CREATING A BIBLIOGRAPHY

A bibliography is a list of sources, usually placed at the end of a document, which you used or

cited in creating the document. Based on the source information you used, Word 2010 can

automatically generate a bibliography. Below are directions to create a bibliography for a

picture or article from the Internet or any physical source (book or magazine, for example).

Add a New Citation and Source to a Document for an Internet Picture

When you add a new citation to a document, you also create a new source that will appear in the

Bibliography (Works Cited) page.

1. On the Reference tab, in the Citations & Bibliography group, click the arrow next to Style

and choose MLA Seventh Edition for Radnor Middle School.

2. Click at the end of the sentence or phrase that you want to cite. On the Reference tab, in the

Citations & Bibliography group, click Insert Citation > Add New Source.

Page 2: CREATING A BIBLIOGRAPHY Add a New Citation and ......Creating a Bibliography (Works Cited) 3 a. Click on “View Page” to find where my picture originated. b. Copy the URL (website)

Creating a Bibliography (Works Cited) 2

3. To fill in the source information after clicking Add New Source, click the arrow next to

Type of Source and choose where the information came from (i.e., Book, Journal Article,

Document from a Website, Article in a Periodical, etc.).

4. Fill in the bibliography information for the source. To add more information about a source,

you may need to click the box for Show All Bibliography Fields (bottom left-hand corner).

Click OK when finished.

5. If you are using the Internet and you have a picture or article within a document, use

“Document From Web site” as your source.

6. Let us say I want to use the picture below for a document or PowerPoint. These are the

steps I would take to create the Bibliography.

Page 3: CREATING A BIBLIOGRAPHY Add a New Citation and ......Creating a Bibliography (Works Cited) 3 a. Click on “View Page” to find where my picture originated. b. Copy the URL (website)

c. Add the date you obtained the picture or information under “Year Accessed,”

“Month Accessed,” and “Day Accessed.” The access date information is the date

you retrieved your information, not the date it was created.

d. Scroll up to the top and begin filling in the information for the Author. If it is the

name of a person, put the LAST name of the person and then the FIRST name of the

person, with a comma in between. If it is not a person, then check the box underneath

where it says “Corporate Author.” Place the company name in the box next to

Corporate Author.

e. Below is a sample for the picture used above. The Corporate Author is “New Era

Politics” and the Name of the Article is “Politics v/s Honesty & Truth.” There is no

date given on the page and no other information for me to fill in.

f. Click OK when finished. A placeholder appears with the author’s name in

parenthesis.

g. Highlight and Delete (not backspace) the placeholder name.

h. Click the down arrow next to Bibliography and go all the way to the bottom and

click Insert Bibliography.

references, Word will automatically put them in alphabetical order based on the last

name of the author.

New Era Politics. "POLITICS V/S HONESTY & TRUTH." n.d. 7 January 2014.

another source), and Date (if listed). If it is the name of a person, it is listed LAST name first

and then the FIRST name, with a comma in between. If it is a company/corporation name,

you click “Corporate Author” and place the name in the box next to it.

In the sample below, Chelsea Fagan is the author of the article, but the article is on the

Thought Catalog website. That is why both are listed.

Create a Bibliography

You can create a bibliography at any point after you insert one or more sources in a document. If

you do not have all of the information that you need about a source to create a complete citation,

you can use a placeholder citation and then complete the source information later. However,

placeholder citations do not appear in the bibliography.

1. Bibliographies should be on a page by itself (usually at the end of the document). To do

this, you can insert a page break in one of three ways:

a. Go to Page Layout tab, Page Setup group, Breaks, Page.

b. Go to Insert tab, Pages group, Page Break

Page 19: CREATING A BIBLIOGRAPHY Add a New Citation and ......Creating a Bibliography (Works Cited) 3 a. Click on “View Page” to find where my picture originated. b. Copy the URL (website)
