KAPASSENI VIDEO NIGHTSHosted by Jim Hackler GHC Monday Tenor

Join other choir members to check out these videos.Get some insight about why we have been supporting projects in Mozambique for 16 year.

Learn about how it started in 1999 and what the results were by 2011All that and probably some singing as well!

These showings are for people from Jim’s neighbourhood and any GHC Members who would like to be there

Both showings will be at:

Rosebank Gardens, 1485 Garnet Road Garnet runs parallel to McKenzie on the opposite side of the Nellie McClung Library one block South. Rosebank Gardens is the three story building to the left in the cul-de-sac through the two pillars. (Map)

Journey to Kapasseni, Saturday, May 24, 7:30 PM (re-scheduled date)

In the late 1990s Joseph and Perpetua Alfazema (two Mozambican refugees who were recent Canadian citizens) returned to Africa to visit their home village of Kapasseni. There, they heard a plea from the village chief, who asked for help in rebuilding a school for the village children. Upon returning to their adopted homeland, Joseph and Perpetua Alfazema organized a successful grass-roots fundraising effort to breathe new life into the village.  They allied themselves with the Victoria Gettin’ Higher Choir, which to this day, continues to raise money Kapasseni and other projects.

Joined by several friends, Joseph and Perpetua then went back to Mozambique in the summer of 1999 with a truck laden with supplies for the village. They embarked on a treacherous trip over rough roads and mine-laden countryside.  Among the entourage were Shivon Robinsong, founding director of the

Getting’ Higher Choir and Ben Fox, videographer. With their help the villagers built a school..

Return to Kapasseni, Wednesday, May 28, 7:30 PM

Eleven years later, Shivon Robinsong (founder and co-director of the Getting’ Higher Choir) returns to Kapasseni. Did anything change? Have the funds raised by the Getting’ Higher Choir made a difference?

Following the 20 minute documentary, if enough of us choir members are there we will sing some of our African songs and, after the singing, Shivon will take questions about Kapasseni. There may be coffee, tea, and cookies.

If you are coming to sing, email your name and S A T or B to Shivon [email protected] with a cc: to Jim Hackler at [email protected]. The numbers will influence what we sing.

"Stride To Turn The Tide" GRANDMOTHERS FOR AFRICA SWAT

Benefit for African Grandmothers through the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

This will be our 5th year singing at this event.

Saturday, June 7.

Meet at Centennial Square, by City Hall, (Douglas & Pandora) at 9:40 for warm up. We sing at 10:00.

Repertoire will inlcude NKosi Sikeleli Afrika, Gabi Gabi, Asimbonanga, Shona Malanga, and others.

Choir members who participate in the SWAT are welcome to join the Walk for free.  Please wear your African scarf, if you have one.

COWICHAN BAND SWAT ~ Thursday May 29TH  4:30 - 6:45

I am sorry to say, I have had to cancel our participation in the Cowichan SWAT on May 29.

I had less than a full handful of volunteers, and given the time frame - and the prospect of being caught up in rush hour traffic - I completely understand.

Also, I have realized that with just 3 weeks to go 'til concert time, I can't risk getting back late that night for choir. We think that one of our sister choirs in Duncan can answer Ron George's request for singers for the event.

FLASH MOBSIDNEY DAYS PARADE (Jul 1)

All singers are invited to join in this Canada Day event:

The event will happen at 11:00am on Beacon Avenue at the corner of 5th and Beacon (the Parade will start at 11:30 this year).  There will be a rehearsal at the Mary Winspear Centre between 7 and 8 pm on Wednesday, June 18, with a second rehearsal (if necessary) at the same time the next Tuesday, June 24.  The song being performed is "Happy" (Pharrell Williams’ YouTube version).

The group performing will consist of both singers and dancers but, of course, likely some of the singers will also want to dance, while some of the (primarily) dancers may want to sing as well.  Some simple choreography is being prepared and whomever wishes to do so will be given the chance to learn it at the rehearsal(s).  They emphasize that learning the dance movements is not obligatory.  The music will be live and provided by the band that plays at the Rumrunner - I'm told they are quite good.

