become worn during normal use, such as rotary mowerblades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.

• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bentcrackshafts and the failure to assemble, operate or maintain this Lawn Moweraccording to all supplied product instructions.

This warranty applies only while this product is used in the United States.

I. GENERAL OPERATION

• Read, understand, and follow allinstructions on the machine and in themanual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, to oper-ate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by blade.

• Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

• Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear.

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards.

• Never direct discharged material towardanyone. Avoid discharging materialagainst a wall or obstruction. Materialmay richochet back toward the opera-tor. Stop the blade when crossing gravelsurfaces.

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions forproper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer.

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaning themower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and wait untilthe blade comes to complete stop beforeremoving grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle; walk, never run.

• Disengage the self-propelled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers so

equipped before starting the engine.• If the equipment should start to vibrate

abnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

• Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when operatingmower.

II. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slip &fall accidents which can result in severe in-jury. All slopes require extra caution. If youfeel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it.DO:

• Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

III. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machineand the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.

• Keep children out of the trimming areaand under the watchful care of another

responsible adult.• Be alert and turn machine off if children

enter the area.• Before and while walking backwards,

look behind and down for small children.• Never allow children to operate the ma-

chine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE

Use extreme care in handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and thevapors are explosive.• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes

and other sources of ignition.• Use only an approved container.• Never remove gas cap or add fuel with

the engine running. Allow engine to coolbefore refueling.

• Never refuel the machine indoors.• Never store the machine or fuel contain-

er where there is an open flame, sparkor pilot light such as a water heater or onother appliances.

• Neverfill containersinsidea vehicle,ona truck or trailer bedwitha plasticliner.Always placecontainerson the groundawayfrom yourvehiclebeforefilling.

• Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck or trailerand refuel it on theground. If this is notpossible,thenrefuelsuchequipmentwith a portablecontainer,ratherthan from a gasolinedispensernozzle.

• Keepthe nozzle in contactwith the rimof the fuel tank or containeropeningatall times untilfueling iscomplete. Donot usea nozzlelock-opendevice.

• If fuel isspilled onclothing,changeclothingimmediately.

• Neveroverfillfuel tank. Replacegascapand tightensecurely.

V. GENERAL SERVICE• Neverruna machineinsidea closed

area.• Nevermakeadjustmentsor repairswith

theengine (motor)running.Disconnectthesparkplugwire,and keepthewireawayfromthe plugto preventaccidentalstarting.

• Keepnutsand bolts,especiallybladeattachmentbolts, tight and keepequip-mentin goodcondition.

• Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheir properoperationregularly.

• Keepmachinefree of grass, leaves,orotherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanoil or fuelspillage.Allow machineto coolbeforestoring.

• Stopand inspectthe equipmentif youstrikean object.Repair,if necessary,beforerestarting.

• Neverattemptto makewheelheightadjustmentswhile theengine is running.

• Grasscatchercomponentsaresubjectto wear, damage,anddeterioration,whichcouldexposemovingpartsorallowobjectsto be thrown.Frequentlycheckcomponentsand replacewithmanufacturer'srecommendedparts,when necessary.

• Mowerbladesare sharpand cancut.Wrapthe blade(s)orwear gloves,anduseextra cautionwhenservicingthem.

• Donot changethe enginegovernorset-tingor overspeedthe engine.

• Maintainor replacesafetyand instruc-tion labels,as necessary.

AWARNING: This lawn mower is equipped with an internal combustion engine andshould not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered orgrass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a sparkarrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, itshould be maintained in effective working order by the operator.In the state of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the CaliforniaPublic Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply onfederal lands. Read these instructions and this manual inits entirety before you attempt to assembleor operate your new lawn mower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower is shippedWITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE in the

engine.Your new lawn mower has been assem-

bled at the factory with the exception ofthose parts left unassembled for shippingpurposes. To ensure safe and properoperation of your lawn mower, all partsand hardware you assemble must be tight-ened securely. Use the correct tools asnecessary to ensure proper tightness. Allparts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc.,necessary to complete the assembly havebeen placed in the parts bag.

TO REMOVE MOWER FROM

1. Remove loose parts included withmower.

2. Cut down two end corners of carton

and lay end panel down flat.3. Remove all packing materials except

padding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton and

check carton thoroughly for additionalloose parts.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR MOWERTO UNFOLD HANDLE

IMPORTANT: Unfold handle carefully soas not to pinch or damage control cables.1. Raise handles until lower handle sec-

tion locks into place in mowing posi-tion.

2. Remove protective padding, raise up-per handle section into place on lowerhandle and tighten both handle knobs.

3. Remove handle padding holdingoperator presence control bar to upperhandle.

Your lawn mower handle can be adjustedfor your mowing comfort. Refer to "AD-JUST HANDLE" in the Service and Adjust-ments section of this manual.

1. Put grass catcher frame into grass bagwith rigid part of bag on the bottom.Make sure the frame handle is outsideof the bag top.

2. Slip vinyl bindings over frame.NOTE: If vinyl bindings are too stiff, holdthem in warm water for a few minutes. If

bag gets wet, let it dry before using.

TO PREPARE BATTERY

NOTE: Your battery must be chargedbefore you can start your lawn mower.1. Connect battery charger connector

(male) to harness connector (female).2. Plug battery charger into 110 volt A.C.

outlet.

