BOOK 2: NEVER WALK IN

ANYONES SHADOW.

Zak and Zakiyah Ojo, twins with powers they gained after trying to

save their parents health-juice formula, Z-108, from the jealous

thief, Shadrack Walker, have a lot to learn.

When Zaks juice box leaked from his backpack, and he and his

sister and Shadrack went skittering all over their parents office,

the many chemicals and substances caused a reaction in the

children. Zak was fast. Zakiyah could. Shadrack didnt know it yet,

but his shadow could walk around without him!

A week after the soccer tryouts, where Zak ran too fast to be seen

by the crowd, and Zakiyah saved a friend from a bad fall over the

tennis court fence, the telephone rang. Dr. Sam Ojo, the twins

father, answered.

Yes, I understand. Oh, no, of course. Zak cannot be allowed to

play soccer if he doesnt play fair. I will speak to him about the

other boys injuries.

The children could hear their father on the phone with Zaks soccer

coach. They saw Mr. Ojo rub his forehead the way he did when hehad a headache. Zak and Zakiyah looked at each other. Uh-oh.

Sorry, Zak. Youre on your own! Zakiyah walked away quickly,

before Mr. Ojo could notice her. She knew she and Zak had a lot to

talk about later. Until then, she thought it might be wise to keep

her head low.

Zak. Said Mr. Ojo sternly, as only he could do, Your soccer

coach called. Come with me, son. I need to speak to you.

Oh, boy. Zak knew he was in trouble with his father. Even his Z-

powers couldnt save him from his fathers lecture. He knew he

deserved it, but he didnt like it one bit.

Zak sat down at the kitchen table with his father.

Zak, your soccer coach tells me that you kicked a ball into Oxford

Dames head on purpose last week. The boy has whiplash, and hismother, Aspar Dame, is not happy. Oxford is the star player, and I

know he teased you badly, but that does not mean you are allowed

to hurt him on purpose.

But, father, Oxford Dame doesnt just pick on me! Hes mean to

everyone!

Zak. Your soccer coach said that you didnt even run in the racelast week. He said he saw you kick that ball into the back of

Oxfords head as hard as you could, Now Aspar Dame wants you

off the soccer team, and out of any sport where there is running or

physicality.

(gasp!)

Phys- Physicality?

Physicality means running, jumping, kicking, or contact between

the players. Join the Chess Club, Zak. It will be very helpful to

you, I believe.

Chess? Dad, I hate chess! Its boring!

You will do this, Zak, because I say so. You may not like it now,

but you will thank me one day. Now go finish your chores, and get

ready for bed.

Yes, sir. Zak got up from the table and went to finish his chores

for the evening. He carried out the trash, walked the dog, and

swept the back porch of the family home in Eko. Then he took abath, put on his pajamas, brushed his teeth, and said Good Night to

his parents.

Zakiyah washed the dinner dishes with her Mommy, and swept the

kitchen floor. She cleaned the bathroom, and swept the front stoop.

Then she took a bath, put on her pajamas, brushed her teeth and

said Good Night to her parents, before saying her good night

prayers.

Zak and Zakiyah were up early the next morning. As they walked

to school together, they talked about Zak joining the Chess Club.

Zakiyah almost, almost, felt bad that she left her brother on his

own the previous evening.

Knowing how she felt about chess, she could imagine her brother

would be very, very bored.

They didnt see the girl watching them from the shadows of the

school gymnasium. They didnt know she had seen Zak try out for

soccer every few months for two whole years before last week. She

knew something was up.

Zak Ojo could never have hit Oxford Dame like that by himself!

She decided she would find out what their secret was and let

Madame Aspar Dame know.

Madame Aspar Dame was not the headmistress at school, but she

had donated the land for the gymnasium and the outdoor track and

soccer fields. A good word from Madame Aspar Dame could make

or break your social career!

At home only a few blocks from the office of the doctors Ojo, Zak

and Zakiyahs parents, Aspar Dame put the finishing touches on

the special mind-control icing she put on the cupcakes everyMonday.

