Personal portfolios can include any type of digital work such as document files, video, audio, images, and links to web sites. Create a Portfolio

The Blackboard e-Portfolio tool can be used for creating learning portfolios, as well as for developing

presentation and personal portfolios. Personal portfolios can include any type of digital work such as

document files, video, audio, images, and links to web sites.

Elements of the Portfolio

Personal portfolios have three basic areas that you can customize:

Header and Footer: can customize in the portfolio style settings

Menu: can customize in portfolio style settings. Can be located on the left or right of the page, or

across the top, under the header.

Content Area: flexible, based on the menu items selected by the user

Understanding the Content

Each page in your portfolio is made from content items called “Artifacts.” Artifacts are building blocks

that you’ll use to construct your portfolio pages. For example, you could have a portfolio page called,

“My Portfolio” that contains Four (4) pages: Home Page, Curriculum Development, Presentations and

Publications page. You will see this completed portfolio sample looks like when My Portfolio is viewed.

Creating a Portfolio

1. Under the Content Collection tab, click Portfolios in the Jump To… section on the left. Expand the

Portfolios section and select My Portfolios.

2. Click the Create Personal Portfolio button.

Properties Tab

In the Properties tab, you will select the method and general information.

3. In section 1 (Select Method), select the radio button beside Create new.

4. In section 2 (General Information), give your portfolio a Title. Enter a description for your portfolio,

if desired.

5. In section 3 (Next Step), Click Save and Continue to proceed to the Style tab.

Style Tab

In the Style tab, you will select the layout theme, design background, font settings, style navigation menu, and next step. 1. Select a Layout (theme) to define the position of content and navigation items.

2. In the Design Background section, select a background color and/or a background image.

3. The Font Settings section allows you to select font properties for the portfolio. By expanding the

Page title and Headings sections, you can select the settings for each.

6. Within the Style Navigation Menu section, choose between text or buttons. Use Template Default,

or Customize Template Menu Font.

7. The Next Step section allows you to mark the Style tab step as complete or in progress. Marking a

step as complete does not prevent future editing.

8. To move to the next step (Build), click Save and Continue.

Build Tab

In the Build tab, you will create pages where artifacts (documents, media, etc.) can be added. You can

also create a header and/or footer for your portfolio’s home page.

1. To add content (artifacts) to the portfolio, click Create Page.

2. In the Page Properties section, enter the title for the page.

3. In the Page Content section, click Create New Artifact.

4. In the General Information section, give your artifact a Name and type in a description of the content or artifact.

5. In the Content section, format the content that you plan to display using the functions on the

formatting toolbar.

6. In the Attach File section, click Browse My Computer or the Browse Course Content Collection to

locate the file that you want to attach to the portfolio page, select the file and then click Open.

7. In Attach Files, File Name section, the file name you selected will be listed under Link Title, Click

Submit

8. In the Page Content section, confirm that your document is listed then click Submit.

The newly created page and attached artifact will display.

Repeat steps 1-7 to add additional pages and artifacts (file, slideshow, media, etc.).

You can return to the Build Tab at any time to add more artifacts.

Adding a Header or Footer within the Build Tab

1. To add a Header, click the Radio Button beside the word Header then click Add.

2. The Portfolio Header section allows users to customize the header of the portfolio. In the rich-text

editor, you can add text, images, links, etc. Once complete, click Submit.

3. To add a footer click the Radio Button beside the word Footer then click Add.

4. The Add Footer section allows users to customize the footer of the portfolio. In the rich-text editor,

you can add text, images, links, and an array of other options. Once complete, click Submit.

Completing the Build Tab

1. The Next Step section allows you to mark the Build step as complete or in progress.

2. Once you have completed adding content in the Build tab, click Save and Continue to proceed to the Settings tab.

Completing the Settings Tab

Complete the Settings tab to finalize your portfolio in preparation for submitting (sharing) it with your

colleagues or your students.

1. In the Settings section, under Portfolio Status, check the box beside Complete to indicate that the

portfolio is ready to be reviewed.

2. To share your portfolios, in the Share Portfolio Settings section, click the boxes beside both

Available and Comments are Private.

3. In the Next Step section, click Mark step as complete radio button and then click Submit.

4. To view the portfolio, click the View Portfolio link on the Edit My Portfolio page.

5. Your portfolio will open in a new browser window or tab. Each page will show as a link in the

navigation panel. When finished viewing, close the window or tab to return to Blackboard Learn.