3. Leave battery charger connected for24 hours before starting your enginefor the first time.

4. After charging, disconnect harnessconnector (female) from battery char-ger connector (male).

Connect your battery charger to chargebattery after each use.IMPORTANT: The engine will not re-charge your battery.At the end of the mowing season thebattery should be charged for 48 hours to,_otect the battery during winter storage.

HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWER

ENGINE SPEED

Engine speed was set at the factory foroptimum performance. It is not adjustable.

ENGINE ZONE CONTROL

_I_CAUTION: Federal regulations requirean engine control to be installed on thislawn mower in order to minimize the riskof blade contact injury. Do not underany circumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator control. The bladeturns when the engine is running.• Your lawn mower is equipped with an

operator presence control bar whichrequires the operator to be positionedbehind the lawn mower handle to start

and operate the lawn mower.

DRIVE CONTROL

• Self-propelling is controlled by hold-ing the operator presence control bardown to the handle and pulling the drivecontrol bar up to the handle. The closerto the handle the bar is pulled, the fasterthe unit will travel.

• Forward motion will stop when eitherthe operator presence control bar ordrive control bar are released. To stopforward motion without stopping engine,release the drive control bar only. Holdoperator presence control bar downagainst handle to continue mowingwithout self-propelling

NOTE: If after releasing the drive controlthe mower will not roll backwards, pushthe mower forward slightly to disengagedrive wheels.• To keep drive control engaged when

turning corners, push down on thehandle to lift the front wheels off the

ground while turning lawn mower.

Over time, the drive control system maybecome "loose", resulting in decreasedspeed. There are holes in the drivecontrol housing to increase tension on thedrive cable. Proceed as follows:

1. Turn unit off and disconnect spark plugwire from spark plug.

2. Loosen nut, move drive control hous-ing down handle to the next hole andretighten nut.

3. Operate mower to test drive speed.4. If condition fails to improve after the

above steps (forward speed remainsthe same), your drive belt is worn andshould be replaced.

TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT

Raise wheels for low cut and lower wheelsfor high cut, adjust cutting height to suityour requirements. Medium position isbest for most lawns.• To change cutting height, squeeze ad-

juster lever toward wheel. Move wheelup or down to suit your requirements.Be sure all wheels are in the same set-

ting.NOTE: Adjuster is properly positionedwhen plate tab inserts into hole in lever.Also, 9-position adjusters (if so equipped)allow lever to be positioned between theplate tabs.

2. Remove grass catcher with clippingsfrom under lawn mower handle.

3. Empty clippings from bag.NOTE: Do not drag the bag when empty-ing; it will cause unnecessary wear.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

ADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.A CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke heavily from the muffleron startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level.2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour the entire containerdown the oil fill spout into the engine.

NOTE: Initial oil fill requires only 18 oz.due to residual oil in engine from themanufacturers 100% quality testing. Whenchanging oil you may need 20 oz.4. Insert and tighten dipstick.IMPORTANT:• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.• Change the oil after every 25 hours of

operation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions. See "TOCHANGE ENGINE OIL" in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

ADD GASOLINE

• Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuel fresh-ness.

A CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.A_, CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels

(called gasohol or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Empty the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

TO STOP ENGINE

• To stop engine, release operator pres-ence control bar.

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of the productand should be considered normal.

1. To start a cold engine, push primerthree (3) times before trying to start.Use a firm push. This step is not usu-ally necessary when starting an enginewhich has already run for a few minutes.

2. Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and turn the start

key.IMPORTANT: Do not crank engine morethan five continous seconds between eachtime you try to start. Wait 5 to 10 secondsbetween each attempt.• To start engine using the rope starter,

follow the steps above. Exchange theuse of the starter rope for start key.Pull starter handle quickly. Do not allowstarter rope to snap back.

NOTE: In cooler weather it may be neces-sary to repeat priming steps. In warmerweather over priming may cause floodingand engine will not start. If you do floodengine wait a few minutes before at-tempting to start and do not repeat primingsteps.

MOWING TIPS

A& CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher

blade attachments on your mower. Suchattachments are hazardous, will damageyour mower and could void your warranty.• Under certain conditions, such as very

tall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushing effortand to keep from overloading the engineand leaving clumps of grass clippings.It may also be necessary to reduceground speed and/or run the lawnmower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers canbecome filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers will collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher offwith water and let dry before using.

• Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See "CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.

• The special mulching blade will recutthe grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quickly toprovide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried, yet the newly cut area will not beexposed to direct sunlight.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrownit will be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. TO SHARPEN BLADENOTE: We do not recommend sharpeningthe blade - but if you do, be sure the bladeis balanced. Care should be taken to keepthe blade balanced. An unbalanced bladewill

cause eventual damage to mower or engine.• The blade can be sharpened with a file

or on a grinding wheel. Do not attemptto sharpen while on the mower.

• To check blade balance, drive a nail intoa beam or wall. Leave about one inch ofthe straight nail exposed. Place centerhole of blade over the head of the nail.If blade is balanced, it should remain ina horizontal position. If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

GRASS CATCHER

• The grass catcher may be hosed withwater, but must be dry when used.

• Check your grass catcher often for dam-age or deterioration. Through normaluse it will wear. If catcher needs replac-ing, replace only with approved replace-ment catcher shown in the Repair Partssection of this manual. Give the lawnmower model number when ordering.