She volunteered with the other parents at the school, and she

always brought the cupcakes. Her special icing made it easy to

control everyones minds. It was so much easier to get the things

she wanted by controlling peoples minds than it was to

compromise and work with people.

As long as she controlled minds, she had only to suggest that she

wanted something done, and it was done to her satisfaction.

Madame Aspar Dame smiled as she frosted the last of the super-

sweet cupcakes. She was working on a new formula, which would

enable her to get her cupcakes into every grocery store in Lagos,

and from there, she would control the largest city in Nigeria!

She laughed out loud then, thinking of the empire she would build

for herself and her son, Oxford.

. She planned to buy for him the Super Eagles, Nigerias national

soccer team, when he turned 16. She only had four more years

before Oxford Dame was sixteen. She wanted to have World

Domination in only two more years after that.

She finished the last of the cupcakes and packed them up to take to

school. She wondered if she would have to be polite to Shadrach

Walker, then remembered that he was caught trying to steal from

his employer. She wondered if his niece still attended the school.

She decided she could use him to help her. Every good villain

needed henchmen, after all. She loaded the cupcakes for the

parents meeting into her car and drove to school.

Alone in his dark little room, Shadrack Walker looked around at an

untidy mess. He still had no idea how so many things had come to

be in his room. He had a radio, which he did not have the previous

week.

He had a brand new sofa bed that looked suspiciously like the one

he had seen in the window of the furniture store not long before the

Doctors Ojo had perfected Z-108. He knew that he had not stolen

these things, but he also knew he had not paid for them.

He never noticed his shadow sneaking out the door. He decidedthat he had better set about finding a job of some kind. His niece

needed him to protect her, and he needed to pay for her schooling,

as he had promised her mother.

He grumbled about the Ojos good fortune in perfecting Z-108. He

was angry and frustrated, because until last week, they hardly

seemed to notice him, even though he took care of as many

patients as they did. He wanted some of the glory for himself, buthe wanted it faster and with less work. Shadrack felt he deserved to

have good things come his way, even though he had not earned

them.

School was dismissed for the day, and Shadrack Walker had still

not returned home. Maggie did not know that her uncle had lost his

job. She wondered briefly where he was when she came home, and

then she began to do her homework before she cooked dinner forherself and her uncle.

When it was finished, she placed a cover over her uncles plate,

and ate her dinner, then finished her homework. She wished Shad

rack would come home, so she could tell him about Zak Ojo

having been banned to the Chess Club. It was the talk of Grade

Six!

Zak had had the worst Monday ever. He had forgotten his history

homework at home, been forced to turn in his soccer uniform and

quit the team. Even worse, he had to sign up for Chess Club. He

was a rather unhappy boy.

He and his sister walked to Sam and Patricia Ojos office, like they

did every day after school. They sat in their mothers private office

and did their homework, then played with the other children in the

waiting room, as long as they werent too sick.

When it was time to go home, the Ojo family walked home

together. On Mondays, they often stopped at a caf for dinner. It

was Zaks favorite.

Shadrack Walkers shadow watched them, well, from the shadows.

It could not get the formula for Z108 from Dr. Patricia Ojos bag.

It tried to find the recipe for the formula in Sam Ojos shirt pocket.The shadow even looked in the childrens backpacks. Without the

formula for Z 108, the shadow knew he would have to return to his

master, Shadrack.

It would much rather have been free to visit other shadows.

Shadrack led a very boring life. No one noticed the shadow as it

crept, or saw it speed out the door behind a large man. It knew

what it had to do to be free of Shadrack Walker. The shadow sped

home.

While the Ojo family ate, Zakiyah saw a toddler dart out into the

street, in front of a speeding bus! No! she shouted, and stretched

out her hand, wishing hard that the city bus would suddenly stop so

the child could be saved. Sure enough, that is what happened! The

bus did stop.

It stopped so suddenly that all the passersby stared, and the driver

looked very confused! He hadnt stepped on the brake, but his bus

was stopped in the middle of the street, while a toddler stood

blinking up at him with large, dark eyes, and smiled with his finger

in his mouth.

Zakiyahs shout and outstretched hand startled Mr. and Mrs. Ojo.

They looked on in awe- with everyone else, including their stunned

children- at the huge city bus just feet from the toddler!

His mother ran into the street to retrieve him, darting quickly back

to the sidewalk. Only then did Zakiyah let the bus continue on its

route.

Zak glanced at Zakiyah, and back at their parents. He wondered if

they had noticed what his sister had done. His mothers comment

let him know that they did not.

Sam! Did you see that? That bus stopped as if some invisible

force controlled it!

I did see, Dear. Im not sure how it happened, but that child was

not harmed at all. Of course, they all knew this was completely

against all the laws of science. Only Zakiyah and Zak knew it was

the effects of the Z-108. The little family walked home, parents infront, children following behind them.

While their parents marveled at the sight of what should have been

a terrible accident, Zak and Zakiyah knew they had to discuss their

Z-powers.

What would they do if their parents figured out they had Z-Power

before they were ready to tell?

Would they be in trouble for using their powers?

Would they be allowed to use Z-power to do their chores? How

long would the Z-powers last? Would the effects of the Z-108 wear

off after a few weeks, or would they be special life-long powers?

The Z-Twins did not know yet.

Shadrach Walker returned to his small home with the dark little

room while Maggie was doing her homework.

She jumped up when she heard his key in the lock, and had her

uncles supper on the table for him by the time he made his way

into the kitchen. He sat and ate quietly, pretending to listen to her

tell him about school. He kept thinking about the Z-108, and what

went into it.

He decided that since he had so many new things in his home,

perhaps he could sell them, and get more, and then sell those, so

that he could recreate the formula himself.

He could rule the whole world with a few bottles of Z-108, and

then Dr. Patricia Ojo and her husband, Dr. Sam Ojo, would be

forced to notice his dedication and his intelligence!

Neither the unobservant Shadrack nor Maggie, his niece, noticed

the shadow creep under the door and back behind Shadrack, where

the shadows of people are supposed to stay. Soon enough, Maggie

finished her chores and went to bed.

When Maggie was fast asleep, the shadow wanted its masters

attention. Being a shadow, it was not very loud, so calling to

Shadrack was no good. Then it moved to block the light Shadrack

was using to read.

He grunted and changed positions on the sofa bed. The shadow

began to pull at his blankets, but since it was a shadow, it didnt

move them around much. It sat down right next to its master,

pondering how to get his attention. It slapped at his book three

times.

This did annoy and confound the little man, until he began to look

around the room. At first he thought Maggie must have sneaked a

cat into the house, despite his rule against pets. He looked around

the house, and did not find any animals.

He decided he was just overtired, and was going to go to bed.

When he turned down the blankets, the shadow was lying there, in

the light. It was inky-black against the snowy white sheet.

He yelped, and then clapped his hand over his mouth so he didnt

wake Maggie. The shadow had his attention. Against the bright

white sheet, the shadow pantomimed its plan.

If it could raise a shadow army, then Shadrack could make the

Ojos tell him the formula to the Z-108. Once Shadrack had the

formula, he could set the shadow free. Since it was his shadow,

Shadrack felt he could easily release it. He didnt use his shadow,

and hadnt noticed it missing. He figured no one would notice at

all until it was too late. He agreed.

Within a fortnight, Shadracks shadow had raised a small army of

shadows. While his shadow was raising the shadow army,

Shadrack was making his plans. The Ojos were always so busy that

their routine rarely changed. He could tell what the Doctors would

be doing at any given time, on any given day.

Zak and Zakiyah began to spend more and more time at the local

park, where they could practice using their Z-Power without being

seen. For two weeks, they had gone every day to the park during

times when they were not likely to meet their friends or be

discovered by their parents. They felt they had to examine their

new powers and learn how to use them before they explained them

to their parents.

They were so sore from the extra exertion, and so tired, they

completely forgot that their Uncle, Mr. Goodlove Mwandja, was

coming for an extended stay. He was the twins very favorite Great

Uncle. He always had an Ijapa tale and he was very wise. He

amazed them, because he was Blind, but navigated very well, andcould do everything they could do! He also knew how to keep the

secrets of children.

Uncle Goodlove already had his chair out behind the Ojo family

home when they returned.

FACT: Elders sometimes still tell stories to children by moonlight.

The Elder sits in a chair, and the children sit on the floor or the

ground in a semi-circle around them. This is where children learn

about Ijapa, the cunning tortoise and other wonderful Nigerian

characters and stories that are meant to teach important lessons.

Zak and Zakiyahs mother was not happy when they returned so

late from the park. She was waiting on the front stoop when theyarrived.

Where have you been? Your Uncle Goodlove has been waiting all

afternoon! I should make you stay in your room until morning.

Mother, were sorry. said Zakiyah. We were playing in the park

and lost track of the time.

Patricia Ojo sighed. The children knew they were wrong, but they

did look sorry, and they had apologized. She allowed them to go

outside and greet Uncle Goodlove. She wanted to teach them a

lesson, but she knew that if she were too harsh with them, she

could not expect them to be forgiving of others.

One should not run their race with another persons timepiece.

Amin, Uncle! called Zak and Zakiyah at once.

Uncle Goodlove sat in his chair, as usual, surrounded by children.

He was a kind man, who had been a warrior in his young days.

Zakiyah watched the children from the neighborhood file into the

familys back yard. No matter how many children came, and no

matter where they sat or moved, Uncle Goodlove never stumbled

when he walked around them. She had always wondered how he

did this.

When it was good and dark under the big tree, and the stars had

appeared in the sky, Uncle Goodlove Mwandja began his tale. As

the Monkey danced and farted, and the King of the Jungle ate the

monkey poo, and Ijapa got the respect he was due, the children

smiled and listened politely, laughing at the funny parts. Zakiyah

never got tired of that particular Ijapa story.

When the evening was over, and all the other children had gone

home, Zak and Zakiyah slunk gratefully to bed. They knew they

could talk to Uncle Goodlove after school the next day.

Shadrack Walkers shadow was quickly running out of ways to

coax other shadows away. It desperately wanted to be free of

Shadrack! It had heard Maggie talking excitedly about Mr.

Mwandja being in the neighborhood for a visit. All the children

loved his stories. The shadow heard her tell her uncle that Mr.

Mwandja had been a great warrior.

She thought perhaps the man would have some wise advice for

Shadrack. She still did not know that he would not be made

welcome at the Ojo residence. The shadow knew that if it could

draw the shadow of a great warrior that he could quickly have a

strong army. The quicker there was an army for Shadrack to use to

get what he wanted, the quicker the shadow could be free.

The Z-twins went to school the next morning, and raced home

rather than to the park or their parents office. They really needed

to talk to their Great Uncle! He would know what to do about their

problem. What they came home to was the last thing they

expected!

Zak and Zakiyah entered the house and they could hear the soundsof a struggle coming from Uncle Goodloves room! They raced in

to find him asleep on the bed, moving as if he were having a bad

dream! In the bright sunlight on the wall, two shadows fought!

Zakiyah gasped. How could shadows fight? Zak shouted, which

woke the old man with a start.

Zak! We have to help him! She stretched her hand out to protectUncle Goodlove from the battling shadows, and Zak raced between

them quickly, so that Uncle Goodloves shadow could safely return

to him without anyone getting hurt. Zakiyah moved so the shadow

could return to her Uncles side, and when it did so, they all faced

Shadrack Walkers shadow, but the odd little man was nowhere to

be found!

The shadow dissipated and they watched it creep across the floor,

past everyone, to the door.

The Moon knows its limitations, which is why it doesnt show in

the afternoon.

Amin!

