CREATING A SHORT VIDEO: FILMING

Films are made up of different scenes. Scenes are made up of shots. By filming a scene, you will want to take lots of shots and then edit them together to create your scene. There are lots of ways that you could capture your story.

Here are a few basic shots and filming techniques to get you started.

Wide shot The wide shot really shows the viewer the whole picture. It’s a great way to establish a scene or show the environment around your subject.

Here's a video example: http://vimeo.com/36453162

Mid shot

The mid shot allows you to focus in on a person, while still

leaving some context. There is less in the screen than the wide

shot, but enough to see what’s around your subject.

Here's a video example: http://vimeo.com/36452618

Close upThe close up allows you to really show a detail in your story. This could be someone’s face, but you’ll also want to use it to show small details - lacing up shoes, clipping on a helmet, letting go of the lawn bowl. Think close!

Here's a video example: http://vimeo.com/36452617

PanningPanning is the horizontal movement of the camera from a fixed point. Pans are a great way to show a landscape, scene or reveal a character in your story.

Along with these shots, you can also include camera movement.

TiltingTilting is the vertical movement of the camera from a fixed point. Tilts are a great way to move from the foreground to background or vice versa.

ZoomingZooming in draws the attention to a detail in the shot. Zooming out reveals the bigger picture and context of your shot. If your camera has a digital zoom, turn it off. The results are usually pretty ordinary and you’ll get a better result by moving the camera to create your zoom.

Extra Tips

TRIPOD: By using a tripod your pans, tilts and zooms will look a lot better. It can be hard to get a stable shot without a tripod. If you don’t have one, try resting your camera on a level surface or against a wall.

LOOK DIFFERENT: Experiment with your shots. Shoot from different angles, try different pans and tilts, and work out what you like. Everyone sees the world differently - this is your chance to show how you see it.

Now, watch the whole story to see how each of these shots fit together:
