“It’s A Great Time to Be a Pioneer” is a statement that I have heard many times over the last several months.

I first heard this statement at our 2016 Commencement Exercises in May as Paul McFadden, our Athletic Director, Campus Minister, and Registrar, was addressing the 500 individuals in attendance and our 46 graduates who were graduating in nine different degree areas. The statement has somewhat become

a rallying cry around campus. A rallying cry is defined as “a word or phrase that is used to make people join together to support an idea or cause.” This is not a new concept but a noble and traditional concept. Our founder, Emmett Smith Jr. was the champion in getting individuals to come together in support of a good work. I can remember, vividly, him speaking and using scriptures like Ecclesiastes 4:12, “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken,” and Nehemiah 4:6, “for the people had a mind to work” as he gathered support for CRC and other good Christian works. The concept of joining

together to support CRC is alive and well as CRC enters its 52nd year. As I daily drive to this beautiful 150 acre campus I get goose bumps as I make the drive around Pioneer Circle and onto College Drive. I am so proud of what I see that stands as a testimony to Bro. Smith and the thousands who have joined together to build and support CRC and who want the progress to continue as CRC stays true to its mission. If you have not been to campus within the last month you will be well pleased with the improvements that have been made during the summer of 2016. If you have not been on campus within the last year you will be astonished and I might even say overwhelmed at the changes on

the CRC campus. Here is what will be most visible to you:1. All of the main campus roads

and major parking areas are hard surfaced with concrete. This has been a major project which has dramatically changed the CRC campus. The last phase of this major campus road improvement project is in its second year and could not have been made possible without the special help of the Winters Family through their company, Nettleton Concrete.

2. Honor Housing II, a 3548 square foot structure, which houses 14 students in an

apartment style dwelling, was completed on the Friday before students moved in on a Sunday in mid-August. All of the apartments are occupied as we begin this semester. Students love living in one of our two honor housing units which are designed for Junior and Senior level students.

3. The Carter Activities Center was transformed over the summer with a new playing surface and floor graphics as we transition to the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). New bleachers, a new work out room and a coach’s office was added to the existing interior space within the activities center. You will read more about this transition to the

NAIA in this newsletter. As stated, I am so thankful and proud of all the support CRC has gathered over the years as well as all of the financial support that we must continue to receive annually to continue this worthwhile

ministry. Growing, pushing forward, making progress, gaining ground, doing it the right way, and advancing are words I often hear as characteristic of CRC in 2016. I continue to be amazed with our WCRC (Women for Crowley’s Ridge College) auxiliary as they join together to continue to bless CRC in so many ways. Within the last year their completed projects on the CRC campus include: purchasing 500 new event chairs, 14 new mattresses, a custom 4ft. x 10ft. whiteboard for smartboard technology, a Mill Creek Garden project, and a Media Enhancement project for the Carter Activities

Center. All of these projects came at a cost of $17,467.24 and were 100% funded by WCRC from their various fundraising activities. WCRC is seeking additional volunteers to help with this wonderful work. To find out more about WCRC membership you can call Karen Pillow at CRC’s main number 870-236-6901 or email her at [email protected]. WCRC recently elected new officers for the 2016-2017 year. We appreciate these ladies for stepping up and taking on leadership roles. Amanda Plyley was elected President. Karen Cremeens and Angie Joiner will serve as Co-Vice Presidents while Priscilla Hobby serves as Secretary and Linda Hoppe as Treasurer. CRC continues to have record enrollments. A record enrollment has now been recorded in the last five consecutive semesters. The enrollment for the fall semester of 2016 stands at 230. The two most significant enrollment factors are a 5.9% FTE (Full Time Equivalency) and a 9.3% full time student increase over the previous year. As we have record enrollments we also have larger graduating classes. Since transitioning to a four year college in 2008, we understand our responsibility to deliver four year educational degrees that lead to gainful employment or advanced studies. CRC graduates are doing extremely well in the job market. Just to emphasize this point, CRC had 11 Graduates in May who received the BS in Education with either an Elementary Education K-6 License or a PE & Health K-12 License. Ten of the 11 have teaching positions in area public and private schools. One student has used their Elementary Education training to open their own day care. Rarely does CRC have a

retirement to announce. nancy Joneshill, CRC’s Director of Admissions announced her retirement in May after 23 years of faithful and loyal service. She

has moved to the Springfield. Missouri area. Nancy also served as Director of Student Life. Ms. Joneshill was not only interested in getting students to come to CRC but was also interested in keeping students at CRC, once enrolled, by engagement activities.