Zakiyah and Zak made sure their uncle was all right, and they all

planned to slip out that night. Zakiyah was sure that she and her

brother knew that shadow.

That night, after the neighborhood children had gone home, Uncle

Goodlove asked Sam and Patricia Ojo if they might want to spend

some time without the children or work concerning them. He

offered to watch the children while the Ojos went out for the

evening. They agreed, and he smiled over his niece Patricias head

at the twins. He winked. Piece of cake!

As soon as Sam and Patricia Ojo were safely out of the house,

Goodlove Mwandja, and Zak and Zakiyah Ojo, (his great nephew

and niece) crept out on their own.

The twins agreed the shadow had looked suspiciously likeShadrack Walker. Goodlove carried his walking staff, and the

twins carried themselves. The trio cut through yards and alleys and

the park where Zak and Zakiyah had practiced using their Z-

powers.

In due time, they came upon Shadrack Walkers house. They

knew he was the Uncle of Maggie Walker, who was in Zakiyahsclass. They didnt like Maggie much more than they did Shadrack,

but it wasnt Maggies fault her uncle was a creep.

Adults were strange, anyway, until they got older. Then when their

children were grown, they became normal again, just a lot smarter.

They stopped outside the Walker home, astonished! Thereappeared to be no light coming from the place. Not only was it

dark, it seemed any light from the street was swallowed up!

Goodlove motioned for them to be quiet. If they stood still, he

would be able to decipher the problem.

He whispered after a moment. My struggle this afternoon was

with the same shadow who is swallowing the light up here.

The sound of his whisper caused the shadows congregating in the

house to take notice. It was night time.

How could anyone know the shadows were there, planning to steal

and getting orders from Shadracks shadow?

If the children wondered how their blind Great Uncle knew what

they were seeing, they did not have time to express it. Several large

shadows separated themselves from the crowd in the yard and

came toward them menacingly. The largest jumped upon Goodlove

and swallowed him from the view of Zak and Zakiyah.

They ran! As quickly as they could, they hid in a neighbors

bushes, so they could figure out how to rescue their uncle. When

the menacing shadows had gone back to the yard, Zak signaled his

sister to create a distraction so he could sneak away, and come up

behind the shadows with a bright light.

He wasnt sure where he would get the light, but he knew it would

beat the shadows. Suddenly, he knew just what to do. No shadow

could survive bright light for long. He needed to make fire!

Zak felt a strange sensation. He really needed his Superzonic Z-

speed now! Zak ran and ran through yards and alleys, gathering

scraps of wood and bits of paper to make a fire.

When he had his materials, he rubbed his hands together so quickly

that the heat created a spark, which quickly grew into a large fire inShadrack Walkers front yard!

Zakiyah was glad when the fire was lit. Its brightness forced the

shadows away from Uncle Goodlove. She caught him before he

fell when the last and largest shadow was dashed away from himby the light from the fire. The shadows were dashed away as if

they were water thrown from a pail.

With the yard now cleared of shadows, Goodlove and the Z-twins

quickly entered the house. Zakiyah flipped on the lights in every

room, except the dark little room where Shadrack slept. The room

was as dark as the yard had been on their arrival.

Zakiyah went to wake Maggie, and told her to run to their house,so she would be safe from the shadows. Maggie listened to

Zakiyah, and did as the other girl said, cutting through back yards

and alleyways.

When Zakiyah returned to the front of the house, Zak was zipping

and nearly flying around the room.

Uncle Goodlove was on the phone with the police.

Stepping quickly now, Zakiyah grabbed the flashlight from the

kitchen, checked to make sure it worked, and returned to Shadrack

Walkers dark little room. She turned on the flashlight and shone it

into the room.

The room suddenly lit up as the shadows were dashed away by the

light. Zakiyah turned on the lamp, but Shadracks shadow refused

to disappear!

It seemed to have somehow gotten free of its master, because

Shadrack was sitting on the sofa bed, and his shadow was standing

in front of him, as if it were having a conversation!

