Manufacturing Challenges and the Big Data OpportunityManufacturing leaders have been keeping a close watch on the convergence of analytics and high performance computing (HPC). HPC now impacts the entire product design and manufacturing life cycle, and hence data must be shared and analyzed across the entire enterprise. Meanwhile, the cost of data storage has plateaued while the rate of data capture is soaring.

The factors driving the need for data-driven computing vary across the manufacturing enterprise but share common themes: The increased number of products and simulation load cases couple to drive compute demand and the increased amount of product data. At the same time, vast amounts of data available from physical testing, the manufacturing floor and customer feedback can be leveraged to improve product quality. As product portfolios grow — while regulations such as safety requirements or compliance issues increase — the need for a more powerful data platform emerges.

Take the automotive industry, where simulation is a critical technology in the design process, complementing physical testing to ensure both safer and more competitive vehicles. Thousands of simulations are run on every design (in the form of impact simulation, structural analysis, electromagnetics or other areas), and those simulations produce huge volumes of data. There is a growing requirement to share data for this purpose between test, manufacturing and other disciplines, and to tune and verify simulations to improve the overall product.

Similarly, aerospace engineers can simulate a digital model flying through actual flight profiles recorded on the physical aircraft via board sensors. This capability not only uncovers unanticipated damage but also can provide a prognosis for the airframe when engineers “fly” the digital model through possible future missions.

To achieve the results promised by fully leveraging these opportunities not only requires an integrated environment between HPC simulation and data analytics, but also the compute power to generate actionable results in time to influence the decision process.

About the Urika-GX Platform for Seizing Big Data Advantages

The Solution: A Converged, High-Performance Analytics PlatformThe Cray Urika-GX agile analytics platform converges supercomputing with the most advanced big data capabilities in one powerful solution. This converged platform provides the agility and capabilities needed to turn data into insight and discovery.

Key Capabilities for Manufacturers• Run your entire analytics pipeline on a single, unified platform.• Gain breakthrough insights by combining multiple big data workloads — from Hadoop and Spark to complex interactive graph data

discovery. • Augment modeling and simulation with data to provide the highest-fidelity simulation results.• Enable high-throughput event processing and data capture from sensors, data feeds and instruments.• Integrate datasets and math models for search, analysis, predictive modeling and knowledge discovery.• Get blazing-fast results due to Cray’s systems expertise: Aries interconnect, a high degree of parallelism, in-memory performance and

optimized design.• Ensure your analytics infrastructure is built on an open framework, with standard software and integrated design, that reduces

complexity and resource requirements and can evolve as new analytics technologies and regulations emerge.

Benefits for Manufacturers• Improve product quality: Unlock the potential of big data from varied sources to improve design performance and improve failure

prediction.• Reduce project timeframes: Learn more — faster — about how your product will perform in a wide range of environments.• Simplify and streamline processes: The Urika-GX system helps companies build analytics efficiently into their product development

and delivery workflows.• Reduce risk: Enhanced insight reveals potential problems and results in a more robust product design.• Protect intellectual property: The Urika-GX system enables cybersecurity analysts to find anomalous activity with greater speed and

generates fewer false positives than traditional rules-based systems.