GEAR CASE

• To keep your drive system workingproperly, the gear case and area aroundthe drive should be kept clean and freeof trash build-up. Clean under the drivecover twice a season.

The gear case is filled with lubricant to theproper level at the factory. The only timethe lubricant needs attention is if servicehas been performed on the gear case.If lubricant is required, use only TexacoStarplex Premium 1 Grease, Part No.750369. Do not substitute.

ENGINELU BRICATION

Use only high quality detergent oil rated withAPI service classification SG-SL Select the

oil's SAE viscosity grade according to yourexpected operating temperature.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower to drainoil, empty fuel tank by running engine untilfuel tank is empty.1. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark

plug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

2. Remove engine oil cap; lay aside on aclean surface.

3. Tip lawn mower on its side as shownand drain oil into a suitable container.Rock lawn mower back and forth to re-

move any oil trapped inside of engine.

4. Wipe off any spilled oil from lawnmower or side of engine.

5. Slowly pour oil down the oil fill spout,stopping every few ounces to check theoil level with the dipstick.

6. Stop adding oil when you reach theFULL mark on the dipstick. Wait aminute to allow oil to settle.

7. Continue adding small amounts of oil,rechecking the dipstick until oil levelsettles at FULL. DO NOT overfill, or

engine will smoke heavily from themuffler on startup.

8. Always be sure to retighten oil dipstickbefore starting engine.

9. Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug.AIR FILTER

Your engine will not run properly andmay be damaged by using a dirty airfilter. Replace the air filter cartridge every100 hours of operation or every season,whichever occurs first. Service air cleaner

more often under dusty conditions.

1. Loosen screw and tilt cover to remove.2. Carefully remove cartridge.3. Clean by gently tapping on a flat sur-

REAR DEFLECTOR

The rear deflector, attached between therear wheels of your mower, is provided tominimize the possibility that objects willbe thrown out of the rear of the mower

into the operator mowing position. If thedeflector becomes damaged, it should bereplaced.

TO REMOVE DRIVE BELT

1. Remove drive cover.2. Remove belt from gearcase pulley by

pushing down on arm and rolling beltoff pulley.

3. Turn lawn mower on its side with airfilter and carburetor down.

4. Remove blade, engine pulley anddebris shield.

5. Remove engine pulley and belt fromdebris shield.

TO REPLACE DRIVE BELT

1. Place new drive belt in engine pulleyand belt retainer of debris shield.

2. Route the other end of the new drivebelt through hole in housing.

3. Reinstall debris shield.4. Reinstall blade.

5. Return mower to upright position.6. Push down on arm, install new belt on

ENGINE

ENGINE SPEEDYour engine speed has been factory set.Do not attempt to increase engine speedor it may result in personal injury. If youbelieve that engine is running too fast ortoo slow, take your mower to a Sears orother qualified service center for repairand adjustment.CARBURETOR

Your carburetor is not adjustable. If yourengine does not operate properly dueto suspected carburetor problems, takeyour lawn mower to a Sears or otherqualified service center for repair and/oradjustment.IMPORTANT: Never tamper with theengine governor, which is factory set forproper engine speed. Overspeedingthe engine above the factory high speedsetting can be dangerous. If you thinkthe engine-governed high speed needsadjusting, contact a Sears or otherqualified service center, which has properequipment and experience to make anynecessary adjustments.

Immediately prepare your lawn mower forstorage at the end of the season or if theunit will not be used for 30 days or more.

LAWN MOWERWhen lawn mower is to be stored for a

• Detenga la cuchilla o las cuchillas cuandocruce por calzadas, calles o caminos degrava.

• Parar el motor cada vez que se abandona elaparato, antes de limpiar la segadora o deremover residuos del tubo.

• Apagar el motor y esperar hasta que lascuchillas esten completamente paradasantes de remover el receptor de hierba.

• Segar solamente con luz del dia o con unabuena luz artificial.

• No opere la maquina bajo la influencia delalcohol o de las drogas.

• Nunca opere la maquina cuando la hierbaeste mojada. AsegQrese siempre de tenerbuena tracci6n en sus pies; mantenga elmango firmemente y camine; nunca corra.

• Desconectar el mecanismo de propulsionaut6noma o el embrague de transmision enlas segadoras que Io tienen antes de poneren marcha el motor.

• Si el equipo empezara a vibrar de unamanera anormal, pare el motor y revise deinmediato para averiguar la causa. General-mente la vibracion suele indicar que existealguna averia.

• Siempre use gafas de seguridad o anteojoscon protecci6n lateral cuando opere la sega-dora.

II. OPERACION SOBRE LAS CUESTASLos accidentes ocurren con mas frecuencia enlas cuestas. Estos accidentes ocurren debido aresbaladas o caidas, las cuales pueden resultaren graves lesiones. Operar la recortadora encuestas requiere mayor concentraci6n. Si sesiente inseguro en una cuesta, no la recorte.HACER:• Puede recortar a traves de la superficie de

la cuesta, nunca hacia arriba y hacia abajo.Proceda con extrema precaucion cuandocambie de direcci6n en las cuestas.

• Renueva todos los objetos extra5os, talescomo guijarros, ramas, etc.

• Debe prestar atencion a hoyos, baches oprotuberancias. Recuerde que la hierba altapuede esconder obstaculos.

