Destruction of Syntax- Imagination without Strings- Words in FreedomF.T. Marinetti

My Technical Manifesto of Futurist Literature, with which I invented essential and synthetic lyricism, imagination without strings, and words-in-freedom, deals exclusively with poetic inspiration. Philosophy, the exact sciences, politics, journalism, education, business, however much they may seek synthetic forms of expression, will still need to use syntax and punctuation. I am obliged, for that matter, to use them myself in order to make myself clear to you.

Salutations from trap\door! Welcome to the first issue of trap\door’s The Crawl Space for 2011 (and we’ll probably squeak out one edition in 2012 before the end of days). We hope you enjoy this newsletter and that this will one day become a perma-nent bathroom fixture.

First off, a big thank you to everyone involved in the creation of this newsletter; those that interviewed, were interviewed and those that entered View (a store somewhere or something). Thanks to Bonnie Patton, who produced a wonderful cover image for us. Her work is up at Blueprint Gallery until the middle of July, so go see that (518 4 Ave S) and also pick up a NM+ Frampton Comes Alive or chart topping LP from the Nihilist Spasm Band.We hope to build upon this innaguaral issue, so please feel free to contribute whatever you please. We are building newsletters based on a loose theme (this issue is of course playing Frogger with the deadlines whooshing by). Again, thank you for having a gander at this newsletter, we are all part of this incredible arts community and we couldn’t be happier providing a platform on which to showcase it.

What is emerging from the trap door in the near future? We are glad to be able to afford both the general exhibition and the Gushul Residency! That is thanks to the success of 3x8x10 and the 2nd Annual Psychic Fair. As government grants are hard to come by these days, it’s nice to know we can carry on with the community’s support, and we hope we can continue to provide entertaining events that can earn your dollars.

Look forward to the September residency in Blairmore which will house Katherine Pickering and Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed. Come late October, Marie-Lyn Quirion will arrive in Lethbridge from Montreal, and spend a week making participatory photo-works. We are really excited to see what come of these 2011 experiences.

Well, you know us and buttons. We would like to thank the YWCA for their order, it will really help with things, and as well, Jill Flaman for her order. We are always taking custom 1” button orders, and members get 10 cents off every button, what a deal!

Anyway, about the newsletter, we are always excited to showcase people’s work within these pages, and don’t feel shy to send along a high res copy of your work. A bonus to membership to trap\door is that you are able to advertise for free! Advertise your work, your crafts, your business, your best 10km time, your morning regiment, whatever! We want the newsletter to be a showcase of all the talent we have in our membership. As soon as this newsletter is put to print, we are starting work on the next one, so hopefully we can inspire you to contribute.

Speaking of print, we would like to bring the newsletter back to its tangible form for this year. It’s an expensive proposition, so we would like your input. Would you be willing to purchase the print form of this newsletter if it was based on a cost-recovery basis? We hope to give the same content in free web/digital form, so you do get the newsletter in some form. We are just hoping that we can provide a newsletter in full size, colour format, but to do that we would need to know we can almost break even. We are obviously trying a new thing here, so let us know what you feel about it.

Anyway, enjoy the newsletter, enjoy the summer, have a good one!

Trap\door has a large component of students, graduates and professors of the University of Lethbridge Fine Arts department. We enjoy the opportunity to recognize one student for excellence in studio work at the end of year open house, and this year the award was presented to Chad Patterson, who just graduated the BFA program, and we got the chance to sit and talk about the very popular series of album covers that were his main production of his last semester in Senior Studio.

For those that have experienced the End of School burn, the feeling of not being sure where your art practise is headed, can be a pretty anxious time. Luckily for Chad, the after burn had a few important situations that aligned and helped him create the series of Album covers. Beginning with a flash of an idea, an upcoming birthday and reading an article about Robert Luongo, the fact that music has always been part of his life was no longer an accompanyment like drawing at 14 with the metal blasting, but as a source for his creative output. To listen to an album, it usually takes you back to a memory or time in your life. To begin, Chad chose 36 albums which were his watershed albums. Each their own time and place in his life, each being able to influence his approach at painting.

By choosing to let the album’s duration dictate the length of time he had to finish each work presented a new way in which he ap-proached each painting. Also, by playing each album through headphones he became immersed in the music and the work, it allowed for focus and no distractions, which provided a working space of painting quickly, free of many other thoughts, a subcon-cious method of working.

It allowed for the output of 36 individual works which is quite an ac-complishment if you ever consider your experience with burnout. A renewed and productive semester was not lost on the professors, which is why Chad received the trap\door award (trap\door allows the profs to choose who the award goes to).

His artwork worked well in the context of what the Blueprint Gallery was about, and so he was commisioned to display his works up at the Blueprint Gallery the day after the open house, and were on display til the end of May 2011.

What is next for Chad? Music based- yes, painting based- no. The Parlour is exhibiting a video/audio installation from June 24th to July 16th. They will be on display from 8-10 PM Thursdays to Sundays during that time. Chad continues to approach art production with a blue-collar work ethic, so expect to see much more of his work in and around Lethbridge.
