Nuts and Bolts• Ensure information in CV and service portfolio are the same by
copying the info from CV to portfolio and then adding detail
• Use SOM format!
• Delete unused sections prior to submission- this should be a live
document
• This is your opportunity to explain unique or exceptional roles
• 10 page limit
Creating a Service
Portfolio
Why a standard format?• The published formats include the vast majority of categories for
faculty across the diverse SOM
• Format acts as a guide to activities that support the case for your
promotion
• Provides a frame work for recreating your professional life in a
succinct document
• Reviewers can more effectively review packets when all are
created in the same manner

Teaching or Service?
• Program Directors do both- administrative functions are
service, mentoring and lectures are teaching
• Thesis committees are mentored/teaching, not service
• Moderating a panel is service, giving a lecture is teaching.
However, a lecture related to your research can be considered
scholarship!
Creating a Service

You can be your own worst
enemy or you own best friend!
• What aspects of your work deserve special recognition?
• Don’t assume others will know
• Is the Fellow designation for your society based on paying a fee, are there minimum requirements, or is it highly competitive and by invitation only?
• Ensure that your CV, service and teaching portfolios have all the same dates, titles and basic information. Portfolios should expand on your CV, not add new material.