NO HACER:• No recorte cerca de pendientes, zanjas o

terraplenes. El operador puede perder latraccion en los pies o el equilibrio.

• No recorte cuestas demasiado inclinadas.• No recorte en hierba mojada. La reduccion

en la traccion de la pisada puede causarresbalones.

III. NINOSSe pueden producir accidentes tragicos si eloperador no presta atenci6n a la presenciade los ni5os. A menudo, los ni5os se sientenatraidos por la maquina y por la actividad dela siega. Nunca suponga que los niSos van apermanecer en el mismo lugar donde los viopor Qltima vez.• Mantenga a los ni5os alejados del area de

la siega y bajo el cuidado estricto de otrapersona adulta responsable.

• Este alerta y apague la maquina si hay niSosque entran al area.

• Antes y cuando este retrocediendo, mirehacia atras y hacia abajo para verificar si hayniSos peque5os.

• Nunca permita que los ni5os operen la ma-quina.

• Tenga un cuidado extra cuando se acerquea esquinas donde no hay visibilidad, a losarbustos, _lrboles u otros objetos que puedeninterferir con su linea de vision.

IV. MANEJO SEGURO DE GASOLINAUsar mucha atenci6n cuando se maneja gaso-lina. La gasolina es extremamente inflamable ylos vapores son explosivos.• Apagar todos los cigarrillos, cigarros, pipas y

otras fuentes de ignicion.• Usar solo un contenedor apropiado.• Nunca quitar el tap6n de la gasolina o a_adir

carburante con el motor en marcha. Esperarque el motor se enfrie antes de repostar lagasolina.

• Nunca repostar la maquina al interior de unlocal.

• Nunca guardar la maquina o el contenedorde gasolina donde hay una llama abierta,chispa o luz piloto como una caldera u otrosdispositivos.

• Nunca Ilenar contenedores en un vehiculo,en un cami6n o caravana con un forro deplastico. Colocar siempre los contenedoresen el suelo lejos de su vehiculo antes deIlenar.

• Quitar equipos que funcionan con gasolinadel camion o caravana y repostar en el suelo.Si esto no es posible, repostar dicho equipocon un contenedor portatil, mas bien que conuna tobera de gasolina.

• Mantener la tobera en contacto con el bordodel deposito de carburante o de la aperturadel contenedor siempre hasta terminar elabastecimiento. No usar un dispositivo decierre-apertura de la tobera.

• Si el carburante cae en la ropa que se Ileva,cambiarsela inmediatamente.

• Nunca Ilenar en exceso el dep6sito decarburante. Colocar el tap6n de la gasolina yapretar de modo seguro.

V. SERVICIO• Nunca haga funcionar una maquina dentro

de un area cerrada.• Nunca haga ajustes o reparaciones mientras

el motor este en marcha. Desconecte elcable de la bujia, y mantengalo a ciertadistancia de esta para prevenir un arranqueaccidental.

• Mantenga las tuercas y los pernos, espe-cialmente los pernos del accesorio de lacuchilla, apretados y mantenga el equipo enbuenas condiciones.

• Nunca manipule de forma indebida losdispositivos de seguridad. Controle regular-mente su funcionamiento correcto.

• Mantenga la maquina libre de hierba, hojasu otras acumulaciones de desperdicio.Limpie los derrames de aceite o combustible.Permita que la maquina se enfrie antes dealmacenarla.

• Pare e inspeccione el equipo si le pega a unobjeto. Reparelo, si es necesario, antes dehacerlo arrancar.

• En ningQn caso hay que regular la altura delas ruedas mientras el motor esta en marcha.

• Los componentes del receptor de la hierbavan sujetos a desgaste, daSos y deterioro,que pueden exponer las partes en mov-imiento o permitir que objetos sean dispara-dos. Controlar frecuentemente y cuando seanecesario sustituir con partes aconsejadaspor el fabricante.

• Las cuchillas de la segadora estan afiladasy pueden cortar. Cubrir las hojas o Ilevarguantes, y utilizar precauciones especialescuando se efectQa mantenimiento sobre lasmismas.

• No cambie el ajuste del regulador del motorni exceda su velocidad.

• Mantener o sustituir las etiquetas deseguridad e instrucciones, cuando seanecesario.

_ADVERTENCIA: Este segadora viene equipado con un motor de combustion interna y no sedebe usar sobre, o cerca, de un terreno no desarrollado cubierto de bosques, de arbustos o decesped, o menos que el sistema de escape del motor venga equipado con un amortiguador dechispas que cumpla con las leyes locales o estatales (si existen). Si se usa un amortiguador dechispas, el operador debe mantenerlo en condiciones de trabajo eficientes.En el estado de California, la ley exige Io anterior (Seccion 4442 del "California Public Re-sources Code"). Lea estas instrucciones y este manual comple-tamente antes de tratar de montar u operar susegadora nueva.IMPORTANTE: Este cortacesped viene SINACEITE O GASOLtNA en el motor.

Su segadora nueva ha sido montada en lafabrica con la excepci6n de aquellas partes quese dejaron sin montar por razones de envio.Todas las partes como las tuercas, las arande-las, los pernos, etc., que son necesarias paracompletar el montaje han sido colocadas en labolsa de partes. Para asegurarse que su sega-dora funcione en forma segura y adecuada,todas las partes y los articulos de ferreteda quese monten tienen que ser apretados segura-mente. Use las herramientas correctas, comosea necesario, para asegurar que se aprietenadecuadamente.

PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CARTON1. Remueva las partes sueltas que se incluyen

con la segadora.2. Corte las dos esquinas de los extremos

de la caja de cart6n y tienda el panel delextremo piano.

3. Remueva todo el material de empaque, ex-cepto la cuba entre el mango superior y elinferior, y la cuba que sujeta la barra de loscontrol que exige la presencia del operadorjunto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cart6n y revisela cuidadosamentepara verificar si todavia quedan partessueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORA

PARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado para no pellizcar o daSar loscables de control.1. Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n

del mango inferior se asegure en su lugar,en la posici6n para segar.

2. Remueva la cuba protectora, levante la sec-ci6n del mango superior hasta su lugar enel mango inferior, y apriete ambas manillasdel mango.

3. Remueva la cuba del mango que sujeta labarra de los control que exige la presenciadel operador junto con el mango superior.

El mango de la segadora puede ajustarsesegQn le acomode para segar. Refierase a"AJUSTE DEL MANGO" en la seccion deServicio y Ajustes de este manual.

PARA MONTAR EL RECOGEDOR DECO:SPED1. Ponga el bastidor del recogedor de cesped

en la bolsa del cesped con la parte rigidade la bolsa en la parte inferior. AsegQreseque el mango del bastidor este en el exte-rior de la parte superior de la bolsa.

2. Deslice los sujetadores de vinilo sobre elbastidor.

AVlSO: Si los sujetadores de vinilo estan muyduros, metalos en agua caliente por algunosminutos. Si se moja la bolsa, dejela que seseque antes de usarla.

exigen que se instale un control para el motoren esta segadora para reducir a un minimo elriesgo de lesionarse debido al contacto con lacuchilla. Por ning0n motivo trate de eliminarla funcion del control del operador. La cuchillagira cuando el motor esta funcionando.• Su segadora viene equipada con una barra

de controles que exigen la presencia deloperador, Io que requiere que el operadoreste detras del mango de la segadora parahacerla arrancar y operarla.

CONTROL DE LA IMPULSION• La autopropulsion se controla manteniendo

la palanca de mando operador presenteabajo hacia el mango y tirando la barra deaccionamiento hasta la mango. Cuanto mascercano se tira la barra hacia el mango, masrapida ira la unidad.

• El movimiento hacia adelante se detienecuando sea la palanca de mando operadorpresente o la barra de accionamiento sesueltan. Para detener el movimiento haciaadelante sin apagar el motor, soltar s61o labarra de accionamiento. Mantener la palancade mando operador presente abajo contra elmango para continuar a cortar sin autopro-pulsion.

AVlSO: Si despues haber desenganchadode la palanca de control, la segadora no rodahacia atras, empuje la segadora un poco haciaadelante para desenganchar las ruedas de laimpulsion.• Para mantener el mando conectado cuando

se da la vuelta a una esquina, empujar elmango para levantar las ruedas delanterasdel terreno mientras se gira la cortadora.

AJUSTE DEL MANDOOcasionalmente, el sistema de mando puede"aflojarse", provocando una disminuci6n de lavelocidad. Hay agujeros en la sed del mandopara apretar la tension del cable. Proceder dela siguiente manera:1. Apagar la unidad y desconectar el cable de

bujia de la bujia.2. Afloje la tuerca, mueva el mando la cubierta

del control de la impulsi6n al pr6ximo agu-jero y apriete otra vez la tuerca.

3. Opere la segadora para probar la velocidaddel mecanismo.

4. Si las condiciones no mejoran despues delos pasos descritos (la velocidad hacia adelantequeda la misma), la correa de transmision estadesgastada y tiene que ser sustituida.

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTELevante las ruedas para el corte bajo y baje lasruedas para el corte alto., ajuste la altura decorte para que se acomode a sus requisitos. Laposicion del medio es la mejor para la mayoriade los cespedes.• Para cambiar la altura de corte, empuje la

palanca del ajustador hacia la rueda. Muevala rueda hacia arriba o hacia abajo de modoque se acomode a sus requisitos. Aseg0reseque todas las ruedas queden igualmenteajustadas.

AVlSO: El ajustador esta correctamentecolocado cuando las orejas de la placa estaninsertadas en el agujero del mango. Tambien,los ajustes de 9 posiciones (si equipado) per-miten que el mango pueda ser movido entre lasorejas de la placa.

• Abra la puerta trasera y remueva la taponacolchadora. Guardela en un lugar seguro.

• Ahora puede instalar el recogedor o el des-viador de recortes opcional.

• Para volver a la operacion de acolchamientoo descarga, el tapon acolchador en la abet-tufa de descarga de la segadora.

• La tapon acolchadora debe ser instalada ad-entro de la abertura de la descarga trasera.

• Abra la proteccion contra la descarga yinstale el desviador de contra la descargadebajo de la proteccion como se muestra.

• La segadora esta lista para la operacion dela descarga.

• Para convertir a la operacion de ensacadoo de descarga, el desviador de la descargadebe ser removido y la proteccion contra ladescarga debe estar cerrada.

1. AsegQrese que la segadora este nivelada.2. Remueva la varila medidora de aceite del

tubo de desarga de aceite.3. Usted recibe un envase de aceite con la

unidad. Vierta lentamente el envase enterode aceite en el tubo de relleno del motor.

