In regards to the staff car park, I ask that parent/carers do not enter the car park for “drop

Term 4 has been a busy and highly productive term at Cranebrook High School. Students have been focussed on assessment tasks and examinations as well as participating in the very large range of in class and outside of class opportunities. Year 12 finished the year with excellent conduct and effort in the HSC Examinations and thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the Year 12 Formal.

I would to thank our students and parents/carers for your support and encouragement as we focus on improving our school uniform. Students have responded very well to this and I am pleased with the progress that has been made. Also, you would have noticed the recent signs that were placed near the entrance to the car park. Once again, I thank parents and carers for your support in this area.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

MR CRAIG DUNNE

Last week saw our school perform in the wonderful Schools Spectacular – Own the Moment – performances. Our dance students performed on stage and our Entertainment class students helped to run the back stage. It is a wonderful achievement in being selected to participate in this concert and our students were amazing!

Last week also saw Year 11 student Matthew Bolding Receive the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Award for outstanding work in Science. This is indeed a wonderful achievement and Matthew and a member of his family will visit the Institute as part of the award.

I would like to congratulate all of the students who completed the Quicksmart Literacy program this year. Students in this program have improved their literacy skills significantly and they deserve praise for their perseverance and focus throughout the year.

Our staff and students continue to work together in partnership with the community to provide excellent experiences and opportunities. There was excellent participation in a variety of programs and events around the school this term including: the Australian Indigenous Mentoring program (AIME); the 7am Morning Fitness Class 3 times a week; the History Mastermind Competition; the Creating Chances program; the Pathways to Dreaming excursions; the White Ribbon Gala Day; our Agriculture Students presented at the SLAMN Conference; the Year 7 Swimming program; the Girls Rising event; the school’s Barista Coffee program; Year 10 Work Experience; the University of Sydney Creative Writing Day; the Western Sydney University Fast Forward Program; the list goes on and on.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY MS JOANNE FORD 7 & 10

The end of 2017 marks an important time for Years 7 & 10.

Excitingly, Year 10 transition to their senior studies, beginning the final stage of their time at school and ultimately, their High School Certificate. In Year 11, students will commence Preliminary HSC courses they have elected to study based around their interests and career aspirations. Recently, Year 10 completed their second round of work experience and this has no doubt assisted them in focusing their interests and shaping elective class choices. Students are encouraged to reflect upon their time at work experience and continue to develop important work and interpersonal skills.

Year 7 have just completed Swim & Survive at Richmond Pool. Teachers and staff from the pool reported excellent behaviour and application from our students with some wonderful improvements made across all groups. I commend Year 7 on successfully negotiating their way through their first year of high school- the year has gone extremely fast.

I would like to wish all families and students a safe and enjoyable break and I am looking forward to working with each of you in 2018.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY MS JUDITH KEMPTHORNE (8 & 11)

This will be the last time I will use the term “Year 11” for the fabulous group of students who have now begun their HSC journey as Year 12, 2018! Armed with their Assessment Booklets and NESA HSC Rules and Procedures, they have almost completed the first term of their HSC studies, and the holidays

ahead should give them a great opportunity to revitalise and recharge for a busy 2018.

Term 4 began with the induction of our new team of Year 12 School Leaders. Students submitted a written application including comments from teacher referees, were interviewed by our Leadership Panel and finally made a speech at a whole school assembly. Each of the successful candidiates truly deserve their new leadership roles in our school. Mr. Dunne, Mr. Enese, Mr. Keating [Student Leadership Coordinator] and I look forward to working with them throughout 2018.

Year 8 students are also getting ready to enter a new phase of their high school learning journey, as they begin to study their three Elective Subjects in Year 9 in 2018. They will also now be in separate class groups for each of their core subjects, so the class they are in for Science, for example, might be quite different to the class they are in for Geography. This is a great opportunity for students to focus on improving in areas where they feel they could be doing better, while having the chance to extend and challenge themselves in the subjects where they feel they are performing well. I can’t wait to see what you achieve in 2018, Year 8!

