A packed Assembly Hall provided the perfect atmosphere for the much anticipated final of this year?s Musician of the Year Competition. 40 girls performed in the heats before the final 12 were selected for the final. Head judge Geoffrey Tanti for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland said, ??The standard of competitor was astounding. To have this number of highly technical and accomplished musicians in a small school is a credit to the importance the school places on music within the curriculum. The result of that is well rounded, confident, and self-assured young women.??

The winners were:

Elementary Category ? Grace Campbell on Clarsach

Intermediate Category ? Hannah Burnett-Godfree playing Saxophone

Senior Category ? Nicole Dickie for Voice

Char it y DayPupils and teachers entered into the spirit of Charity Day on Friday 24 March with the theme of Partners in Crime. Lunch time entertainment was provided by Senior 6 with four groups competing in a lip sync battle.

We were then delighted to welcome singer / songwriter, Murdo Mitchell on Monday 27 March who performed a lunch time gig with the proceeds also going to the charity fund. Pupils joined in, singing along to Murdo's renditions of Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran.

Junior Road Safet yAs you know most pupils leave from the back gate at the end of the school day, so it is compulsory that parents park and drive safely. This includes letting girls cross the road and, walking your child safely to your car. Please also tell your daughter that if it is not safe to cross the road at the school gate don?t try to, there is a pedestrian crossing only a few hundred metres along the road. This article is to ensure that the Craigholme Community are safe outside the school.

The Reading Café - was on Friday 17 March and the whole Junior School took part in this exciting event. Junior 5 and Junior 7 did reciprocal reading, Junior 3 and Junior 2 read a book and then drew about what they read and what happened in the story. Junior 1 coloured in and decorated cakes, Junior 4 played, "Blooms Buttons" and Junior 6 made delicious treats that people had. Everyone had a really good time and we look forward to doing this again.

On 22 March, Olivia Donnelly in J1 had a very special job to carry out. She was chosen to present flowers to, Princess Anne when she visited Olivia?s home town of Bothwell to rededicate the ancient 700 year old Bothwell Parish Church following £2 million of restoration work. The Princess is patron of the restoration committee and Olivia attends Sunday School at the Church each week.

A number of our girls enjoyed considerable success at the Glasgow Music Festival this month. Grace Campbell, Junior 6 made national headlines following her performance when she appeared in, ?The Herald? under the headline ?A Graceful Performance?. Ailsa Marshall S2 and Hannah Burnett-Godfree S1 wowed the judges with their clarinet and saxophone duet, coming fourth in their category. What made this result all the more special was that they were competing against music students from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The judges awarded them a ?Highly Commended? for their ?superior performance.? Lena McBride J4, Lily Mappin J4, Anna Campbell J4 and Faith McDermott in J5 were a credit to Craigholme with their violin solo performances.

Another enjoyable and inspiring evening was had by Mrs Sweeney, Maliha Khan and Rachel Wallace when they attended the annual Beatson Institute for Cancer Research Open Evening on Wednesday 15 March. The evening began with Maliha and Rachel engaging with the activities on offer. This included creating the p53 gene, using gummie bears and laces and extracting the DNA from strawberries.

They listened intently to four scientists working at the forefront of cancer research. All four of the scientists were passionate, eloquent and on a mission to improve diagnosis, treatment and the prevention of various cancers.  Topics covered ranged from:  Imaging cancer, Cell death and Bowel cancer, Immunotherapy and taking potential treatments from the research setting into the clinical setting.

The evening finished with a tour of the amazing facilit ies which the scientists use to make their breakthroughs. I think we all left feeling what an amazing facility to have in our home city!

Maisie's dad, Mr Matskas, came in for a very special show and tell. He showed us different ways that computers and new technologies can help us now and in the future. We even look at facial, age and emotion recognition and discussed the ways they could help us. We designed our own devices with new functions.

Junior 1 Learn About New Technologies

Junior 7 talked about a French prank that the class did on their teacher (Mrs. Neill). They also talked about how in Art they are learning about a French artist called Matice. They also talked about their London trip and about their Easter holidays.

Both Lena and Faith received the judge?s commendations with Anna winning third prize and Lily taking second. Finally, Hannah and Ailsa returned to the competition platform later in the Festival this time as soloists. Ailsa received a ?Highly Commended? with Hannah winning her class. A former pupils team comprising of Rosinah Ahktar (GK), Nicky Wilson (Captain), Jilly Bell, Laura Jarvie, Laura Mann, Gillian Pettigrew, Mhairi Taylor, Lesley Cosh, Bethan Mann, Hazel Imrie, Emma Bayne, Millie Steiger (V-Capt) & Julia Robbie, and coached and managed by the Howie sisters, Alison and Heather, turned out to try and deny the Craigholme 1st X1 their last victory of the season.

The match was an excellent advert for the game of hockey and ended in a 4-4 draw. Well done to all who played, but particularly to the Sixth Year girls: Kayleigh, Emily, Emma, Lindsay, and Chloe, for whom this was their last School hockey fixture (and Fiona Bell, who missed the match due to illness), they have proven to be great leaders and ambassadors for the School. A full report of all the action is available on the School website.

The Big Cur ry NightNicole Dickie in S5 was invited to perform a selection of Scottish Songs at the Big Curry Night at Pollokshields Burgh Hall in aid of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice. Along with a sumptuous dinner, guests were entertained by Nicole and Bollywood dancers from the Desi Bravehearts at the sparkling event organised by Councillor Hanif Raja MBE and long-time hospice supporter. Councillor Raja thanked Nicole most warmly for her outstanding contribution to the evening and praised the many talented pupils at Craigholme School. The event raised in excess of £30,000.

On Thursday 16 March, Junior 1, Junior 2 and Junior 5 went to Stirling castle, as Junior five are studying the Scottish Wars of Independence. They had a tour of the castle and saw amazing sites. Junior 5 said, " It was a good trip and very fun. Everyone had a good time."

A Busy Mont h for t he NurseryNursery pupils this month have enjoyed learning about recycling, discovering senses and looking at new life in the garden. They had a very noisy Charity Day dressed as Heroes and Villains but made sure they still had time to care for the Nursery Guinea Pigs. They also had the opportunity to enjoy lunch outside on a very sunny day.

The most recent module in our S6 Leadership Course, designed by Miss Currie, was delivered on 29 March. S6 pupils received training and development in "Lil Miss- Hits" as part of the Lawn Tennis Association's "She Rallies" initiative which is championed by Judy Murray, in a bid to get more girls playing and more women coaching tennis.

This training course was the first in the UK to be delivered to Young Leaders and it is an incredibly worthwhile initiative empowering and inspiring young women into coaching roles.

Lil Miss-Hits was designed to up-skill teachers, students, sports leaders, etc to introduce girls aged 5-8 to learn tennis in a fun environment. It is a non-technical course making tennis delivery simple and fun.

The Higher Health and Food Technology donned their wellies on Friday 3 March and headed to the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride for a trip round a working farm. As well as riding in a tractor from the main museum to the farm (and getting up close and personal with cows, pigs, chickens and sheep!) the girls also learnt about issues such as traceability, animal welfare and different farming methods.

It was a very enjoyable trip for the girls and relevant to their current unit of work ?Contemporary Food Issues? which examines factors which may affect consumers? choice of food.

Junior 6 visited Gurdwara this month as part of their study of Sikhism and we received a very warm welcome. We were given a tour of the Gurdwara and learned about the history of Sikhism and the role of Sikhs in our community.