AVlSO: El terraplen inicial del aceite requieresolamente 18 onzas debido al aceite residualen el motor de la prueba de calidad de 100%del fabricante. AI cambiar el aceite puedenecesitar 20 onzas.4. Inserte y apriete la variNa medidora de

aceite.IMPORTANTE:• Revise el nivel del aceite antes de cada uso.

Agregue aceite si es necesario. Llene hastala linea de Ileno en la varilla medidora denivel.

mezclados con alcohol (conocidos comogasohol, o el uso de etanol o metanol) puedenatraer la humedad, la que conduce a laseparacion y formacion de acidos durante elalmacenamiento. La gasolina acidica puededaSar el sistema del combustible de un motordurante el almacenamiento. Para evitar losproblemas con el motor, se debe vaciar elsistema del combustible antes de guardarlopor un periodo de 30 dias o mas. Vacie elestanque del combustible, haga arrancar elmotor y hagalo funcionar hasta que las lineasdel combustible y el carburador queden vacios.La pr6xima temporada use combustible nuevo.Vea las lnstrucciones Para El AImacenamientopara mas informacion. Nunca use productos delimpieza para el motor o para el carburador enel estanque del combustible pues se puedenproducir da5os permanentes.

PARA PARAR EL MOTOR• Para parar el motor, suelte la barra de con-

troles que exigen la presencia del operador.

PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVISO: Debido alas capas protectoras del mo-tor, una cantidad peque_a de humo puede es-tar presente durante el uso inicial del productoy se debe considerar normal.1. Para hacer arrancar un motor frio, empuje

el cebador tres (3) veces antes de tratarlo.Empuje firmemente. Este paso normal-mente no es necesario cuando se hacearrancar un motor que ya ha estado funcio-nando por unos cuantos minutos.

2. Sujete la barra de control que exige lapresencia del operador abajo en el mango ygire la Nave para el arranque electrico en elsentido de las manillas del reloj para hacerarrancar el motor.

IMPORTANTE: No haga arrancar el motormas de 5 segundos continuados. Espere 5 a 10segundos entre cada vez que trate de hacerloarrancar.• Para comenzar el motor sandio el arrancador

de soga, siga los pasos de arriba. Cambie eluso del Nave de arranque con el arrancadorde soga. No permita que la soga vuelva a suposicion inicial demasiado brusca mente.

AVlSO: En climas mas frios puede que seanecesario repetir los pasos del cebado. En cli-mas mas calurosos el cebar demasiado puedeproducir el ahogo y el motor no va a arrancar.Si se ahoga el motor espere unos cuantosminutos antes de tratar de hacerlo arrancar yno repita los pasos del cebado.

ONSEJOS PARA SEGARPRECAUCION: No utilizar dispositivos anti-

paja de la hoja en la segadora ya que estosaccesorios son peligrosos, pueden daSar susegadora y anular su garantla.• Bajo ciertas condiciones, tal como cesped

muy alto, puede ser necesario el elevarla altura del corte para reducir el esfuerzonecesario para empujar la segadora y paraevitar sobrecargar el motor, dejando mon-tones de recortes de cesped. Puede que seanecesario reducir la velocidad del recorridoy/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre el areapor segunda vez.

• Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el anchodel corte pasando parcialmente por encimadel lugar anteriormente cortado y sieguelentamente.

• Para un mejor ensacado del cesped y para lamayorfa de las condiciones de corte, la velo-cidad del motor debe ajustarse a la posicionde RAPIDO.

• Los poros en los recogedores de cesped detela pueden Ilenarse con mugre y polvo conel uso y los recogedores recaudaran menoscesped. Para evitar este, rocle el recogedorcon la manguera de agua regularmente ydejelo secarse antes de usarlo.

• Mantenga la parte superior del motor, aired-edor del arrancador, despejada y sin recortesde cesped y paja. Esto ayudara el flujo delaire del motor y extendera su duracion.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR Y ACOL-CHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejorrendimiento mantenga la caja de la segadorasin acumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea"LIMPtEZA" en la seccion de Mantenimento deeste manual.

• La cuchilla acolchadora especial va a volvera cortar los recortes de cesped muchasveces, y los reduce en tamaSo, de modo quesi se caen en el cesped se van a dispesarentre este y no se van a notar. Tambien, elcesped acolchado se va a deshacer rapi-damente entregando substancias nutritivaspara el cesped. Siempre acolche con lavelocidad del motor (cuchilla) mas alta, puesasf se obtendra la mejor accion de recorte delas cuchillas.

• Evite cortar el cesped cuando este mojado.El cesped mojado tiende a formar montonese interfiere con la accion de acolchado.La mejor hora para segar el cesped estemprano en la tarde. A esa hora este se hasecado y el area recien cortada no quedaraexpuesta al sol directo.

• Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajustela altura del corte de la segadora de modoque esta corte solamente el tercio superiorde las hojas de cesped. En el caso de que elcesped haya crecido demasiado, puede sernecesario el elevar la altura del corte parareducir el esfuerzo necesario para empujar lasegadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,dejando montones de recortes de cesped.Para un cesped muy pesado, reduzca el an-cho del corte pasando por encima del lugaranteriormente cortado y siegue lentamente.