The basic "Flash Mob" idea is that the rehearsed group will run through the song (about 4 minutes) and then they will invite everyone around to join in during a second performance.  Of course, if what has happened in the past occurs, many of the crowd assembled for the Parade may start joining in the first time around!

In any case, it sounds like a fun experience with not too much pre-learning or preparation involved.

It's not necessary for people to let me know if they'll be joining in (although that would be nice) - they just need to turn up at the MWC on June 18 at 7:00pm.   Oh - and on the day, they should just wear something red or/and white - t-shirt, long-johns, whatever.

APPRECIATIONSAPPRECIATING KIM

At the UVic SWAT on Tuesday I was, once again, reminded how much I appreciate our When I Sing soloist Kim Willoughby. I don’t hear her singing anywhere near as much as I would like to.

I also appreciate the community and entrepreneurial spirit she demonstrates as owner manager of James Bay Coffee & Books. I recommend that you check out some of the activities there that will find listed in the Community Events section below and/or on her web site. It’s a great spot to read a book over a beverage of choice, visit with a friend, join in a game night or enjoy some excellent music.

WANTED: SUMMER CHOIR SUGGESTIONS

Robert Mungall and I would like to continue attending a daytime (not morning) choir over the summer while High Noon is not in session.  We would hope that the songs would -- like High Noon -- be fairly simple to learn, and have the same kind of semi-spiritual bent to them.   If anyone is aware of such a choir that would welcome summer-only singers, Robert and I would appreciate having contact information about it.

CYCLE OF HOPE FOR ALS 2014

I am honoured to be riding with the Cycle of Hope again in August.  Our aim is to raise $50,000 for ALS - half of it will go to ALS BC for an electric wheelchair - the other half will go to ALS Canada for research.

Our fundraising efforts will include bottle drives during June and July, selling Level Ground Coffee and the awesome Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance for the second year running. This was such an amazing event last year.

Save those bottles!!! I will be asking for coffee orders during choir and can collect bottles on a Monday night.  We start training in March 3 days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So I won't be able to time travel.

If you have any bottles or want to order coffee or are interested in attending the Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance please email me at:

DOG TEAM TO DAWSON

I've written another book, Dog Team to Dawson: A Quest for the Cosmic Bannock and other Yukon stories. I'll bring copies to the choir over the next few weeks. Regular retail price is $19.77. Choir members can buy for $15.00, with $5.00 of that going to the concert Scholarship Fund.

From the book’s cover:

"Dog Team to Dawson is a nostalgic collection of true Yukon stories written by bestselling author Bruce Batchelor. This book is the prequel to Bruce's Nine Dog Winter, providing readers of that classic account with earlier adventures into the heart and soul of the Yukon Territory."

I’m usually at choir on Tuesdays and sometimes on Thursdays and I might make it out for a Monday session.

JUST FOR FUNA reward of laughter for reading this far

OK folks this one I’ve been sitting on for a while, while I sat on the fence about using it. The laughter it causes me, and the fact that it was a lady of sufficient maturity to be presumed to have a reasonable degree of discernment, taste and wisdom, has finally pushed me off the fence. – Bill (that’s my wishy-washy disclaimer and I’m sticking to it).

As I walked down the busy sidewalk with my wife, knowing I was late for Church, my eye fell upon one of those unfortunate, ragged vagabonds that are found in every city these  days. Some people turned to stare. Others quickly looked away as if the sight would somehow contaminate them. Recalling my old pastor, Brother Mike, who always admonished me to "care for the sick, feed the hungry and clothe the naked," I was moved by some powerful inner urge to reach out to this unfortunate person. Wearing what can only be described as rags, carrying her treasured worldly possessions in two plastic bags, my heart was touched by this person's condition.   Yes, where some people saw only rags, I saw a true, hidden beauty. A small voice inside my head called out, "Reach out, reach out and touch this person!"