Nancy’s view of college life included more than classroom studies and her energy in providing student life activities for students was endless. Nancy will be missed at CRC but we wish her well in her retirement. With the retirement of Ms. Joneshill, Chris Hughes, who was serving as our Assistant Director of Admissions since August of 2011, was promoted to Admissions Director. Chris graduated from CRC in 2002 and from Pepperdine University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion. From 2004 to 2011 Chris served the O’Fallon, Missouri, Church of Christ as Youth and Family Minister, the Van Buren Church of Christ as minister, the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Paragould as Youth Minister and the Center for Fathers and Families as Executive Director. Chris is doing a wonderful job and we are so proud to have another CRC Alumnus serving at CRC. erica ewing has been appointed Director of Student Life and Sports Information Director. Erica is a 2016 CRC Graduate with

a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a minor in Sports Management. Erica is from Springfield, Missouri. Erica is responsible for the planning and

management of all student life activities and serves as the Student Government Coordinator. In her role as Sports Information

Director, she is responsible for all athletic media communications and for the compiling and publicizing of all sports information for CRC’s intercollegiate athletic programs. This includes compiling statistics and updating all aspects of the website in regards to athletics, production of game day programs, writing press releases

on game summaries and feature stories. She will also respond to statistical and other report requirements to the NAIA and our conference affiliation. Erica has a big job and she is doing it well. As stated above, “It’s A Great Time to Be a Pioneer.” It’s a great time as we recognize our current accomplishments that we have

attained by joining together. It is a great time for more students to see the benefit of being a part of the CRC student body. It is a great time for CRC’s generous supporters to continue their support. It is a great time for the identification of new financial supporters for CRC. It is a great time for CRC to continue delivering high quality educational services in a Christian Environment. We are excited about the present and the future. Join in the excitement as we thank God for blessing CRC.

Meet BoBBy and Sandy KetchuM - a Future GiFt For crc

I remember growing up and hearing my Dad talk about what a good person he thought Will Rogers must have been. He was a humorist and entertainer when my Dad was just a youngster. One his favorite quotes that I remember my Dad liked was “I never met a man I didn’t like.” The older I get, the more I realize that if I present

myself in the right way and have a friendly outlook on life for all to see, perhaps Will Rogers’ quote really can be true.

We certainly enjoy being around the students and staff at Crowley’s Ridge College and all our alumni and friends who make this ministry possible. Having our alumni and other friends drop by is always a joy! Charles Underwood dropped by campus today and we reminisced about his growing up in Paragould and attending Crowley’s Ridge College. Charles seemed to enjoy our visit and campus tour and had some nice comments about how good it is to see the progress of CRC. President Hoppe, Vice President, Art Smith and I all enjoyed visiting with Charles and encourage all alumni and friends of CRC to drop by campus when you can. We would love to show you around and invite you to join us for a complimentary lunch in the Jennie Sue Eubanks Cafeteria. Our Food Services Director, Tereasa Mitchell and her staff do an excellent job in providing delicious meals!

It is very important for CRC to continue making progress as we serve students in such a great Christian atmosphere. Will Rogers is also given credit for saying “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” CRC is on the right track, but we are not sitting still. We simply cannot sit still because God expects us to do our best in helping

students learn about Him while receiving a quality Christian education. We can only do our best by constant focus upon improving every aspect of CRC, which as you can imagine, requires a good amount of financial support.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who prayerfully and financially supports CRC. As we near year-end, my thoughts quickly turn to the subject of giving. When I think about giving and someone who is extremely humble and kind and does not like to attract attention to themselves, the names Bobby and Sandy Ketchum often come to mind. Bobby is one

of the newer members of CRC’s board of trustees and a former elder for many years, having served at the Samford congregation near Steele, Missouri.

Bobby and Sandy have been great examples that my family has looked up to for many years. I was pleased, but not surprised to get a phone

call recently from an insurance company getting the correct information, which will enable CRC to receive a minimum future gift of $50,000. The Ketchums had purchased a new life insurance policy on the life of Sandy and named Crowley’s Ridge College as the owner and beneficiary. The cost for this policy is $1,400 a year. CRC pays the cost of the annual premium and the Ketchums provide a tax deductible gift to CRC to offset the premium cost. The policy also builds up cash value that the college could access for a special need at some point, if needed.

What a good way to make a larger gift to CRC at some point in our future and also receive an income tax deduction for the cost of the annual premiums. Future gifts like this will allow the college to keep improving as we serve students for many years to come. We need others to join the Ketchums and numerous others who have made planned gifts that allow CRC to continue progressing. We have a ten-year strategic plan to expand our academic programs by offering additional degrees, build new facilities, improve our campus roads and infrastructure, provide enjoyable student life activities, student scholarships and fund many other areas important to students succeeding in college.

We also need more to join in supporting CRC with a gift each month. Additionally, we invite you to consider becoming a member of The President’s Circle and giving up to $1,000 a year or $84 a month to help our students. We need more people to inquire about a charitable gift annuity and let us show you how to receive regular income for life at rates of up to 9 percent, depending on your age. We need more

friends including Crowley’s Ridge College in their will and estate plan. Doing so can make certain that your regular support to CRC continues and helps us make progress as described in this article.