• Ciertos tipos de cesped y sus condicionespueden exigir que un area tenga que seracolchada por segunda vez para escondercompletamente los recortes. Cuando sehaga el segundo corte, siegue atravesado(en forma perpendicular) a la pasada delprimer corte.

• Cambie su patron de corte de semana asemana. Siegue de norte a sur una semanay luego cambie de este a oeste la pr6ximasemana. Esto evitara que el cesped seenrede y cambie de direccion.

RUEDAS DE IMPULSIONRevise las ruedas de impulsi6n delanteras cadavez antes de segar, para asegurarse de que semueven libremente. Si las ruedas no giran li-bremente quiere decir que hay basura, recortesde cesped, etc. en el area de las ruedas deimpulsion y tienen que limpiarse para liberarlas.Es necesario limpiar las ruedas de impulsion;revise ambas ruedas delanteras.1. Remueva los tapacubos, las tuercas de

seguridad y las arandelas.2. Remueva las ruedas de los ajustadores de

las ruedas.3. Remueva la basura y los recortes de

cesped de dentro de la cubierta contrael polvo, pifi6n y/o de los dientes de losengranajes de las ruedas de impulsi6n.

4. Ponga las ruedas de vuelta en su lugar.AVlSO: Si despues de limpiar las ruedas deimpulsion no giran libremente, p6ngase encontacto con su centro de servicio Sears o conun otro centro de servicio cualificado.

CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLAPara obtener los mejores resultados, la cuchillade la segadora tienen que mantenerse afilada.Cambie la cuchilla doblada o dafiada._PRECAUCl6N: Usar solamente la hojade repuesto aprobada por el fabricante de sucortacesped. 1. Desconecte el alambre de la bujia y p6n-galo en donde no pueda entrar en contactocon esta.

2. Haga descansar la segadora en su lado.AsegQrese que el filtro de aire y que elcarburador queden mirando hacia arriba.

3. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora para evitar que lacuchilla gire cuando se le quite el perno.

AVlSO: Proteja sus manos con guantes y/oenvuelva la cuchilla con una tela gruesa.4. Remueva el perno de la cuchilla girandolo

en el sentido contrario en que giran lasmanillas del reloj.

5. Remueva la cuchilla y los articulos de fer-reteria adjuntadores (el perno, la arandelade seguridad y la arandela endurecida).

AVIS0: Remueva el adaptador de la cuchilla yrevise el cubo interior de la ranura del adap-tador de la cuchilla. La ranura tiene que estaren buenas condiciones para que funcione enforma adecuada. Cambie el adaptador siestadafiado.

PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA1. Ponga el adaptador de la cuchilla en el

ciguefial del motor. AsegQrese que la ranuradel adaptador y que el chavetero del cigue-fial esten alineados.

2. Ponga la cuchilla en el adaptador de estaalineando los dos (2) agujeros en la cuchillacon las salientes elevadas en el adaptador.

3. AsegQrese de que el borde de salida dela cuchilla (opuesto al borde afilado) estehacia arriba hacia el motor.

4. Instale el perno de la cuchilla con la aran-dela de seguridad y la arandela endurecidaen el adaptador de la cuchilla y el ciguefial.

5. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora y apriete el pernode la cuchilla girandolo en el sentido en quegiran las manillas del reloj.

• La torsi6n para apretar recomendada es de35 - 40 pies libras.

IMPORTANTE: El perno de la cuchilla estratado a calo. Se tiene que tener cuidado demantenerla balanceada. Una cuchilla que noesta balanceada va a producir eventualmentedafio en la segadora o en el motor.• La cuchilla puede afilarse con una lima o en

una rueda rectificadora. No trate de afilarlamientras se encuentra en la segadora.

• Para revisar el balance de la cuchilla, claveun clavo en una viga o en la pared. Dejealrededor de una pulgada de un clavo rectoexpuesto. Ponga el agujero central de lacuchilla sobre la cabeza del clavo. Si lacuchilla esta balanceada debe permaneceren la posicion horizontal. Si cualquiera delos extremos de la cuchilla se mueve haciaabajo, afile el extremo pesado hasta que estaquede balanceada.

RECOGEDOR DE CO:SPED• El recogedor de cesped puede ser rociado

con el agua de la manguera pero tiene queestar seco cuando se vaya a usar.

• Revise su recogedor de cesped a menudopara verificar siesta dafiado o deteriorado.Se va a desgastar con el uso normal. Si senecesita cambiar el recogedor, cambielo33

solamente por uno que sea aprobado por elfabricante. De el nOmero del modelo de lasegadora cuando Io ordene.

CAJA DE ENGRANAJES• Para mantener el sistema de impulsion

funcionando en forma adecuada, la caja deengranajes y el area alrededor de la impulsiontienen que mantenerse limpias y sin acumu-lacion de basura. Limpie debajo de la cubiertade la impulsion dos veces por temporada.

• La caja de engranajes se Ilena con lubricantehasta el nivel adecuado en la fabrica. LaOnica vez que el lubricante necesita atenciones cuando se le ha prestado servicio a lacaja de engranajes.

• Si se necesita lubricante, use solamenteGrasa Texaco Starplex Premium 1, Parte No.750369. No use substitutos.

MOTORLUBRICAClONUse solamente aceite de detergente de alta cali-dad clasificado con la clasificacion SG-SL de ser-vicio API. Seleccione la calidad de viscosidad SAEsegQn su temperatura de operacion esperada.