School Leaders, 2018.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY MR STEPHEN UITTERLINDEN (9 & 12)

It is hard to believe that the 2017 school year will soon come to a close, it has certainly flown by! Shortly, students will receive their academic reports for Semester Two. I encourage all students to sit down and have a good read through their reports, ensuring that they aren’t just focusing on the marks but also taking specific notice of teacher comments. Taking on-board teacher comments, individual strengths, areas requiring improvement along with effort and application is a valuable tool for students to be able to self-reflect and continue to build into their studies next year. It is worthwhile remembering that we all have our own personal bests and we should strive for this.

Over the holiday period, Year 9 are encouraged to speak with family and friends about their future job interests and how work experience in Year 10 can help shape this. Year 10 2018 will have two opportunities to undertake work experience and by starting the conversation early, as we have done at school, students will get the most out of these opportunities.

I would like to wish all students and families the best for the holiday period, hoping that the break proves safe, restful and enjoyable.

A shot of the Expo at Darling Harbour

On Thursday 12th of October, a number of Cranebrook High School students enjoyed participating in special activities at the Visual Impact Expo at Darling Harbour. The event provided students with an insight into the Print Media and Signcraft industries and demonstrated the integral part that Visual Arts and Design plays in this career industry area. Our students experienced car wrapping, airbrush and traditional Signcraft methods, print transfers, formula one model car making and racing. Students were also able to see the impressive technology that creates all types of print media.

In Term Three, students from Years 9 and 10 participated in the Creating Chances Program. They engaged in a series of sport and team building activities aimed at promoting positive peer relations, enhancing self- confidence and developing communication skills.

At the beginning of Term Four our students graduated as coaches and started working with Braddock Primary School. They have shown exemplary leadership skills and become positive role models for their younger peers.

Spooky Short Story Competition

Run

By Kayla Ellis – 8R

I can hear it. I can feel it. Every day and night, always so close to being here, yet so very far away. At night it stalks me through my entire house; when I look at it I will freeze but then I have to stare into its poiercing, black eyes.

It never speaks or even utters a single sound; it will only watch. It ALWAYS watches. No matter where I go or what I am doing. I try to ignore the constant stare of it, the constant breathing on the back of my neck, even just as I am writing this. I can see it crouch down as if ready to attack at any moment. This thing is driving me insane. I feel like I could snap at any moment if it goes on for much longer.

People don’t believe me, saying that I’m making this up; saying that I am crazy, but that can’t be true right? They locked me away because they just won’t believe me when I said it’s there. This thing is making people think that I am insane. But, ha ha, you believe me, ha, ha, ha, right?

Well what a busy year it has been. From being officially recognised as senior students at the start of the year to now claiming the title this term as, the new and improved Year 12 students!

There were a number of excursions our students were involved in: University, Fast Forward, Elevate, AIME, Careers, sporting and faculty.

We pioneered the ordering online system with our fabulous looking Yr 12 Jackets thanks to Indigo Wolf. Everyone that ordered them look outstanding.

Our Yearly Exams were done and dusted last term but now, our focus is staying on top of our workload and completing what needs to be done until the end of the year.

I wanted to touch on your role as a senior – the responsibility placed on you to set a positive example to the years below us. If we model our standards highly by dressing neatly, speaking and behaving respectfully … these qualities will filter down to our juniors.

Success is not always measured by what you have achieved, but by the way you go about applying yourself, persevering and knowing that you’re giving it your best efforts.

Pray you all enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday.

SRC

The SRC and Student Leadership Team have had a productive and hectic semester. Recycling and community engagement has been a focus as we have initiated the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ recycling scheme across the school. We have also continued to forge our school’s close relationship with the community through our involvement in the Cranebrook Connects community group and Legacy Week. The SRC and Student Leadership Team have also initiated a Christmas Hamper Appeal to raise donations that will be made to the local community groups of Barnados and NCNS for use in the Cranebrook community.

LIBRARY This term, students had a lot of fun with Halloween. The library was decorated with posters, skulls and cobwebs, a display of spooky library books about monsters, ghosts and ghouls. The Spooky Story competition was won by Kayla Ellis and over three days the movie ‘Hocus Pocus’ was screened. The students also enjoyed a ‘Skull Hunt’ and won small prizes.

