Creating a Quiz
Workflow
1. Get the questions ready to be imported by formatting according to the GIFT format. (See “GIFT
Format for Moodle” instructions) (p. 1)
2. Create a category that has the same name as the quiz (p. 2)
3. Import the questions into the Question Bank category (p. 3)
4. Create the quiz activity on the main course page (p. 6)
5. Edit the Quiz (add the questions from the Question Bank to the Quiz activity) (p. 8)
6. Add a Picture to a Question in the Question Bank (p. 12)
Step 1: Convert or write your test in the GIFT format
See “GIFT Format for Moodle” help sheet.

Step 1: On the main course page, in the Administration
Block, select the link “Question bank”
Step 2: Select the Categories tab at the top of the screen
Step 3: Select the button “Add category”
Scroll to the bottom part of the page, and verify the course name is in the “Parent” category box. If it
isn’t, select it from the drop down list (select the arrows at the right side of the box)
Add the name of the quiz in the “Name” box. Naming the category the same as the quiz will allow
you to keep track of the questions (this becomes increasingly important as more quizzes are added
to the Question bank)
2. Creating a Category to Hold the Questions

Step 4: Finally select the button “Import”
Step 3: Select the File format being imported (GIFT in this example), then drag and drop the plain text file
into the drag and drop box.
If you have not made any errors in the text file, you will see a green verification box. If there is a prob-lem with your text file (a missing curly brace, for example), there will be a red notification box. Make a note of which question has the error, fix the error in the text file, and then try to re-import the quiz again.

5. Add questions from the Bank to the Quiz (Linking questions in the Question Bank to the Quiz Activity)
Quiz Design Quizzes can be designed to function in several different ways. The method chosen depends on
whether the quiz is formative (that is, used to help students identify what they know and what they
don’t), or summative (used to assign a grade as a measurement of learning). To get an idea of the
available options, take one line from each section (A, B, and C).
Section A
1. All the questions are presented to students in the same order (sequential)
2. Questions appear in a random order for every student (random)
Section B
1. Students don’t see the correct answer, ever.
2. Students only see the correct answer after completing and submitting the quiz.
3. Students can see the correct answer after each question.
Section C
1. The quiz is not worth any marks.
2. The quiz is worth marks.
Some of these settings are configures in the Quiz Activity settings, and some are configured when
adding the questions to the quiz.

Step 1: Select the quiz activity on the main course page. In this example the quiz is called “Sample Quiz”
Step 2: In the Administration Block, under Quiz Administration, select the link “Edit quiz”
Step 3: For this quiz, I want to use all the questions in the Question Bank, and I want the questions to be
presented to the students in a random order. Select the link “Add”, and then select “+ a random question”

Step 4: Select the category from the Category drop down (if you have followed the recommendations, it
will be named the same as the quiz)
Step 5: Select the “Number of random questions” that you want the Quiz activity to use from the selected
questions bank by selecting that number in the drop down list. (You could have a questions bank with 1000
questions, and then select 100 of those questions at random. Each student would get a different set of ques-
tions). In this example I want to use all 4 questions in the category.
Then select the button “Add random question” at the bottom of the list of questions.

Step 6: Change the “Maximum grade” to reflect your marking schema. Usually the Maximum grade matches
the “Total of marks”, unless you have designed questions that offer part marks. (Beyond the scope of this
help sheet).
Step 7: Select the button “Save”. The quiz is now ready for students.

Recommended Workflow
1. Create a specific folder for the test (that has the same name as the test) on your computer.
2. Save the version of the test that includes all the pictures in this folder, labelled “Original”
3. Create a word document that ONLY contains the text from the test, and edit the document to
be imported into Moodle (the GIFT format is recommended). During this step, each question is
named (Q_01, Q_02, etc.)
4. Save the .doc file.
5. Save the .doc document as a plain text file (.txt), using Other encoding: “Unicode (UTF-8)”
6. Within the same folder, create another folder named “Pictures”.
7. Save each picture individually (.jpeg or .gif or .png file types only), using the question number
where the picture belongs as the file name. For example, question number 5 refers to a dia-
gram. Save that diagram using the file name “Q_05”.
8. Create a category in Moodle with the same name as the test.
9. Import the .txt file into the category bearing the test name.
10. Each picture has to be individually placed into the appropriate question number - which will be
easy because each picture is numbered according to question number to which it belongs (if you
have followed these recommendations)
6. Quiz Activity with Pictures