The last twenty-two years of my career have been in the field of charitable estate planning. It has been a blessing to help friends experience the joy of giving, leaving a legacy that provides life changing charitable gifts long into the future. Perhaps you have questions about giving to CRC or creating a will or estate plan or need yours reviewed or are wondering about how to plan for long term care. I will be happy to visit with you in your home, office or church building at your convenience. Our visits will be strictly confidential and absolutely no cost to you. I will be glad to visit with you about the possibility of helping CRC, listen to your needs and desires and see if such planning can be beneficial for both you and also for CRC. What matters to me is doing what’s best for you. I look forward to hearing from you and visiting at your convenience.

Go and make disciples of all nations . . .

Nikisi, Alaska

Paul McFadden, CRC alumnus (‘83) and current Athletic Director and Registrar was able to travel to Alaska for a sixth time with Art Smith, CRC alumnus (‘66) and current VP for Student Affairs, to be able to preach and teach at the congregation at nikiski, alaska as well as visit with church leaders around the Anchorage area. The church in Alaska is small in number and needs much encouragement.

Godley, Texas

Chris Perkins, CRC’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach and his family went to godley, texas with the youth group from Center Hill Church of Christ in Paragould, to conduct a Vacation Bible School and an area wide door knocking campaign to assist the Church of Christ there in Godley.

Foristell, Missouri

Art Smith and Rick Hale joined ten CRC connected students in conducting a Gospel Meeting and Campaign with the Foristell Church of Christ in Foristell, missouri from June 18-22. CRC’s Bible and Ministry Majors preached during the week with Art and Rick wrapping up the meeting on Sunday Morning. The group canvassed door to door and helped by doing requested service projects.

Ten individuals from CRC traveled to Haiti during their Spring Break in March. Five of these mission trip members had been on previous trips to Haiti, and five were newcomers. A devastating earthquake struck the capital city of Port-au-Prince in 2010 killing more than 100,000 people. The country still struggles to recover from that earthquake. The mission trip this spring was the school’s fifth one, and more than 30 students have participated in this effort. The CRC team worked with two orphanages, a church and school with painting, garden work, taking supplies to the very poor and conducting a VBS. The school works with the Hope for Haiti’s Children organization which has operated in Haiti for about 25 years. CRC intends to send another team during their Spring Break in 2017.

Cebu, Philippines

Karen Pillow, CRC alumnus (‘84) and current CRC Administrative Assistant, traveled with a group from Liberty Church of Christ in Paragould to the island of Cebu in the philippines in June. They worked with a local Filipino, Salvador Cariaga, who has been supported by the Liberty congregation for many years. The group was involved in many different works while there from helping conduct services at the local church, teaching classes at the Green Garden Christian School, working with missionaries, Doug and Lisa Simpson (also CRC alumni), at Lilia’s Place, doing a street feeding, going to another island to do a VBS, and going to Arapal to work with the Tree of Life children. It was fast and furious but life-changing. The hardest part was the street feeding with the folks from Lilia’s Place. Seeing the poverty and the people that lived in the cemeteries was heartbreaking, but the people were happy and so very polite. This was Karen’s first mission trip and it definitely made her want to go again.

CrC students, administrators, staff, alumni and Familiesare making a difference all over the world.

Door Knocking in Fisk & Dudley, Missouri & Batesville, Arkansas

CRC Bible majors participated in door knocking and Gospel Meetings during two weekends in September. Blake Murphy (left) is pictured preaching one evening in Fisk and Dudley, missouri. Tyler Killian and Austin Plyley (right) are seen

knocking doors also in Fisk. The following weekend, the group knocked doors in batesville, arkansas inviting people to a Gospel Meeting at Southside Church of Christ in Batesville. We are proud of the way our Bible Majors represent CRC everywhere they go!

Chimala, Tanzania

Four CRC students, Blake Hall, Kelsey Lininger, Dakota Crossno and Anna Wagner spent one month at the Chimala Mission in Chimala, tanzania. They hosted three Vacation Bible Schools (Sun-Wed) at three different locations. They also taught at a Youth Seminar where more than 21 people were baptized. They handed out toys and crayons to the children at the Chimala Mission Hospital, helped a single mother pick corn, handed out World Bible School tracts and pamphlets to adults and gave candy to children in the village.

Dakota and Anna raised money to purchase mosquito nets and handed out many of them and even left money for more to be purchased. We are proud of these students and their willingness to share the love of God around the world.

CrC alumni join together across the world: Charity Andrews, Lesa Osborn, Doug and Lisa Simpson, Karen Pillow and Kisha Clayton.

Crowley’s Ridge College is blessed with a wonderful family of supporters. The next few pages are CRC’s “Honor Roll Listing of Donors” followed by those giving “Memorial & Honor Gifts” for special friends and loved ones. This listing represents gifts from March 1, 2016 - September 29, 2016. We feature an Honor Roll of Donors and Memorial & Honor section in each of our future CRC Insider publications. CRC would not be possible without generous support of those in this listing. Thank you friends for making this wonderful Christian ministry possible and helping us to bless our students each day.
