Create a Successful MEP Template (The Advanced Essentials)

Shawn C. Zirbes

Don Rasmusson

Class Description

This class is about how to create an efficient Revit MEP template file. There is no right or wrong way to create a template, but from the standpoint of an experienced MEP Production Specialist and an experienced SR Applications Engineer, this is certainly one of the best and most effective for your MEP projects. We will focus on setting BIM Standards so that project documents look the same within a construction document set, and all documents appear to have come from the same place, creating template views for coordination and special views for exporting to Autodesk Navisworks.

Learning Objectives

• Creating Views and Set Up Visibility

• Project Settings

• Define Preloaded Contents

• Create Sheet Standards

INTRODUCTION

Introduction

• What needs to be considered

• Base theory

• Current adoption

• CTC Approach

STARTUP PROJECT MODEL

Startup Project Model

• Project Model File (rfa not rvt) • Worksharing pre-enabled

– All standard worksets defined

• Template links pre-inserted – Origin to origin – On correct workserts – Pinned

• Preparation for visibility graphics control – Especially for links

• Preparation for view template generation

BROWSER ORGANIZATION

Browser Organization

• Decide how many disciplines

– Multi-discipline strategies

– Single discipline strategies

• Establish custom project parameters

• Resolve discipline requirements

• Define sub-disciplines

• Consider types of views that will be required

VIEW RANGES

View Ranges

• Determine discipline requirements

• View types

• Typical view ranges

• Relationship to visibility/graphic controls

• Relationship to view filters

• Relationship to Revit functionality

NAVISWORKS EXPORT VIEWS

Navisworks Export Views

• Define typical project requirements

• Establish export granularity

• Refine visibility/graphic settings

• Create and configure view filters

• Document view boundary establishment

SYSTEMS VS. TYPES

Systems vs. Types

• Systems – Used to group logical

systems

– Effective only for HVAC and Pluming • Electrical only has types

– Derived from the connectors

– Allows for very powerful filtering

– Default graphic overrides

– More

• Types – Settings for analysis

– Used to control Routing preferences

– Can be leveraged with filters • Often less effective than

Systems

FILTERS

Filters

• Most commonly added to views to control visibility

• Offers very specific or coarse object selection/control

• Can use automatic or manually set parameters

• Often established via view templates

VIEW TEMPLATES

View Templates

• Saved settings that can be applied to project views

– Plans

– Sections

– Elevations

– 3D

– Schedules

• Used to control

– Browser sorting

– Visibility Graphics

– Filter effects

– View scale

– Discipline

– Detail level

– Many more…

ROUTING PREFERENCES

Routing Preferences

• Within MEP system type families

• Controls automatic selection of fittings used when routing

• Limit

SCHEDULES

Schedules

• Define typical schedules

• Derive potential schedules

– By project type

• Establish naming conventions

• Create all required schedules

– Common schedules first

– Less common schedules over time as needed
