    (a work in progress)

Items entered though December 31, 2008

This is a compiled, alphabetical listing of military veterans known to be buried in Starke County, Indiana. Obviously, this is a work in progress, and is by no means complete. This listing does not include all fields of information in the file, which is organized alphabetically by cemetery. In many cases the burial location was indicated by an "old" or incorrect name in a source. In all cases, these have been changed to present day usage. Some are errors in obituaries, like "St. Jacob's Cemetery" when it is now properly "St. Jacob Cemetery". Some are due to legal changes, such as the IOOF (Odd Fellows) Cemetery, also known as the Ora Cemetery, is now The Alexander Heinemann Memorial Cemetery. In some instances, where the township has assumed control of the cemetery, it is now known as the _____ Township Cemetery". Information was gathered from many sources, including:

Information from the WPA Graves Registration Project (1939-1940). Cemetery names were converted to present designations, and obvious errors were corrected, but there still are entries, which do not make sense, or which conflict with other information.

Published obituaries from The Market (North Judson, IN), a local ad paper, mostly in

2005 and later. Scanned images were retained after September 2006. While The Leader (Knox, IN) is the paper of record for legal notices, at times the death notices in that paper often did not include the place of birth, death, or marriage, and sometimes not even the place of interment.

Social Security Death Index (an on-line data base). This was used, in some cases, to

determine complete birth and death dates. There are a number of cases where the SSDI dates conflict with other sources. It also appears that in some cases the SSDI list contains an arbitrary death date of the 15th, instead of just leaving the field blank, as is done in other cases.

American Legion/VFW flag placement lists, which may also include non-veterans.

US Government Veterans Administration interment lists (an on line data base), again to

help determine dates of birth and death, as well as military service. This is not an all inclusive list.

US National Archives Civil War Service Records (an on line data base) to check units.

There are many disagreements between the WPA unit claims and the units listed in this source.

  • The Sons of the Union Veterans Graves Registration file, which is under construction,

was also checked for correct unit(s) of service. There are many individuals claiming Civil War service that are not verified as having served, as yet.

Selective Service System-World War I Draft Registration Cards (1917-1918) (on line data base), again for dates and service information.

Starke County Genealogical Society [SCGS] Cemetery Indexing Project, Vols. I and II (which do not include Railroad and Wayne Townships) for confirmation of limited information. The cemeteries in these two volumes were last inventoried in about 2001 through 2003). In cooperation with the demands of MS Peg Brettin, the burial location, as presented in the SCGS books, is not divulged.

Where reasonable, the partial data from the various sources was combined, and the compiled information was entered here, and in www.findagrave.com., as well as additional information Most conflicting entries were not entered at the Find A Grave site, as I do not yet know which parts of the information are correct. If the individual had any wartime service, the war, primary unit, and the last rank or rating achieved is indicated, if known. Eventually, information will be added to the file to indicate the type of marker placed on the grave, such as Funeral Home, Family or Government, upright or flat, and material (such as granite, marble, bronze or zink. If the grave site also has a foot stone, it will be indicated, also. In those cases where both family and government markers are present, both will be indicated. In the case of government markers, damage will be noted, as replacements can be obtained at no cost for the marker, through the Veterans Administration. Some types of known existing errors are:

Different dates of birth and death. In some cases it looks as if a father and son are buried in the same cemetery, with the incorrect grave designated as veteran in the SCGS books.

Dates of birth or death do not agree with wartime service on the WPA cards, such as Civil War veteran, but born in 1878. This is possibly due to typographical errors.

Day of death arbitrarily indicated as the 15th on the Social Security Death Index [SSDI]. Individuals of the same name and dates located in two different cemeteries. In some

cases, this may be because the remains were relocated to another cemetery. Woman indicated as Civil War veteran, when it probably should be her husband. Name spelling in the sources can vary. Usually the correct name is used, with

comment made by cross-reference in the listing. Entry is a ghost item, included to prove theft of the document data. Flags are sometimes placed on graves of non-veterans on for Memoral Day. These

names may be removed from this list, unless there is some justification for inclusion.

  • Additional considerations are: Location of the grave is not included in the listing because different sources often used

different numbering schemes for burial location. For any specific burial, this information can sometimes be made available, upon request.

While this is intended to be for burials, in one case there appears to be a cenotaph for a Civil War veteran who died in Andersonville Prison, with an upright Government headstone there. There appear to be other memorials and cenotaphs. In the cemeteries throughout the county.

There may be instances of individual memoria markers. The main alphabetical list does not include the memorials at the Starke County Court House, and at Fletcher Cemetery, nor does it include all the names from the Memorial Fountain in North Judson (some of whom are still living.

There are instances where the headstone was placed years before the death of the veteran. Hopefully, these are not included here.

At the end of the list is another listing of those veterans known to have died in Starke County, but either buried elsewhere, orindividuals with no burial information available, and others with a county relationship, added at the request of the family..

Inclusion in this list is not to be construed as granting eligibility for Veterans Administration benefits, nor for membership in any patriotic organization.

This publication will be reprinted annually so long as extensive additions are being made to the information. All documented additions and corrections are welcome. Please notify: Craig Rohrer 115 East Sycamore Street North Judson, IN 46366-1011 [email protected] 574-896-5007