Shadrack was engaged in a conversation-no, an argument- with his

own shadow! It was even scarier than when they had been slipping

and skittering all over the floor of their parents office!

She felt a very strange sensation, and then she just wished. She

wished she could get Shadrack Walker off his sofa bed and out into

the room with them.

She stretched her hand out, wishing, wishing with all her might.

Shadrack was pushed out of the little room and into the front room,

where Uncle Goodlove held him with a strong piece of cord.

Zak raced round and round the shadow. He went faster and faster,

until the shadow was forced to stand still. No matter where it tried

to creep off to, Zak was there, and Zakiyah shone the flashlight.

The police came, and the fire in the front yard was quickly put out

by neighbors. The police took Shadrack away. He was still wanted

for the attempted theft of the Z-108 from Sam and Patricia Ojos

office.

Amid the distraction, Shadracks shadow crept away. It may havebeen a shadow, but it knew exactly when to run.

Goodlove Mwandja and the Z-twins were tired. They knew they

had to hurry home. It was nearly midnight, and Zak and Zakiyahs

parents would be home very soon. They could not risk being

caught.

Zak and Zakiyah each took one of Uncle Goodloves arms andwith Zakiyah wishing and Zak running, they made it home very

quickly.

When the Ojos returned, Maggie had been safely tucked up on the

couch by Uncle Goodlove. The children were fast asleep because

they were very tired. Uncle Goodlove explained that he had needed

to take a short walk, and had taken the children with him.

He told the Drs. Ojo that they had come upon trouble at the Walker

home, and brought Maggie home with them. He told them he had

seen the police lead the little man away, and the neighbors had

been putting out a fire in the yard.

He said Maggie should be allowed to stay with them, at least for

awhile. She was a child, after all, and should not be blamed for her

uncle Shadracks actions. The Ojos agreed.

Uncle Goodlove knew something very special was happening with

Zak and Zakiyah. He knew it was even more special than simply

growing up.

He decided that they would need him to help them learn what to

do. They were smart enough to know when they should run away

and when they should fight. He was very tired himself, and so he

retired for the night.

The next morning, Maggie was gone. The Ojos were worried,

because she had not been found at Shadracks home. Uncle

Goodlove kept silent.

He was sure it was very important that Maggie had disappeared.

He knew nothing had happened to her while she was in their home,

but he also knew that the Shadow was wily and cunning.

Meanwhile, Zak and Zakiyah were out of school for the summer.

That summer would be the most important summer of the Z-

Twins young lives. Uncle Goodlove may have been old and blind,

but he had many things to teach them.

Shadrack Walkers shadow was still free, and the Z-Twins would

have many more battles with him.

Uncle Goodlove Mwandja stood up from his chair in the back

yard, and this was the signal for all of the children to get up from

their places, and play like all children do. He stretched and picked

up his chair, returning it to the kitchen.

He sat down at the table, listening to the sounds of laughing

children through the open back door. He smiled then, enjoying the

sounds of happy children and the chatter of their mothers.

Zak and Zakiyah knew that sometimes the best place to hide

something was right out in the open. The story Uncle Goodlove

told tonight was all true, but who would believe children couldever have the Z-power?

Who believed that a shadow even had its own thought, much less

wanted to be free of its master? No one. They trusted their Uncle

Goodlove. He was even teaching Zakiyah how to navigate with her

eyes closed.

The Ojos would continue to work on the formula of the Z-108.

They wanted healthy children in all of Nigeria, not only Eko. Zak

and Zakiyah would continue to protect it from evil people.

Mr. Goodlove Mwandja, Great Uncle of Zak and Zakiyah Ojo,

would be their ally and their mentor. Knowing how to fight and

run is key for warriors.

A warrior that knows how to fight but not how to run will die in

battle. Great Uncle Goodlove had been a great warrior. He did not

die in battle.

Madame Aspar Dame and her son Oxford would continue to try to

make life hard for the Z-Twins, and Zak and Zakiyah would

continue to treat them like the annoying, arrogant moneys that they