On Thursday, 30 November, an interschool Chess contest versus Kingswood High School was held in the library. The competition for students in for Years 7-8 introduced students to the idea of competition chess in a relaxed way and prepare them for further interschool chess in 2018.

As seen above, quiet reading during lunchtime occurs at the CHS library and our seniors use the study room.

Our Reading Club has swelled in number with several year 7’s selecting this as their Thursday afternoon choice. The theme of Book of the Month for November/December is ‘Classic Novels’ of own choice – a bit of a challenge for the end of the year.

My thanks to my team of library monitors for this year: Gavin Howarth, Tara Couzins, Haylee Young, Heath Griffiths and Lachlan Hamilton. They learnt quickly and have fulfilled their library duties well. Thanks also to my library assistants – Kathy Kratz, Julie Fuller and Suzie Coratza - for their efficient helpfulness during the year. Happy Christmas and have a safe reading holiday! There is no boredom with a good book to read.

LEARNING AND SUPPORT TEAM In Term 4 our Year 7 students completed the QuickSmart reading program. QuickSmart is an intensive reading program which consists of three thirty minute lessons a week, over a thirty week period. The program is called QuickSmart to encourage students to become quick in their response speed and smart in their understanding and strategy use.

This year, thirty-eight Year 7 students participated in the program and received their certificate of achievement at a special morning tea held by the Learning Assistance Faculty. Congratulations to all Year 7 students for their hard work this year!

SOCIAL SKETCH CLUB The Social Sketch Club was established late in Term Three and has since grown into a thriving community for our students. The club has become a creative hub for our most talented students to share their creative skills and artworks in an inclusive and socially supportive network. The club runs every Friday at lunchtimes and has attracted a diverse range of students from across all year groups but has particularly been popular with our Year 7 cohort. The success of our club through Term Four has been dependent on our regular members who have inspired us each week with their beautiful pieces of art. We look forward to running the Social Sketch Club in 2018 and warmly welcome all new members.

SCIENCE

Recently, Year 8 students completed the NSW VALID Science Examination. The science teachers were most impressed with the way these students conducted themselves during the examination. Students will receive their results from this examination early in 2018.

The results from the Year 10 VALID Science examination which was completed in Term 2 should be available to students within the next week.

The Science Department has continued to run excursions to enhance our students learning. So far this term a group of Year 9 students have been to Sydney University to participate in Forensic Science workshops and our Year 11 Chemistry students attended a Polymer lecture at Western Sydney University.

In the next couple of weeks, the Year 11 Chemistry and Physics classes will go to ANSTO. ANSTO is one of Australia’s largest public research organisations and is widely recognised as an international player in the field of nuclear science and technology. ANSTO works across areas such as health, environmental science and materials to find solutions to some of the biggest questions in science. Some Year 7 students will be attending workshops with ASELL (Advancing Science and Engineering through Laboratory Learning).

Finally, we are pleased to announce that Cranebrook’s nominee for the Victor Chang Award was Matthew Bolding. The Victor Chang Award recognises excellence in Science. The Agriculture Showcase class and some of the Show Team also presented at the SLAMN conference at Nirimba College. This conference was for school Science support staff from all the regions of Sydney and beyond. Our students talked about Alpaca production and taught the participants how to felt and some basic Alpaca handling. It was wonderful to have so many of the attendees congratulate our school on the level of knowledge, confidence and teamwork that our students demonstrated.

The second half of the year is always a busy and exciting time for students with Year 12 students making applications for further study and /or employment and Year 10 students planning and preparing for their senior studies. Planning for life after school is very important and through community partnerships with organisations such as Panthers on the Prowl, Barnardos and links with WSU and the University of Sydney’s Widening Participation program, Cranebrook High School provides a great variety of opportunities for students to gain the skills to make informed decisions about their future.

WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY DAY November 2017

Western Sydney University Day provided a great opportunity for our senior students to gain detailed information about courses available at WSU and also the types of careers they can lead to. On the day, students participated in three seminars and came away with a greater understanding of options available to them.