AVlSO: A pesar de que los aceites de multi-viscosidad (5W30, 10W30, etc.) mejoran elarranque en clima frio, estos aceites de mul-tiviscosidad van ha aumentar el consumo deaceite cuando se usan en temperaturas sobre32° E Revise el nivel del aceite del motor mas amenudo, para evitar un posible dado en el mo-tor, debido a que no tiene suficiente aceite.Cambie el aceite despues de 25 horas deoperacion o por Io menos una vez al ado si lasegadora se utiliza menos 25 horas el ado.Revise el nivel del aceite del carter antes dearrancar el motor y despues de cada cinco (5)horas de uso continuado. Apriete el tap6n delaceite en forma segura cada vez que revise elnivel del aceite.PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DEL MOTOR

AVlSO: Antes de inclinar la segadora para drenarel aceite, drene el tanque de combustible hacien-do correr el motor hasta que el tanque este vacio.1. Desconecte el alambre de la bujia y

p6ngalo de modo que no pueda entrar encontacto con esta.

2. Remueva la tapa del dep6sito del aceite;dejela a un lado en una superficie limpia.

3. Incline la cortadora de cesped por estecostado tal como se muestra y purgue elaceite en un recipiente id6neo. Mueva lasegadora de atras para adelante para re-mover todo el aceite que se haya quedadoatrapado dentro del motor.

4. Limpie todo el aceite derramado en la sega-dora yen el lado del motor.

5. Echar aceite despacio en el conducto delaceite, parandose a intervalos regulares paracontrolar el nivel del aceite con la varilla.

6. Parar de adadir aceite cuando se alcanza lasedal de Ileno (FULL) en la varilla. Esperar unminuto para dejar que el aceite se arregle.

7. ContinQe agregando cantidades pequeasde aceite y vuelva a inspeccionar la varillamedidora settles del nivel de aciete en Ileno(FULL). NO sobrellene el motor con aceite,o fumara pesa demante del silenciadorcuando Io valla a arrancar.

8. AsegQrese de apretar la varilla medidoradel aceite antes de arrancar el motor.

9. Vuelva a conectarel alambre de la bujia a esta.

FILTRO DE AIRESu motor puede sufrir averias y funcionar demanera incorrecta con un filtro del aire sucio.Sustituir el papel del cartucho una vez al adoo tras 100 horas de funcionamiento, mas amenudo si se utiliza en condiciones de sucie-dad y polvo particulares.PARA LIMPIAR EL FILTRO DE AIRE

1. Suelte el tornillo e incline la cubierta pararemoverlo.

2. Cuidadosamente, remueva el cartucho.3. Limpielo golpeandolo suavemente en una

MOTORVELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa velocidad del motor ha sido ajustada enla fabrica. No trate de aumentar la velocidaddel motor pues se pueden producir lesionespersonales. Si cree que el motor esta funcio-nando demasiado rapido o demasiado lento,Ileve su segadora a mas con su centro deservicio Sears o con un otro centro de serviciocualificado.CARBURADOR

Su carburador tiene un chorro principal fijono ajustable para controlar la mezcla. Si sumotor no esta funcionando en forma adecuadadebido a problemas que se sospecha vienendel carburador, Ileve su segadora a contactocon su centro de servicio Sears o con un otrocentro de servicio cualificado para repararla y/oajustarla.IMPORTANTE: Nunca manipule el reguladordel motor, el que ha sido ajustado en la fabricapara la velocidad del motor adecuada. Puedeser peligroso hacer funcionar el motor a unavelocidad por sobre el ajuste de alta velocidadde la fabrica. Si cree que la velocidad altaregulada del motor necesita ajuste,contacto consu centro de servicio Sears o con un otro centrode servicio cualificado, el que cuenta con elequipo adecuado y la experiencia para hacerlos ajustes necesarios.

Inmediatamente prepare su segadora para elalmacenamiento al final de cada temporada o sila unidad no se va a usar por 30 dias o mas.SEGADORACuando se va a guardar la segadora por ciertoperiodo de tiempo, limpiela cuidadosamente,remueva toda la mugre, la grasa, las hojas, etc.Guardela en un area limpia y seca.1. MOTORSISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEIMPORTANTE: Es importante evitar quese formen depositos de coma en partesfundamentales del sistemade combustible talescomo el carburador, el filtro del combustible,la mangura del combustible o en el estanquedurante el almacenamiento. Engine Power Rating Information

The gross power rating for individual gas engine models is labeled in accordance with SAE (So-ciety of Automo-tive Engineers) code Jl1940 (Small Engine Power & Torque Rating Procedure),and rating performance has been obtained and corrected in accordance with SAE J1995 (Revision2002-5). Actual gross engine power will be lower and is affected by, among other things, ambi-ent operating conditions and engine-to-engine variability. Given both the wide array of productson which engines are placed and the variety of environmental issues applicable to operating theequipment, the gas engine will not develop the rated gross power when used in a given piece ofpower equipment (actual "on-site" or net horsepower). This difference is due to a variety of factorsincluding, but not limited to, accessories (air cleaner, exhaust, charging, cooling, carburetor, fuelpump, etc.), application limitations, ambient operating conditions (temperature, humidity, altitude),and engine-to-engine variability. Due to manufacturing and capacity limitations, Briggs & Strattonmay substitute an engine of higher rated power for this Series engine.
